UPDATE FROM MNHQ - new edit feature

YetAnotherBeckyMumsnet · 23/08/2023 09:28

We’re pleased to announce that we’re introducing an edit feature.

Historically, we’ve been hesitant to introduce edits because of concerns that historical revisions could cause confusion.

We’re mitigating this by implementing both a time limit (you’ll have a short period of time to edit your post) and ensuring the edit history will be visible to all. The edit feature is designed for minor corrections, such as fixing spelling mistakes and grammar errors that don't change the context of your post. It should not be used to change the overall meaning or intention of your original message. We’re adding a new report option so you can let us know if you think anyone is abusing the feature.

To edit your post:
Select the ‘...’ menu on the post you want to edit
Select ‘Edit’
Fix any mistakes
Select ‘Update’ to save your changes

To see the edit history of a post:
Select the ‘Edited’ label on the post

As some of you may know, we’re currently working on rebuilding our mobile Talk app so app users can access features that are available on our website. Whilst this work is underway, users won’t be able to edit their posts in the app, but they will be able to see when a post has been edited and view the edit history. iOS users will need to make sure they’ve updated to the latest version. The update for Android will be coming imminently and we’ll let you know when it’s available.

We know it’s frustrating for app users at the moment - the rebuild will be a huge improvement but it’s a huge job and is taking time. We really appreciate your patience.

We hope you find the edit button useful - we’ve added edit guidance to our Talk Guidelines, but if you’ve any questions or problems, please add to the thread.

Thanks, MNHQ

No- can't do it😂

I'm probably the only one that does not like this . It would allow certain posters to bitch then edit to 'reword' what they said. And make op or others seem like their going mad or taking the poster the wrong way .

You get the full post history though, and posts are clearly flagged as edited, so posters can’t hide what they’ve already posted.

This really isn't going to happen. There's a history of any edits on the post, so you can easily see what a poster has said prior to editing the post.

GirlsWithGuitars · 23/08/2023 10:38

What is the time period over which you can edit?

Are we talking seconds, minutes, hours or days here?

It seems to be at least a minute!

Trevorton · 23/08/2023 10:41

I just found it before seeing this post. Excellent feature and finally!

Trevorton · 23/08/2023 10:48

GlobetrottingPercy · 23/08/2023 09:58

Great news, finally! Hoping we can bump this to get it into active so that all users have a better chance of seeing it.

Edited

I have posted it in chat also so spreading the word

PrincessFiorimonde · 23/08/2023 10:50

I was going to ask the same question as GirlsWithGuitars.* *

Edited

It’s under ten minutes.

Yes yes yes this one next please. I’ll take a dislike button while I’m at it.

And @CallieJones you do have to remember that some of us just talk nonsense that even an edit button can’t help.

It's things like "I typewriter going sellotape far far orange.' In a conversation about gardening for example.

Allschoolsareartschools · 23/08/2023 10:53

Great news & works!!

Then you can use the reporting feature for inappropriate edits

Finally! So glad you're doing this. Even Whatsapp has edit now, so MN was an outlier.

WhatsApp has edit?!

It’s under ten minutes.

I think five minutes, based on watching this post.

AutumnCrow · 23/08/2023 11:03

Thank you very much, @YetAnotherBeckyMumsnet. Smile

I hope posters use this for the purposes intended and don't have to be sent to their rooms without supper for extreme naughtiness.

Actually I'm looking forward to people not being able to claim that some pretty grim things they've come out with were 'just a typo, fuckin chill huh?', now that they can correct their 'typos' and will be expected to do so.

OnionBhajis · 23/08/2023 11:04

Just posting to test this!

Oooh it worked!

IthinkIsawahairbrushbackthere · 23/08/2023 11:15

I've made a mistake.

It works!

Roussette · 23/08/2023 11:23

@YetAnotherBeckyMumsnet

Thank you. I made a mistake with an extra apostrophe in a post early this morning and I hated that I couldn't correct that. I know I can't go back hours and do that now, but to see it straightaway and be able to correct is great!

ElthamLemur · 23/08/2023 11:27

Was just checking if you could delete the whole thing, but realised that 1. You have to enter something in the box and 2. The original text is visible in the history.

BertieBotts · 23/08/2023 11:28

now that they can correct their 'typos' and will be expected to do so.

Do you think that will really be the case? I don't intend to correct every single typo that I've made, unless it's something hat drastically changes the wording of the sentence (e.g. missing out a crucial "not")

BertieBotts · 23/08/2023 11:28

Case in point Hmm grin]

lunaalice · 23/08/2023 11:28

Oh I only ever use the app.

YetAnotherBeckyMumsnet · 23/08/2023 11:29

You're welcome @Roussette - and if you've missed the edit window don't forget we're happy to do it for you.

Also having a go

Thanks MNHQ. Very grateful for this.

PS It works!

ElthamLemur · 23/08/2023 11:30

Inevitably there will be people who still correct typos the old way and others who jump on going “Don’t you know there’s an edit feature? “

Hours of fun.

But thanks MNHQ!

Elvera2 · 23/08/2023 11:30

Testing
it works
I can’t get it to work on my mobile one, though
