New feature - save threads & posts

Hi all,

During the course of our website upgrade we did a lot of user testing with Mumsnetters - one of the things they said they'd like was to be able to save interesting threads and posts to come back to later, so we’ve built a new save feature (on the website only for now) and you’ll soon see the save option appear on posts.

There are now 4 ways to curate the content you want to find again or be notified about:

• I’m on - threads you’ve commented on
• I started - threads you started
• I’m watching - threads you want to see updates on and receive notifications about
• Saved - threads & posts you’ve saved to come back to later

And we’ve grouped these under the umbrella term ‘My lists’ which you can access via the blue navigation bar at the bottom of the screen on mobile or via the ‘My Mumsnet’ menu (the person icon) in the top right on desktop or mobile when you’re logged in. We hope this will help new users understand how to use these features.

We’ve also slightly rejigged the design so you can save, share and report posts more easily.

Didn’t lots of us turn off notifications when we started getting those little numbers in the top right all the time where the inbox is? Remember when that was suddenly every notification ever? I know I switched them off then.

I'm usually all for changes but I keep hitting the 'Share' button when scrolling.

What user testing did you do that didn’t generate exactly this feedback about TIO in particular?

Also when I type in the message box and click on a word I've typed to change it, the message box disappears and it brings me back into the thread

Now I can't reply to any threads.... Every time I click add post or click the message box it brings me to THIS thread

@60smusic do you mind telling me what device and browser you are using so we can try and understand what's happening? I've tried to recreate what you've described but I can't see it happening on my phone in chrome or safari and on my laptop chrome or safari

So cluttered. So much wasted space. Can those buttons not go under the three dots instead?

For the love of God, please remove the bloody great big footer under every post. It's far to cluttered and is distracting from the actual posts, especially where they are shorter than a line.

Thank you for listening and reinstating the ‘I’m on’ button. Now please can you remove all the buttons at the bottom of each post? Since the new update a few months ago the amount of posts you could see on a phone screen had already reduced, now it’s even worse!

I just use my Samsung phone, chrome, mumsnet.com. It seems to have sorted now strangely enough. I had tried replying to another post and it brought me back to this thread. I can click back in my message and change the wording now too without the message box disappearing. Must have been my phone

What is this shite?? The whole row of options under every. Single. Post. Is hurting my eyes!

I use MN on my mobile and the new features are cluttering up the space. Can we opt out like we can with the equally unpopular "you might also like" feature?

The massive footer does have netmums feel to it.

Why has the 'see all' on the ops posts been moved to the other side of the screen? Absolutely pointless so why do it?

I know this was said on the other thread about Threads you might like or whatever it was but honestly has MN employed some sort of tech apprentice? Unqualified and cheap? That really is the only thing I can think of.

All these changes are absolutely awful and just making the site difficult to navigate. I just dont understand it at all.

It's so cluttered it's difficult to read posts, especially short ones. I don't like it at all.

I suspect what they haven’t done is put the money into high-quality specialist user research. Getting someone to ask some users in a vaguely defined way is not the same thing.

Any sensible user research activity would presumably show how valuable many MN users find TIO as a navigational tool and a UR should have challenged any change that made that harder to find. You can’t please everyone all of the time, but you can prioritise the features that many users value highly.

I don’t see why save, share, and bookmark have all been highlighted on every single post. All three.

While quote remains in the three dots menu.

I mean I agree that it’s unnecessarily cluttered with it on every post. But it looks like someone has decided that users said they wanted to be able to access individual posts so the teams should whack that with a hammer.

MN must have loads of data about how often people use functionality like report, quote and such like. It’s hard to see how three ways of getting to individual posts seemed the top priority.

I agree. The quote feature is far more useful than save and share, but is hidden under the dots, why not hide the new features? MNHQ insist on adding all these features that no one seems to ask for* but won't add the edit button that was mentioned over 2 years ago when premium was announced.

*I mean MNHQ say people have asked for it, but has anyone actually seen a request for a save or share feature? Heck i've seen more feedback requesting a like button.
