UPDATE FROM MNHQ - new edit feature

YetAnotherBeckyMumsnet · 23/08/2023 09:28

We’re pleased to announce that we’re introducing an edit feature.

Historically, we’ve been hesitant to introduce edits because of concerns that historical revisions could cause confusion.

We’re mitigating this by implementing both a time limit (you’ll have a short period of time to edit your post) and ensuring the edit history will be visible to all. The edit feature is designed for minor corrections, such as fixing spelling mistakes and grammar errors that don't change the context of your post. It should not be used to change the overall meaning or intention of your original message. We’re adding a new report option so you can let us know if you think anyone is abusing the feature.

To edit your post:
Select the ‘...’ menu on the post you want to edit
Select ‘Edit’
Fix any mistakes
Select ‘Update’ to save your changes

To see the edit history of a post:
Select the ‘Edited’ label on the post

As some of you may know, we’re currently working on rebuilding our mobile Talk app so app users can access features that are available on our website. Whilst this work is underway, users won’t be able to edit their posts in the app, but they will be able to see when a post has been edited and view the edit history. iOS users will need to make sure they’ve updated to the latest version. The update for Android will be coming imminently and we’ll let you know when it’s available.

We know it’s frustrating for app users at the moment - the rebuild will be a huge improvement but it’s a huge job and is taking time. We really appreciate your patience.

We hope you find the edit button useful - we’ve added edit guidance to our Talk Guidelines, but if you’ve any questions or problems, please add to the thread.

Thanks, MNHQ

Finally. Thanks

😍😍😍

BertieBotts · 23/08/2023 09:46

Oooh interesting

Testing testing 123

It worked! And can I do it thrice?

cheezncrackers · 23/08/2023 09:47

Finally! So glad you're doing this. Even Whatsapp has edit now, so MN was an outlier.

pizzaHeart · 23/08/2023 09:49

Thank you , it’s good news.
Will test it later.

LateSummerLobelia · 23/08/2023 09:49

Oooh- good that you can identify the edits made by the user. That means hopefully people can't lie about what they said the first time!

Elvera2 · 23/08/2023 09:49

Great, next thing I would like to see is a block button for certain posters. It would stop threads descending into bun fights and being deleted.

ReeseWitherfork · 23/08/2023 09:50

Excellent news!

Gazelda · 23/08/2023 09:50

Fabulous!

This is actually really useful to see how it works too, thanks BertieBotts

Pancakebatter · 23/08/2023 09:52

Where is the menu option though and how do you find it?

Wendysfriend · 23/08/2023 09:52

Fantastic 🙌🙌🙌🙌 no more random words posted all through threads.

D1nopawus · 23/08/2023 09:56

Hallelujah!

I still don't know why it's easier to spot mistakes after posting, but this could save my blushes.

I know! And some people on here LOVE to point out your spelling mistakes. If I see mistakes on a post I read it the correct way and don't even bat an eyelash.

GlobetrottingPercy · 23/08/2023 09:58

Great news, finally! Hoping we can bump this to get it into active so that all users have a better chance of seeing it.

Augend23 · 23/08/2023 09:59

This is a great idea, time limit and edit history hopefully keep things sensible but also mean typos etc can be edited out.

Thank you!

Ooh, and I can even edit this

GlobetrottingPercy · 23/08/2023 09:59

^I didn’t actually mean to press save on that edit, sorry folks.

Do you mean the quote button? I’ve tried it and there is no edit feature.

Clymene · 23/08/2023 10:01

Ooh how exciting!

just corrected a deliberate typo there 😁

Clefable · 23/08/2023 10:02

Woohoo! And wahay!

I have the edit option when I click on my own post - see image, at the bottom of the menu.

UPDATE FROM MNHQ - new edit feature
CallieJones · 23/08/2023 10:04

Good. Recently I've noticed people writing some sentences that are absolute gobbledegook. As if auto correct has changed most of the words into completely different words. Hopefully people will be able to recorrect them so they make sense.

YetAnotherBeckyMumsnet · 23/08/2023 10:06

@Pancakebatter are you on mobile/desktop?

Thank you
