Moderation Sex Board

onirgellep · 13/04/2023 23:06

Back in February Justine* committed to an urgent review of moderation of the Sex Board subsequent to the considerable concerns mainly arising from the longstanding Sex Chat thread

Unsurprisingly, issues continue

Would it be possible to have an update on the progress of the review?

And hear when do you anticipate it being completed and the new moderation put into action?

Thank you

I'm afraid I'm unable to link Justine's post on the thread References to Underage Sex on the Sex Board* page 13

I should also be most interested in any clarification or update that MNHQ can give us.
Events over the last couple of days have shown very clearly that robust moderation is absolutely needed on the sex boards.
I am aware that MNHQ can only moderate retroactively.
I was under the impression that the regular posters on the sex board had undertaken to report any dodgy posts themselves.

Far from doing this, another thread which invited hook-ups was started yesterday. The OP of the thread did not report it (needless to say) and was dismayed when MNHQ received a report and deleted it.

TheShellBeach · 13/04/2023 23:17

On that particular thread, the OP posted a link to a site which included sex chats about incest and teen sex.
This is obviously a safeguarding issue and in direct contravention of MNHQ's stated policies.

onirgellep · 13/04/2023 23:22

Thank you - that looks very clear @TheShellBeach

Ah! Is this the final outcome of Justine's review??

If so that's a bit tricky wrt to how effective it's been?

Hmmm

Better moderation is desperately needed. The thread yesterday was a real low. These posters are getting bolder and more overconfident every time they get away with something else.

Bolder and more brazen, and with no conscience, either.
When it was noted that the website which was linked in yesterday's thread had chat rooms for incest and teen sex, the posters on the sex chat still defended it.
Unbelievably.

The sex topic is no different to other topics on the board. Posts get reported and mn decide if they need deleting.

I would say way more posts get deleted from AIBU for example than the sex topic.

It's hilarious that a group of you have appointed yourself as 'moderators' of the sex topic. A topic that you have zero interest in, but monitor 24/7 so you can A) get offended and report posts and B) go on to other forums and discuss what you have found. But whatever... carry on. You obviously have a lot of time on your hands.

Also at no point did mumsnet say 'regular users' of the sex topic are responsible for moderating the topic. How do you even define a regular user? There is no list of names for who is responsible for this. The 'sex people' as you call them are not on the topic 24/7. They are not held responsible for reporting posts you find offensive. I may see a post and think it's fine. You see the same post and have concerns. That is then on you to report it. That's how mumsnet works.

Anyway- the link above links to what Justine ACTUALLY said about it so you have your answer. No mention of users of the sex topic being held accountable for the policing of the topic. That's something you made up.

If a regular poster said they would report a thread they felt was in inappropriate then I'm sure that's true. You have no idea who reports what so saying things like the regular posters didn't report xyz is based on zero evidence anyway.

AIBU as a comparator - much bigger/busier so more deletions

Sex Board not a closed group -anyone can visit it, as often as they like and form whatever opinion they like/report any concerns as they see fit.

Self-moderation is a prerequisite for post-moderation for all MN no exemptions

The thread yesterday appears to have been inappropriate. I would hope that those who posted it and posted on it will not post similarly in future. A link to a site that hosts underage and incest content is unsavoury.

Yes 100% agree with this. As I said, people with no interest in the sex topic but choose to police it- carry on! No harm done to anyone (until they start trolling users on another forum but that's not a MN issue)

Again 100% agree. You see a post you don't like for whatever reason then its on you to report it. 'Regular' users of the sex topic are not held accountable for the policing of the topic. You can't pile on one poster from the sex topic and make her accountable for not moderating the topic as you see fit. It is not her job any more than its your job. Again, you have no idea who has reported what so you are not in a position to comment on whether regular users are reporting things or not.

I don't think it was underage sex. There were mentions of teen sex but not underage sex. I haven't been on the website myself as I have zero interest in it so I may be wrong.

BillyNighysWife · 14/04/2023 08:21

I don’t understand what’s happening on. this thread.

The OP is pointing out that there continue to be really unacceptable (not just ‘inappropriate’) posts on sex threads and that the present moderation system isn’t working.

Why aren’t posters responding her straightforward and really important point instead of splitting hairs ?

Lots of people have left MN because if this issue. I am spending a lot less time on here. Do MN care?

horridjobescapee · 14/04/2023 08:23

@HornyBee teen sex then. And incest. I'm rather shocked that you have a problem with my use of "under age" and pull me up on it, and yet are silent on the incest.

TheShellBeach · 14/04/2023 08:26

Incest and teen sex very much suggest underage sex and a site which hosts something so unsavoury seems to have no scruples and should be regarded as highly suspect.

TheShellBeach · 14/04/2023 08:27

And I am more than disappointed that anyone sees fit to defend it.

There is a very big difference in the eyes of the law between underage sex and legal age sex so I think it's an important point.
Incest is illegal. Are stories about incest illegal? Murder is illegal but people write best selling novels about it...? 🤷🏼‍♀️
Not really sure what you want me to say?
I have no interest in incest, teen sex or underage sex.

horridjobescapee · 14/04/2023 08:31

I was using under age in the sense of under the age of majority ie under the age of 18.

I would find a sex site that hosts stories about teenaged sex and incest unsavoury at best and it isn't a site that I'd expect anyone to be defending on mumsnet to be honest.

If you're talking about me, please explain where I have defended that? Pointing out that it was my understanding that the website mentioned teen sex not underage sex is not me defending anything. It is getting the facts straight.

🤣🤣🤣 I'm not defending the website. I am just clarifying the facts.

I don't find anything funny about it. Please show me where I said a website about teen sex and incest was funny.
