Concerns about racism

1000 replies

PandoraSocks · 05/08/2025 08:33

Hi there Mumsnet HQ

Many of us are concerned about the uptick of hatred, xenophobia and racism on the site over the past couple of weeks. Most of the bigotry is focused on asylum seekers. MNHQ will of course delete racism etc. if reported, but this has gone way beyond a few hateful posts.

Links below to three examples of threads which have descended into real nastiness.

Cheers.

Maybe look into why calling it "the Irish potatoe (sic) famine" is, apart from being offensive to many Irish people, historically inaccurate.

Lots of historical events have fairly inaccurate colloquial names. You’re looking for offence so you can band together and support your comrades on here.

anyolddinosaur · 06/08/2025 12:16

The Famine was terrible - and more people should be aware of just how bad it was. It affected Scotland as well as Ireland and many people will have ancestors who fled from it. But there is a difference between mocking the famine and mocking being concerned about the words used to describe it.

They are free to call it what ever they want, I can cope with it …just about. Pathetic.

They may object to it, they don’t have the right to police using its correct name because they’ve decided they are offended. Seriously, grow up.

It isn't "the correct name" though - as even MNHQ recognised in their response.

Neither is the ‘Spanish flu’. Are you equally as offended about that?

I was under the impression that the situation was worst in Ireland because of the behaviour of the English ?

And Scottish/Welsh, yes.

childofthe607080s · 06/08/2025 12:25

In general I do think there is a need to be careful , forgiving and tolerant especially of words , to avoid taking offence if none was intended unless the words can be easily shown to lead to negative and harmful stereotyping by the less well informed

speaking for myself - o know some turns of phrase can really upset me for historic reasons even when the person had no such meaning and so I would try to overlook the insensitive words

But if someone explains to you (not you personally, you in the general sense!) why a particular phrase may be offensive, taking that on board is the decent thing to do.

Times change and language evolves.

On the spectrum of what?

On the spectrum of what?

This kind of “ and now I’ll trap you with my feigned incomprehension” is nauseating.

To all those suggesting it is not left v right - racism is not but the desire to shut down debate is coming from the left. There is very much a "anyone who disagrees with me is a bigot" mentality on this thread and anyone who has followed the recent employment tribunal in Scotland has seen that quickly becomes this person is no longer entitled to fair process and we will remove their rights.

Part of the attempt to shut down debate is the refusal to provide information. Lets not collect accurate information on crimes and who commits them so we can deny there is a problem. The idea that we should then adjust crime statistics for things like age and income is ludicrous. If we are going to import young men from misogynist countries and fail to make any attempt to educate them then crimes against women are likely to increase. Trying to state it doesnt matter because men from less misogynist countries also commit crimes belittles legitimate concern and fuels racism.

Racism is fuelled by lack of debate, failure to respond to legitimate concerns and especially by those with privilege refusing to acknowledge the concerns of those that lack that privilege. I'm sure many people here would happily acknowledge the privilege of being white skinned while totally ignoring the privilege of being male or of having money.

Where do you see the "anyone who disagrees with me is a bigot" mentality from posters on this thread who want to raise concerns about racism on the platform?

I get that we have no right to be protected from being offended and that’s a good thing. But there is nuance, if I were running all over the boards using words like retard, cretin or Mongol then I’d be careering towards a banishment. There’s saying the things that can offend people and there is (what I’m about to write next is chosen deliberately with dark and sarcastic intent) going beyond The Pale.

The problem with ‘using the right language’ is everyone disagrees on what it is, even those it affects or involves. Case in point - do you say an autistic person or a person with autism? I’ve heard both be deemed the correct term by autistic people.

Yes I agree with that and there will be genuine misunderstandings.

Right. I thought that was what you meant, but was not certain. Thanks for clarifying.

The relevance to the conversation, I don't understand.

@childofthe607080s The landowners - often, but not exclusively English - were definitely a problem. Food was still being exported to England during the Famine! Peel tried to repeal the corn laws, his (Conservative) Party would not stand for it so he resigned. The government of the time were a disgrace.

@ilovesooty look at the attitude to the feminism section and the idea that there should be a separate section again. Very clear what the attitude of some posters is.

Inchworms · 06/08/2025 12:49

It’s interesting that a bunch of names I recognise have turned up here to do exactly what a small group of posters are saying they don’t like. Didn’t realise this board was so popular. Maybe the thread’s in trending

What attitude would that be?
