I’m getting really fed up of my posts being deleted.

WellingtonBootilicious · 22/05/2025 21:15

I say nothing inflammatory. No rascism, no sexism, no xenophobia. Because that is not me, I would never.

So why are my posts being deleted? I’m adding to the discussion. Sometimes I may question if a pp is being deliberately stupid… is that a legitimate reason to be deleted?

How thin skinned are we supposed to be to use this website? It’s becoming pointless even bothering to make a post.

I made a genuine post about about how knife crime is a serious problem within major cities. Low & behold, it’s been deleted. I made some genuine points in the post, ones that could lead to a positive discussion. I’m starting to give up on MN, no other website is policed to this extent.

I agree that hate crimes should be deleted. Of course. But I have done nothing of the sort.

Listen, I totally understand the way I speak doesn’t correlate well to the way I write. I get that, I really do.
I’m never out to offend, I’m not out to insult people.
I’m really not a nasty person.
I made this post because I was frustrated by the fact my posts on a particular thread were being deleted because I felt I made some good points beneath the insinuated ‘insults’.

I didn’t come here to be berated for the way I speak.

Maybe MN isn’t for me.

Right. Fair enough, I accept the turn of phrase can be insulting. And I apologise for that, I really do.
It’s something that is said flippantly within my family but I appreciate it doesn’t come across well written down.

But does that really warrant the entire post to be deleted? I raised some important points I feel. I was never intending to cause offence. If I had been racist, sexist or xenophobic, then I’d understand. But surely as adults we don’t find the word stupid so offensive?

OP since you are genuinely trying to understand flippancy is rude.

Being flippant is rude.

Tarantella6 · 22/05/2025 22:23

You don't have to address anyone personally at all, you could just make your interesting points.

Adding are you stupid / hard of thinking / wow you must be a delight to be around isn't really bringing anything to the party.

Snugglemonkey · 22/05/2025 22:23

WellingtonBootilicious · 22/05/2025 21:28

Really?!

I honestly don’t know why my posts are being deleted?
Asking someone ‘are you stupid’ is a deliberate turn of phrase where I’m from.

It’s annoying if I’m being deleted for that one sentence. I’m often adding, what I think, to be a legitimate part of the argument.
I’m never deliberately insulting or personal.

Asking someone that where I am from is very aggressive and wanting a fight. It is a horrible way to speak to anyone!

Snugglemonkey · 22/05/2025 22:25

WellingtonBootilicious · 22/05/2025 21:47

Irish but living in the uk. It’s something we throw around when we disagree with each other.

I honestly thought the British were more thicker skinned.

I am Irish, living in the UK. I think it is a disgusting thing to say to anyone.

CarpetKnees · 22/05/2025 22:25

If you are getting so many posts deleted, you need to look a the common denominator.

I've been on here for 20 years+ and think I've only ever had one post deleted, and, when I looked back, I could see why it could have been interpreted in a way that upset people so I accepted it.

Do you go round in your day to day life telling colleagues, and people you meet in the service industry, retail and shops, medical appointments etc, they are stupid ? Or generally insulting them in other ways ?

GrannyAchingsShepherdsHut · 22/05/2025 22:26

I don't understand why you keep saying it doesn't come across the same written as spoken - it's rude either way!

You're talking to strangers, you don't just call randoms stupid and expect them to be ok with it!

Other mumsnetters don't come here to be called stupid, I expect they were quite upset by that too!

WearyAuldWumman · 22/05/2025 22:27

WellingtonBootilicious · 22/05/2025 22:05

But is the word stupid so insulting? That’s what I’m struggling to grasp. It’s just a descriptive word for someone who isn’t getting what I mean?

I'm fairly ancient - 65. When I was a child, calling someone 'stupid' was deemed to be unforgivably rude.

I believe that youngsters round my way are still told that it's rude.

It was 2 posts on one thread.

TBF I’ve seen worse things on here than “are you stupid”. It’s not a phrase I would use, but I’m surprised people bother reporting - if the OP had called someone a cunt I’d have understood the issue.

If you’d said, ‘oh, really?! Is that what’s getting deleted?! Bloody hell that’s a shocker!’, no one would be berating you.

People ares still here because you don’t seem to believe the issue. You can’t argue the rules or a site. You just get to decide whether to stay or not.

Personally I hope you stay. It’s a good place, loads to learn and interesting perspectives. But being argumentative is unwelcome.

Except on AIBU! Go on there and do a poll, AIBU to think ‘are you stupid’ is a perfectly friendly phrase to lob into a disagreement?!

You’ll like it there. It’s robust.

Ask yourself if you would speak to anyone in real life like this. Your family speak to each other like this according to you, but would you say it to a stranger you had just met? Or even a friend? It’s rude and derogatory.

myplace · 22/05/2025 22:30

This is starting to remind me of that comedy sketch where the guy pays for an argument. 🤣

I saw your post's and felt they were genuine and definitely added to the discussion.

This wide eyed innocent act is hilarious. Trying to make out it's some sort of harmless regional expression lol.

I had a quick look at your posting history and you are pretty abrasive. Why not own it?

Live by the sword, die by the sword I say. If you have a gloves off approach to posting you can't complain about a gloves off approach to moderation

Bestfootforward11 · 22/05/2025 22:32

I don’t think I’ve ever had a discussion on something with someone where someone has said ‘Are you stupid?’ in response to a point made. Can’t really see how that advances anyone’s argument. Is there the expectation that the person will reply ‘Yes, I am. Thank you for pointing it out’. You may well have good points to make but you undermine yourself by making comments re someone being stupid if you take a different view to them. Just make your point, no need to comment personally in that way.

WhatANightForADance · 22/05/2025 22:33

If you can’t change the way you communicate to fit talk guidelines, then mumsnet will make that decision for you.

ByZanyRubyOrca · 22/05/2025 22:33

Well calling them stupid is rude so probably comes under no personal attacks. These are guidelines OP to familiarise in future

Wow. Are you still arguing that you are right/have mitigating reasons rather than accepting you were wrong and were actually insulting?

It might be time for some quiet reflection OP.

AlohaRose · 22/05/2025 22:35

Sorry, but I'm also Irish, living in the UK and other countries for decades, and calling someone stupid is incredibly rude. Which part of Ireland are YOU from a OP because it is certainly not acceptable on the East coast where I'm from!

Bestfootforward11 · 22/05/2025 22:36

Yes. That would be a healthy way to discuss rather than call people names.

Yup. I fell foul of the troll hunting proscription when I was a newbie because I wrote "Found the [t-word]!"
