UPDATE FROM MNHQ - new edit feature

YetAnotherBeckyMumsnet · 23/08/2023 09:28

We’re pleased to announce that we’re introducing an edit feature.

Historically, we’ve been hesitant to introduce edits because of concerns that historical revisions could cause confusion.

We’re mitigating this by implementing both a time limit (you’ll have a short period of time to edit your post) and ensuring the edit history will be visible to all. The edit feature is designed for minor corrections, such as fixing spelling mistakes and grammar errors that don't change the context of your post. It should not be used to change the overall meaning or intention of your original message. We’re adding a new report option so you can let us know if you think anyone is abusing the feature.

To edit your post:
Select the ‘...’ menu on the post you want to edit
Select ‘Edit’
Fix any mistakes
Select ‘Update’ to save your changes

To see the edit history of a post:
Select the ‘Edited’ label on the post

As some of you may know, we’re currently working on rebuilding our mobile Talk app so app users can access features that are available on our website. Whilst this work is underway, users won’t be able to edit their posts in the app, but they will be able to see when a post has been edited and view the edit history. iOS users will need to make sure they’ve updated to the latest version. The update for Android will be coming imminently and we’ll let you know when it’s available.

We know it’s frustrating for app users at the moment - the rebuild will be a huge improvement but it’s a huge job and is taking time. We really appreciate your patience.

We hope you find the edit button useful - we’ve added edit guidance to our Talk Guidelines, but if you’ve any questions or problems, please add to the thread.

Thanks, MNHQ

Just here to practice

HyggeTygge · 23/08/2023 18:15

Oooh, late to this but this could be great! Or could it?

Edited to add: yes, it could!

pizzaHeart · 23/08/2023 18:57

Just enjoyed the opportunity to correct a really silly mistake.
Love new feature!

FutureThroughLensOfThePast · 23/08/2023 19:02

Testing testing

Seems to work!

FutureThroughLensOfThePast · 23/08/2023 19:03

I hope people don't feel compelled to edit typos that are unintentionally hilarious!

Topseyt123 · 23/08/2023 19:06

Excellent!

Weeeee heeeee!

And ....... it works. 😃

JaneJeffer · 23/08/2023 21:19

So you can see the original unedited post on the mobile site but not on the app

Furries · 23/08/2023 21:33

This is great because my iPad likes to make shit up

Catsmere · 23/08/2023 22:47

At last, yay!

WantingToEducate · 24/08/2023 07:52

I just tested and it worked!!! Yay!!!

Catsmere · 24/08/2023 08:03

Let's see if it'll work on this iPad - it wouldn't this morning.

YES!

KickingEAP · 24/08/2023 09:42

I just spotted this on another post.

It appears to work

FadeAwayAndRadiate · 24/08/2023 13:43

Brilliant. Thanks @YetAnotherBeckyMumsnet That's amazing !!!

MN has always lacked that feature and it's always been a bit of a ball-ache! Grin This is massively appreciated!!!

How much time do we have to edit any given post???

JaneJeffer · 24/08/2023 13:47

JaneJeffer · 23/08/2023 21:19

So you can see the original unedited post on the mobile site but not on the app

I can see it now

monpetitlapin · 24/08/2023 20:05

Mine still doesn't seem to have an edit button. Desktop. Mac.

Oh bloody typical, now it does. 🤣

Haffiana · 24/08/2023 21:15

You can indeed completely change your post though....

ChristmasKraken · 24/08/2023 21:32

Edited

And you can be reported for an inappropriate edit if you do that and change the context.

Yeah, I'm guessing like ... if there was some kind of debate going on, and you said one thing in your post - and someone posted a minute after to argue against it - and then you went back and completely changed what you'd said and just said 'hmm..,' or deleted the comment and just left a dot, I would imagine that would be contravening the rules of the edits.

I think this edit function is specifically just to fix typos - or if you missed a word out. Like, if you said thank you very much for that.' And you missed the word 'for' out, you could change it... So if you typed 'thank you very much that.' And you changed it to 'thank you very much for that,' this would be OK.

Drews · 24/08/2023 22:22

The edit feature is good n all but the 'edited' mark under comment takes up quite a bit of real estate on the page. why people can't just proofread before hitting send I'll never know

I have checked and checked and checked again and again, any given post I am composing@Drews, and despite all my best efforts, there is sometimes a bloody typo in it - especially if it's a longer post! No-one is perfect and small errors and typos are made quite often! So 'proof-reading' does not always pick every single thing up... It's easy to miss small errors, and spot it after you've clicked 'post!'

Also if you're involved in a fast moving conversation it's easy to make mistakes/typos. You made 2 yourself in this post I quoted! ^ Lower case 'w' at the beginning of the sentence you put strike-though on, (instead of upper case,) and no full stop at the end!

As I said, no-one's perfect, and everyone makes mistakes. Even you........ Wink

This edit function has been a long time coming, and it's VERY WELCOME!!!

Drews · 24/08/2023 23:02

@FadeAwayAndRadiate yes I'm sure pointing out put that incorrect capital letter gave you great glee. I still stand by my sentiments that a quick glance to check the message can be clearly understood is a better practice than thumb smashing the keyboard and hit post kind of fashion. Now we have this big 'edited' button under every post taking up space on the screen instead of a small neat notification somewhere on the post.

Catsmere · 24/08/2023 23:10

Surely the “Edited” button takes less space than a whole extra post correcting things? Don’t correction posts fill up the thread faster?

manybirdsnests · 24/08/2023 23:21

I want to practice with this feature 😀

Jux · 24/08/2023 23:25

It can be easyomisstypos, especially if you're trying to poston a faster moving thread. See! I thought I'd typed that sentence perfectly well, but I (or my magic keyboard) missed those spaces and a t; I saw the flashy flashy things as I typed but I was looking at the keyboard rather than the post. This isn't a very fast moving thread so I could correct them, but it's a better illustration if I don't.

One of the commonest reasons I'd sometimes like an edit is if MN markup goes awry, this can't be seen until I've posted (the app has no preview). Maybe the underlying bug should be fixed but at the moment there are lots of threads with accidental strikeout (often where someone has c&pd a chunk of text that uses paired hyphens as punctuation - or bolding on HE threads discussing A level grades.
I've not got my glasses on so Muphry's law may strike me Grin
