UPDATE FROM MNHQ - new edit feature

YetAnotherBeckyMumsnet · 23/08/2023 09:28

We’re pleased to announce that we’re introducing an edit feature.

Historically, we’ve been hesitant to introduce edits because of concerns that historical revisions could cause confusion.

We’re mitigating this by implementing both a time limit (you’ll have a short period of time to edit your post) and ensuring the edit history will be visible to all. The edit feature is designed for minor corrections, such as fixing spelling mistakes and grammar errors that don't change the context of your post. It should not be used to change the overall meaning or intention of your original message. We’re adding a new report option so you can let us know if you think anyone is abusing the feature.

To edit your post:
Select the ‘...’ menu on the post you want to edit
Select ‘Edit’
Fix any mistakes
Select ‘Update’ to save your changes

To see the edit history of a post:
Select the ‘Edited’ label on the post

As some of you may know, we’re currently working on rebuilding our mobile Talk app so app users can access features that are available on our website. Whilst this work is underway, users won’t be able to edit their posts in the app, but they will be able to see when a post has been edited and view the edit history. iOS users will need to make sure they’ve updated to the latest version. The update for Android will be coming imminently and we’ll let you know when it’s available.

We know it’s frustrating for app users at the moment - the rebuild will be a huge improvement but it’s a huge job and is taking time. We really appreciate your patience.

We hope you find the edit button useful - we’ve added edit guidance to our Talk Guidelines, but if you’ve any questions or problems, please add to the thread.

Thanks, MNHQ

Great news

Now, about that 'like' button...Grin

MillicentTrilbyHiggins · 23/08/2023 10:16

Ooooo
Interesting
Although I never notice mistakes until about an hour later
How many times can we edit?

I'm bored now

Good. Recently I've noticed people writing some sentences that are absolute gobbledegook. As if auto correct has changed most of the words into completely different words. Hopefully people will be able to recorrect them so they make sense.

Yes, this! I struggle to make sense of posts sometimes and think it must be my confusion with new fangled words or something!

rileynexttime · 23/08/2023 10:21

WOW, at last.

Whinge · 23/08/2023 10:26

It's about bloody time! 😀

And thank goodness you changed your mind on making it a premium only feature. Such a basic feature should have been implemented years ago, but it's better late than never.

Yes yes yes this one next please. I’ll take a dislike button while I’m at it.

And @CallieJones you do have to remember that some of us just talk nonsense that even an edit button can’t help.

DebbieLouiseDairyleaCheese · 23/08/2023 10:29

Oooh brilliant!

it works, corrected my grammar mistake! 🍾

YourNameGoesHere · 23/08/2023 10:29

Holy fuck I never thought I'd see the day! Thank you!!!

frozencarlotta · 23/08/2023 10:32

ooh nice - I like you can see the history of the edit too, and its VERY clear that it was edited

what happens with a quoted post that is edited?

hello - this is my edit

DebbieLouiseDairyleaCheese · 23/08/2023 10:32

Thanks mumsnet!

Oh yes, I really want a like button and actually going by the many horrible posts lately a thumbs down too, might put people off being nasty when they see how many people don't actually like having to read their bile. And sure look while I'm here, a big emoji that says RTFT, A HUGE ONE !

ScienceDadOliver · 23/08/2023 10:32

This is a much-needed addition! Kudos for considering user feedback and implementing time limits and edit history. Looking forward to smoother interactions and updates on the Talk app. Keep up the good work! 💪👏🌟

oooh so the edited post shows in the quoted post - maybe you should lock that down, as if I am quoting, I dont want to have what I quoted changed??

GlobetrottingPercy · 23/08/2023 09:58

Great news, finally! Hoping we can bump this to get it into active so that all users have a better chance of seeing it.

They had a really annoying pop up for the new feeds thing, a feature that no one asked for but only a thread for a much wanted feature like an edit button. Confused

I think it would be a good idea to add a one time pop up when people come on the site today to let them know about the edit button feature. Especially as it's easy to miss if you don't click the 3 dots.

Ooh, exciting! I’m one who’s not a fan of a like button though

Me neither. I think it would be an awful addition. And a dislike even more so.

Summa23 · 23/08/2023 10:36

I'm probably the only one that does not like this . It would allow certain posters to bitch then edit to 'reword' what they said. And make op or others seem like their going mad or taking the poster the wrong way .

When you quote does it update to the new version of the post?
