UPDATE FROM MNHQ - new edit feature

YetAnotherBeckyMumsnet · 23/08/2023 09:28

We’re pleased to announce that we’re introducing an edit feature.

Historically, we’ve been hesitant to introduce edits because of concerns that historical revisions could cause confusion.

We’re mitigating this by implementing both a time limit (you’ll have a short period of time to edit your post) and ensuring the edit history will be visible to all. The edit feature is designed for minor corrections, such as fixing spelling mistakes and grammar errors that don't change the context of your post. It should not be used to change the overall meaning or intention of your original message. We’re adding a new report option so you can let us know if you think anyone is abusing the feature.

To edit your post:
Select the ‘...’ menu on the post you want to edit
Select ‘Edit’
Fix any mistakes
Select ‘Update’ to save your changes

To see the edit history of a post:
Select the ‘Edited’ label on the post

As some of you may know, we’re currently working on rebuilding our mobile Talk app so app users can access features that are available on our website. Whilst this work is underway, users won’t be able to edit their posts in the app, but they will be able to see when a post has been edited and view the edit history. iOS users will need to make sure they’ve updated to the latest version. The update for Android will be coming imminently and we’ll let you know when it’s available.

We know it’s frustrating for app users at the moment - the rebuild will be a huge improvement but it’s a huge job and is taking time. We really appreciate your patience.

We hope you find the edit button useful - we’ve added edit guidance to our Talk Guidelines, but if you’ve any questions or problems, please add to the thread.

Thanks, MNHQ

No- can't do it😂

I can’t do it either, no edit button.

Blondeshavemorefun · 23/08/2023 11:32

It's great you can edit to do spelling mistakes - my iphone seems to change words

But annoying doesn't work on the app as you all wanted us to use the app - which I do more so now due to the slowness of long threads via safari

so why have something that doesn't work on a site you want us to use?

Same with messages. You can't message someone on the app easily or see if you have a message via the bouncing blue/green 1 unless on safari /chrome etx

LoveThisUsername · 23/08/2023 11:34

What's the time limit please?

KimberleyClark · 23/08/2023 11:34

Ah I see, the dit button only shows just after you’ve posted. I see the logic of that.

They do address this in the OP @Blondeshavemorefun :

Puppyfarmquestion · 23/08/2023 11:44

Can the guidelines include that it be used to update OP when the thread has moved on?

Update: I've decided that's a good idea. Thanks everyone.

viques · 23/08/2023 11:48

Having a try out .

I don't think that will work as you can only edit for 5 (I think) mins.

Edited

That would only work if it was within the 10 minutes or so edit window though...

BodegaSushi · 23/08/2023 11:57

Amazing, thank you. Just updated on the iOS app and viewing edits is easy. Looking forward to the app update!

Rockbird · 23/08/2023 11:58

Great news. Now I'm going to play!

Inkypot · 23/08/2023 11:58

Wonderful and I appreciate the time limiting feature as that hopefully maintains an element of safety too.

BodegaSushi · 23/08/2023 11:59

Wonder if it works on the mobile site…

Oh that’s fab news!

And it works perfectly!

PuppyMonkey · 23/08/2023 12:08

I don’t know what the bug fiss is about, I’ve never needed an edit button personally.
