New feature - save threads & posts

KatyMumsnet · 01/12/2022 11:55

Hi all,

During the course of our website upgrade we did a lot of user testing with Mumsnetters - one of the things they said they'd like was to be able to save interesting threads and posts to come back to later, so we’ve built a new save feature (on the website only for now) and you’ll soon see the save option appear on posts.

There are now 4 ways to curate the content you want to find again or be notified about:

  • I’m on - threads you’ve commented on
  • I started - threads you started
  • I’m watching - threads you want to see updates on and receive notifications about
  • Saved - threads & posts you’ve saved to come back to later
And we’ve grouped these under the umbrella term ‘My lists’ which you can access via the blue navigation bar at the bottom of the screen on mobile or via the ‘My Mumsnet’ menu (the person icon) in the top right on desktop or mobile when you’re logged in. We hope this will help new users understand how to use these features.

We’ve also slightly rejigged the design so you can save, share and report posts more easily.

We hope you find it useful and as always we welcome feedback!

The one click is back?

Now those blue icons…

bizzey · 01/12/2022 13:40

Yay!
Now please can the thing at the bottom of the posts go .

KatyMumsnet · 01/12/2022 13:41

Hi all, thanks for your feedback!

We're taking everything on board and we don't want to make your experience more difficult so we're putting 'I'm on' back in the bottom blue navigation bar. We will also put the 'add message' button back on desktop posts.

The 'my lists' feature is still available in the menu under the 'my mumsnet' menu which is the person icon in the top left of the website.

The users who suggested this feature wanted somewhere to save threads and posts without being notified about them which wasn't possible when using watch. The majority of users have email and web notifications turned on and watch is how you manage what you're notified about.

Oh, the IO button has just come back! Thank you MN, the dislike must have been pretty universal 😆

This! I feel like I’m back to being annoying but what did the UX say on this? Was it done?

Like lots of others on this thread, I use TIO to navigate quickly. I don’t think I’ve ever in the decade of using MN wanted to share a post with anyone. So that bottom bar feels very skewiff now, and clicking twice to move across TIO is so annoying.

I am guessing there was no UX information and no UX team. If there is, it would be really interesting to see how they came to this conclusion.

I work in CI. This is a basic. Easier not more difficult or annoying. I agree with you 100%

Barely any space left for actual posts!

Who would I want to share a post with?

People, have you ever shared a post?

Never!

Yarnosaura · 01/12/2022 13:45

It is incredibly annoying, and just as one piece of new clutter was removed here we have more clutter!

It is visually annoying and disorientating.

The heart for save seems odd, it might as well be a like button (or is this a stealth like button?).

No direct button for TIO shows poor understanding of how people generally use the site.

Maybe you could also introduce tickers for the posters who like a bit of clutter? And provide an option for those of us who want a cleaner reading experience to opt out of all the clutter.

I just want to read threads, not have to do extra scrolling and extra clicking because there's so much stuff in the way.

DuchessDandelion · 01/12/2022 13:45

Thanks MN :)

Mummylin · 01/12/2022 13:45

Thank god for that, can we now have simple click under previous post to reply back.

Lougle · 01/12/2022 13:46

While we're hear, users can't save their own posts. Is that deliberate?

Mummylin · 01/12/2022 13:47

Sorry I have just seen that add message button will be put back , thanks MN

MarshaBradyo · 01/12/2022 13:48

My eyes. Somehow my post looks like it’s has a green line drawn around it by hand

MarshaBradyo · 01/12/2022 13:49

Or is that a screen shot 😂

Anyway resist the clutter mn pls, it’s not required! And headachey

Yarnosaura · 01/12/2022 13:49

Phew for TIO.

Like many I suspect, I use a throwaway email for MN these days so wouldn't even notice if I was getting email notifications. So I wouldn't assume that just because people haven't turned off a default setting means they like or use it!

The users who suggested this feature wanted somewhere to save threads and posts without being notified about them which wasn't possible when using watch.

I use watch this thread all the time and have never received any notifications of new posts. I just click on "I'm watching" and can easily see which threads have new posts (and how many). Presumably I have opted out in some way in my settings? So there must already have been an option to do this?

I do get an email if I am quoted, but I also know that there is an option to turn this off. Not sure why any extra buttons/clicks are needed?

As an irritating side effect of the new options, I have hit "report" numerous times today as it has now shifted to where the "bookmark" button used to be on my screen.

SoupDragon · 01/12/2022 13:59

We will also put the 'add message' button back on desktop posts.

that's ' great but why on Earth did it get removed in the first place? It completely ruins the functionality of the site!

MarshaBradyo · 01/12/2022 13:48

Yes I was just highlighting how much clutter there is now and how tiny the actual space for actual posts is now!

LizzieSiddal · 01/12/2022 14:15

Please remove the fat ribbon under every post - terrible for mobile users as it fills the screen.

Agree with this, it takes up so much of the screen when on the mobile.

Thank you for being the other buttons back though.

Afterfire · 01/12/2022 14:23

Yay! TIO is back! 🥳

Peridot1 · 01/12/2022 14:24

Thank you @KatyMumsnet!

Lonelycrab · 01/12/2022 14:25

I do not like it mnhq. Too cluttered and tbh I don’t use any of them apart from bookmark.

So I’d say put it back to how it was.
