Royal section full of hatred

SpaceCandyCoconut · 11/01/2023 12:07

@MNHQ - almost the entire Royal section is becoming the equivalent of the Daily Mail comments section with so much bile and hate for M&H. I found the thread about her wedding dress particularly vindicative and nasty to read.

I'm all for free speech, but where does the line become crossed into targeted attack / hate? I think we're getting pretty close to be honest.

Yes I know I can hide the section - but that misses the point - the frenzy is still going on there. How can we (you, @MNHQ) work to tone down the temperature?

Well, as Justine said publicly this week, it's over 90% sensible.

So I think you'd be better off reporting specific posts which toy think cross the line

i agree with samcro its not so much that there is a thread about the book for example its the fact that most people seem to be starting new threads to discuss tiny segments, such as the ‘Sunken bed’ thread.

Are there rules that you can only start threads on macro level issues as opposed to micro level issues?

Do me a favour

recheck my post and tell me where i make any mention of rules or indeed where i have asked anyone to stop starting threads

ive offered my opinion…or are there rules about that?

They don’t bother me - I don’t need to block the board. I am not concerned at them rolling in at 100x the rate. I’m just pointing out the consequences of the book.

Yes. Sorry.

motherfugga · 11/01/2023 13:24

Agree! I accidentally read the first page of a thread about bridesmaid dresses as it didn't mention RF etc in the title

It was nothing but online bullying. In addition to bitchy speculation aplenty, there was a link to an obviously fake and sensational Tumblr post supposedly written by someone who knows what happened. Really nasty (and stupid!) stuff

Adult bullying is never ok. Even if the bullied is a millionaire.

People who are struggling to heat their homes and feed their families are tired of hearing someone vastly privileged moaning about often trivial things.

That is the issue - people who are struggling to heat their homes and feed their families are being distracted by the right wing media and encouraged to focus their rightous anger on a total irrelevance. Our politicians are letting us down badly as our infrastrucure collapses, businesses go under and workers are forced to strike in a futile attempt to highlight the problems - but look over there, shiny thing.

I noticed peoole talking and watching a lot of football. Where are your complaints that football matches should be banned so we can all focus on politicians? What about those cyclists who disappear for hours at the weekend? What about family get togethers, work, gardening? Let's ban them all to talk about politics.
The book is in both right and left wing newspapers. Where's your condemnation for the Guardian and the Mirror?

Did you not spot it's in the Royal Family topic?

I think you need to report the bullying posts on the thread. It would be a shame if it all went (learning all sorts of interesting stuff about Princess Angela and how couturiers put dresses together. My impression of the thread as a whole is titally different to yours

The tumblr link is from 2019 - and there are posts making clear that it's third hand hearsay. It's not a major part of the thread

The inference from your post is that you're not bothered about the book being discussed but it should stay on one thread about the book itself, rather than spreading onto several threads about minor incidents.
Therefore, as you're posting on site stuff, it reads that your complaint is that people are starting too many threads on minor issues.

Allthegoodnamesarechosen · 11/01/2023 13:41

Dog bowl thread was hilarious. I recommended it to some friends who don’t normally look at MN, and they were amazed at the wit and ingenuity of a lot of the posters.

the frozen todger and the stallion in the field were pretty good, too.

Choconut · 11/01/2023 13:42

I'm not an MM fan at all but I couldn't see what the problem was with her dress being like someone else's, a lot of wedding dresses look similar IMO and she certainly looked beautiful in it.

User787878787878 · 11/01/2023 14:38

I posted on a thread about the bridesmaids dresses. Like any thread on MN there were some posters being informative, some being funny, some being silly, some derailing, and some that were totally batshit.

I found it interesting from a dressmaker perspective. I don't think it's "hateful" to critique the construction of a dress from a technical perspective. And I think it's unfair to dismiss every post on a thread because of the actions of a few.

In relation to people ignoring the "real" issues - I get a bit fed up of this. I'm sure it's not the intention but sometimes these criticisms can come across as being quite patronising. I can be concerned about the NHS and also enjoy some light relief on a funny memes thread; one doesn't diminish the other. Most people I know are able to look beyond single-issue whataboutery, and recognise that many of us can be interested/involved/active in many things.

User787878787878 · 11/01/2023 14:40

Incidentally, my critique was in relation to the construction of Charlotte's dress. MM wedding dress was lovely, although I preferred her reception dress.

Can't people talk about a variety of things that interest them, though? It doesnt have to be limited to cost of living. There have been threads on that for practically the entire year. Aren't people entitled to have a break from that and discuss another current affair topic, the royal family? Should I only be allowed to talk about things politicians don't want me to? That sounds very anti democratic to me.

People can talk about whatever they like. I didn’t say they shouldn’t. And I didn’t say they couldn’t. I said politicians would be loving it.

InsiderLookingOut · 11/01/2023 15:38

I wonder when people will stop using mentally unwell, mental health issues or mental illness as a put down. It says more about the person using these terms than the so-called "unhinged" or "deranged" or "mentally unwell" person they're supposedly better than.

MayThe4th · 11/01/2023 15:53

I have hidden the entire rf topic because frankly I am not remotely interested in any of it.

And here’s the thing. If you’ve read through multiple threads then clearly you’re interested in it, so why not impart your opinion on the thread rather than starting a royal family discussion outside of the royal family topic which most of us have hidden for good reason.

The only thing I would say is, Meggan has been quiet throughout this, so I’m not entirely sure why people are having a go at her rather than just Harry.

Also, it’s a bit of a ridiculous argument to suggest that anyone who has taken issue with Meggan in the past has done so purely because they’re racist. People are entitled to an opinion about someone who is of a different race to them on the basis of what they have done, it doesn’t make someone racist to express such an opinion, and although there are going to be some who are, we need to step away from this notion that anyone of a different race should be above criticism on the basis that anyone who does criticise must be racist.

LadyKenya · 11/01/2023 16:15

W0tnow · 11/01/2023 12:14

I bet the politicians love it. No one is talking about the NHS, or Cost of Living, the War. Or anything that matters, really.

This. The masses are easily distracted from the real problems going on. If only all that energy could effect real, positive change for the Country.

SirChenjins · 11/01/2023 16:17

Hide the topic - it's really easy to do

purpledalmation · 11/01/2023 16:59

Oh for goodness sake. People can have differing opinions and they can also focus on more than one area at a time. Heating my home doesn't consume my every waking moment and many people are just absorbing the increases in the cost of living. They take an interest in the environment but also find the royals interesting. We are women. We can mentally multitask

PAFMO · 11/01/2023 17:03

It's been like this about Meghan for years.
That was "just" racism though. Coming over here, taking our Prince, doesn't Kate's coat look nice etc.
But now the crazies are having a feeding frenzy and feel vindicated. There only used to be two crazies posting 24/7 but now it's an absolute sewer of hatred.

The football threads don't tend to pile hate on brown people.

TaRaDeBumDeAy · 11/01/2023 17:06

Thestagshead · 11/01/2023 12:19

You can’t silence people as you don’t like their opinions , so rush to class it as hate as a way to silence.

Exactly. Same with the pathetic cries of racism. People can dislike other people for other reasons. They are also allowed to dislike people that aren't white. It's so tedious.

Phrenologistsfinger · 11/01/2023 17:07

Littlechickenhead · 11/01/2023 12:44

Threads about the royals have always been unhinged on MN and have got even worse since Meghan got involved because she’s catnip for the racists. I’ve hidden the royals board because frankly, I think a lot of the posters on there are suffering from mental health issues.

This

At the moment, there's v little about her. Other than the wedding dress and lipgloss stuff, both of which were put (or put back) into public domain my Harry.

Some sympathy for what sort of twat she's lumbered herself with. His account of HR/bullying doesn't seem to have attracted much comment

JaneJeffer · 11/01/2023 17:11

I see all these posts about Meghan hatred but she has barely been mentioned unless it's something Harry said about her.

Mugagbe - great guy. Pol pot- underrated.

Btw - is Harry black because apparently we’re racist for tearing apart his story book. 🤷‍♀️

Cocolapew · 11/01/2023 17:17

I've been reading them, I usually have it hidden, because I'm interested in what people are saying about the book. It's topical a
There is very little about Meghan because Harry 'wrote' the book.
The tiara one was really interesting.
