New feature - save threads & posts

KatyMumsnet · 01/12/2022 11:55

Hi all,

During the course of our website upgrade we did a lot of user testing with Mumsnetters - one of the things they said they'd like was to be able to save interesting threads and posts to come back to later, so we’ve built a new save feature (on the website only for now) and you’ll soon see the save option appear on posts.

There are now 4 ways to curate the content you want to find again or be notified about:

  • I’m on - threads you’ve commented on
  • I started - threads you started
  • I’m watching - threads you want to see updates on and receive notifications about
  • Saved - threads & posts you’ve saved to come back to later
And we’ve grouped these under the umbrella term ‘My lists’ which you can access via the blue navigation bar at the bottom of the screen on mobile or via the ‘My Mumsnet’ menu (the person icon) in the top right on desktop or mobile when you’re logged in. We hope this will help new users understand how to use these features.

We’ve also slightly rejigged the design so you can save, share and report posts more easily.

We hope you find it useful and as always we welcome feedback!

Hi all,

Thanks for all the feedback! Apologies it's taken me a few days to post an update.

We're seeing a high number of people engaging with the buttons which indicates it's a useful thing to have them out on the posts, but we're taking all the feedback on board and discussing ways in which we can make it a better user experience.

It looks like there is some confusion about how 'share' works... when you click share on a specific post, then it will generate a direct link to that post. If you want to share at thread level then you can either share the URL or click share on the opening post.

All the buttons (apart from save) were already on the page so it's unlikely that the issues with speed have been caused by this change, but we are investigating this separately.

We had an issue with the icons across the whole site yesterday and this morning but that has now been resolved so you should no longer be seeing the empty buttons.

Are you sure the engagement with the buttons is actively clicking them, rather than fat fingers catching them, and accompanied by a string of swear words and an attempt to cancel whatever has been accidently clicked?

Surely now they are there, people will have to 'engage' with them because that's the only option if you want to use those functions?

IWannaBeInTheRoomWhereItHappens · 06/12/2022 12:03

Yes, I keep hitting the save button by accident when scrolling down!

@KatyMumsnet Are you able to measure how many times people hit the "report" button but then don't go on to make a report?

I know I am not the only one who has hit "report" numerous times in the last few days because it is now exactly where "bookmark" used to be.

Are you able to tell how many clicks on the "share" button are purely out of idle curiousity to see what happens that is different to copying and pasting a thread url. Spoiler: nothing

KatyMumsnet · 06/12/2022 12:10

When we release something we track the performance before and after and we can see a big jump in engagement with these features. We're aware that any changes might lead to additional interest to begin with or potentially accidental clicks so we will track the change over time to see whether or not it is sustained. We can also see whether people complete actions like report. We'll take all this in to account along with the feedback to see how we can improve!

A shame that so many not liking it doesn’t matter but what can you do

CorporateBull · 06/12/2022 13:05

Are all the buttons being used more? I am using bookmark like I always have, tried to share once without success, and otherwise have only pressed anything else by mistake!

SoupDragon · 06/12/2022 14:31

It's ridiculous that "quote" has been hidden away.

i also think it's ridiculous that "add message" is all the way over to the left but I imagine left handlers are happy with that.

KateBain · 06/12/2022 15:50

Well yeah ... everyone's just using the bookmark icon as usual.

BruceAndNosh · 06/12/2022 17:50

MNHQ was very keen on the much derided "you might also like" option, saying that it was aimed at new users who arrived at MN from an untargeted search.
So why fill their first page with clutter like report and share, yet hide Quote. Newbies will have no idea it's there!

L1ttledrummergirl · 06/12/2022 18:31

I've engaged several times- by accident when I brush the buttons trying to hold the phone and scroll with one hand. It's atrocious.

Lougle · 06/12/2022 21:08

I keep hitting 'see next' when I mean to bookmark. I hate the new format.

Which features are being used more than previously?

Can you see the point that many of us are making - about the wasted space on phone screens in particular?

Bosky · 07/12/2022 04:59

It will be interesting to know how often the different features are used. My guess is that Quote would be used more often than Share so I agree with PP that it seems odd to hide Quote under the 3 dots.

I have nearly hit Report instead instead of Bookmark almost every time I have Bookmarked since the new layout came out.

I think Report should be moved back to being the last option or hidden under the 3 dots.

KatyMumsnet - "All the buttons (apart from save) were already on the page so it's unlikely that the issues with speed have been caused by this change, but we are investigating this separately."

So people are perceiving that more space is being taken up on screen since extra buttons were added, as well as the loss of the empty space on the left of the "button bar" making it slower to access the display when scrolling.

I wonder if these effects will be temporary and it is just the novelty of the change in the display that is messing with our perception and reaction times?

This. Quote is far more useful than share but I guess MN would rather we use share and advertise the site.

I agree, however I doubt we'll get a truthful answer from MNHQ as it's clear they want to promote saving and sharing over the quote feature.

I wouldn't mind the buttons as much if we could change the order or customise which were shown. As at least then users could adapt it to suit which buttons they use most often, and hide the other options behind the ... menu. I'm tired of clicking report as it's in the same place as the bookmark feature used to be, and I'm never going to share a post so would prefer to change that spot for the quote feature. But MNHQ can't even add an edit button, so I guess customising the buttons is far too complicated.

Question...if you saveapost or thread and either is deleted are they still saved under the lists page? Ie can we still see them?

Hi.

If we save or share a post or thread, and it is deleted, does this mean it will not be saved any more? And loads of shares could end up in blank links?

Have you tested what happens to these new features when you delete posts and threads, it is a regular thing on here so should we even bother?
