Why is Sex topic now in Active?

It never used to be there before. It doesn't really seem appropriate with some of the titles.

It really does @AnonymousHippopotamus . The thread linked above where Ann Summers were trying to push their maternity/postpartum range showed the overwhelming MN response which is to support and care for postpartum mothers, not try to flog them scratchy uncomfortable knickers. Despite the rebuttal, here they are a couple of years later writing promotional posts on how women need to be sexy after giving birth. It feels like preying on the vulnerable and upholding a fuckton of patriarchal bullshit which MN has always been so robust in telling to fuck off. It feels insidious and unpleasant and so sneaky to combine it with taking safeguards off the sex board.

@CPL593H

it isn't hard to believe there will be PMing by an unquantifiable number of lurkers who don't post on thread.
That's why I thought it important to ask female sex board users of their experience and how MN mods reacted.

I was told and do appreciate it would be better asked by a woman but none so far seem willing to do so.

I think what happens from hereon in is most concerning, if the profile of the board remains at its newly elevated level of visibility.

AutumnLeavesFallingIntoPlace · 22/02/2023 15:21

And here's a cheering thought: should any new mother be too uptight and pearl clutchy to pack her hospital bag with white lacy nylon thongs and cock rings or heed the helpful sex advice Ann Summers are so kindly doling out, at least their neglected husbands can hop straight on the sex chat for those 'not getting any at home' in search of 'any available female'. Just what Mumsnet has always stood for!

An interesting thread from nearly 2 years ago. See the posts on 7 April at 11.18 and 20.59 which are particularly interesting.

link to Mumsnet thread

So it looks like this sexification of the site has been in the planning for a long time. I suspect HQ's silence is because they NOW have squeaky bum because they've mightily pissed their users off, and it must have become very apparent to the sponsors/advertisers that Mumsnet is not, infact, a a place where randy Mums are desperate to talk about products like vibrators and nasty nylon underwear all the livelong day.

Quite embarrassing for them and potentially quite costly.

On Page 4 of your link someone has linked to the [same] original OP by MNHQ on the Sex topic- some of the replies are heart-breaking

The final message is from the OP LauraMNHQ saying 'yeah maybe not a good idea then' [paraphrased]

So what changed?

WombsofWimbledon · 22/02/2023 15:31

It’s a shame that the Bounty ladies are no more (I think?). Lost opportunity for a MN vibrator collab there.

I was just coming back to say something like this 😁

The opinions of mumsnetters haven't changed in the last couple of years, but Ann Summers are going to keep trying. No means no FFS.

AutumnLeavesFallingIntoPlace · 22/02/2023 16:44

So as this thread is almost full, does anyone volunteer as tribute to start another politely requesting MN address:

  • that no one, on or off the sex board wants it on Active
  • that some of us would like to know to what extent Ann Summers/other advertisers have dictated the change in sex board visibility and registration requirements
  • the lack of safeguarding and age verification on the sex chat thread which invites off site explicit conversations and is vulnerable to abusers preying on MN's trustworthy reputation
  • why MN have done such a u turn on their previous stance on the sex board and its likely attraction of trolls to the wider site?
  • the proliferation of 'promoted by mumsnet' advertising posts pushing sex toys on postpartum women
Is that it?
lovem · 22/02/2023 17:05

I could, but think you've got the perfect OP post there @AutumnLeavesFallingIntoPlace - do you want to go for it and post the link here? 🙂

Surplus2requirements · 22/02/2023 17:10

@AutumnLeavesFallingIntoPlace that sounds perfect.

Hopefully with minimum of chat, more a list of members that support the OP like a petition

CPL593H · 22/02/2023 17:13

I think that really sums it up @AutumnLeavesFallingIntoPlace

MothralovesGojira · 22/02/2023 17:45

And still no further comment or response from MNHQ - says it all really.

If the sex topic isn't taken off Active in the next 7 days then I will deregister myself and not visit again which is a shame because I get a lot of comfort from the cancer support thread at the moment.

CurrentHun · 22/02/2023 18:04

I really dislike this kind of monetisation at all costs approach- it feels so disrespectful to MN posters who ‘are’ the site. We provide the content which drives the visits to the site and thus the advertising and all the revenue and public profile, entirely for free. This goodwill is a really precious asset and should be carefully looked after, not taken for granted.

AutumnLeavesFallingIntoPlace · 22/02/2023 18:13

I've started a new thread, not sure how to link!

Sex board in Active and Ann Summers

'If the sex topic isn't taken off Active in the next 7 days then I will deregister myself and not visit again'

Why though if you can hide it, or infact just not click on it? None of the boards are compulsory viewing. It seems a strange stance to make if you get comfort from other threads.

I bet for every one who deregs others will join thinking it is a forward thinking, modern site. Again, sex toys are very common, Ann summers purchases very common as evidenced by their high profile on every high stdeet, chats are very common it isn't the depraved grubby place some of you seem convinced it is.

Live and let live.

hryllilegur · 22/02/2023 18:45

People aren’t going to see ever increasing sex content online and think: oh how refreshing and unusual. Isn’t this a forward thinking place? You just don’t find sex talk all over the place online.

Why are you so desperately keen for MN to be awash with sex chat @Janiie ?

I'm not keem for it to be 'awash', just sex is a normal part of life and healthy relationships and as such adults should be allowed to discuss it. On a dedicated board. Why on earth not?

Yes, because sex is so modern. Hmm

Sparklingbrook · 22/02/2023 18:51

You do seem very keen to continually fly the flag for the Sex Topic in general @Janiie . 🤔

MN aren't making any attempt to ensure it is only adults on that board, @Janiie . No mitigation of the risk of anyone underage joining in on the sexchat thread. Do you think that's normal and healthy?

Sex=MN being forward thinking and modern. Okaaay.

MN doesn’t even have an edit function. 😂

So, what's wrong with that? Or you are suggesting I'm a sex mad deviant? 🤔

It is a forum with many boards. Access the ones relevant to you and leave others to it.

How did you even come to that conclusion? 😆
