UPDATE FROM MNHQ - new Hidden Gratitude feature

YetAnotherBeckyMumsnet · 04/09/2023 10:31

Today we’re launching a new feature called Hidden Gratitude. We’ve had many requests over the years for a like button on Mumsnet but shared concerns that some have expressed about it being a bit reductive and possibly turning discussions into a popularity contest.

Nonetheless, we think it would be nice to be able to thank posters for a particularly helpful or generous post. Hidden Gratitude is an easy way to show appreciation but as the name suggests, there will be no publicly visible 'like' count, only the user who has been given thanks can see it.

All you need to do is hit the “thanks” icon on the post you want to appreciate. The poster will receive a notification which will let them know who has “thanked” them. That’s it!

And, before you ask - at the time of writing we have no plans to introduce a hidden ingratitude button…

Can we have a "fuck off" button please ?

WildFlowerBees · 04/09/2023 10:41

Not for the app though?

Nochoiceleft · 04/09/2023 10:42

How is the notification received?

lljkk · 04/09/2023 10:42

Cool idea. Thanks.

AuntieStella · 04/09/2023 10:45

Why?

Did you canvas users for this?

(Remembers that when you last canvassed opinion on a 'like' button, it was a resounding "no")

I really don't see the point in this. If a poster wants to that another, what's wrong with posting their appreciation, or even quote+"ta" or in some circs Flowers

SoCentralRain · 04/09/2023 10:45

Can you switch the bookmark button back to where it was please, I keep pressing ‘report’ by mistake now.

SoCentralRain · 04/09/2023 10:46

WildFlowerBees · 04/09/2023 10:41

The app never gets anything!!

How is the notification received?

Good question. If it's emails that could get irritating really fast.

Chamomileteaplease · 04/09/2023 10:48

Yes please don't send lots of emails!

michalwave · 04/09/2023 10:48

Nochoiceleft · 04/09/2023 10:42

How is the notification received?

I'd liek to know too!

Can a kind soul give me thanks for this post so I can see?

I will report back :D

YetAnotherBeckyMumsnet · 04/09/2023 10:49

@MyColdDeadHeart that one might fall under hidden ingratitude...

@Nochoiceleft you'll see a thanks count on your post and you can see who thanked you in your notifications. (You can manage your notifications in your Talk settings).

@WildFlowerBees we're currently rebuilding our mobile Talk app so users can access features that are available on our website. We know it’s frustrating for app users at the moment - the rebuild will be a huge improvement but it's a big job and is taking time. Please bear with us!

Pretty sure that's the same as a hidden ingratitude button!

Some people seem to be getting it in their notifications but I haven’t.

michalwave · 04/09/2023 10:50

Thanks for the Thanks, all, I can see them.

Love this feature @YetAnotherBeckyMumsnet !

Sometimes you can feel a bit of a lone voice on a thread.

Nochoiceleft · 04/09/2023 10:51

I now have a notification for the thanks in this thread but not in another thread that I have thanks on. Seems a bit random.

Plasmodesmata · 04/09/2023 10:51

Hmm, I went to look at notifications. I get this list of options - has it not been updated for this feature yet?

I prefer it the way it's been. Imagine, you pour your heart out and don't get a single 'gratitude'.

It's better just hoping people have read and appreciated, rather than get 'evidence' no one cares. Or maybe they did care, but are on mobile without access to the feature.

People who are very appreciative just post and say 'that meant a lot'.

Yes please :)

JanesBlond · 04/09/2023 10:59

I assume that in the notification you see the username that the person was currently using when they gave the thanks? Can they thank more than once by changing name?

I think that would on;y be true if you could see other people getting gratitude.

Hello @Plasmodesmata it looks like you're on email notification settings rather than web settings. Please take a look here.

I think that would on;y be true if you could see other people getting gratitude.

But I'm literally telling you how I would feel.

It would be disheartening to share deeply emotive things to support people on here, then be met with crickets.

MonumentalLentil · 04/09/2023 11:05

I was happy without this.
However there are a lot of things on here I can live without.

Can I turn it off? Plus any associated e.mails as every time something gets changed on here I start getting them. I have been unable to stop getting them for reported threads which is a pain so now have to hide my e.mail address from sight and not use it for anything else. Invasion of rights is not being considered on this site.

Once you click on the notification it's removed from the list - perhaps this happened here but let us know if it happens again. In any case, you can see who thanked you by clicking on the Thanks icon.
