What is it with all these threads being deleted??

Every day now there seems to be a thread deleted on aibu - it's the only section I'm really on, but pretty much every day lately I'll see a thread, read it, then return to it later to get an update and it's been deleted. I've been on Mumsnet since 2009 and threads were rarely deleted until recently , this last year or so it seems to happen so much. Are more people just trying to troll or wind us up, or what's the reason behind this huge increase in deletions?

(Oops - too soon)
seems that several of us are getting fed up with the ‘woke/PC’ world going mad?

Or can someone explain trolls to me? (I get the sex pervert type, hadn’t realised there were other kinds)
eg/ the ketchup one being ‘goady’ - can we not be trusted to ignore it if we don’t want to engage?

Just chipping in to add my frustration with the deleted threads too..

I agree with the idea of an Under the Bridge section for them being moved to. That way the good advice from genuine posters is not lost if someone does a search - but later posters don’t waste time tailoring a response.

And threads like the ketchup one - I just clicked away when it was obviously stupid (didn’t even occur to me it was a troll tbh) but do they really need policing?

Definitely agree that an Under The Bridge section would be a great way to deal with this rather than random and blanket deletions.

Trolls defending trolls
plus ca change

Indeed Hobnobs

I'm experiencing some deja vu here. A while ago another site set itself up as much better than MN in every way and proceeded to blatantly on threads and by PM try encourage posters to jump ship and go to their site instead.

The site was nothing but thread after thread of abuse about MN in general, Justine in particular and various posters who they'd taken a dislike to. It was troll central. It crashed and burned after massive fallings out and attempted unsuccessful revivals.

Of course, those trolls have tried creeping back in to MN. Their style is very familiar.

Lilifer · 05/05/2022 11:34

@BoreOfWhabylon don't worry, I can assure you I'm not trying to set up a rival forum. I like Mumsnet or else I would not be a member now for 13 years and counting - but the deletion of threads has escalated and I think that's worthy of discussion.

I saw the other forum, and it was a total shit show

BoreOfWhabylon · 05/05/2022 11:44

Not you Lilifer.

BIWI · 05/05/2022 11:45

It was a total shitshow, but also a haven for all those who want 'free speech' aka not-even-thinly-disguide racism to be allowed

BIWI · 05/05/2022 11:45

'disguised', obviously Hmm

Went to look at my active threads and the one about raising a glass to women's suffrage was deleted at request of op because of "not many posts" ... in one day.... WTAF. Was a starting discussion on Suffragettes v. Suffragists.

Starting to post less myself, getting fed up of it.

But that doesn't even make sense, why go to the bother of getting a thread deleted just because not many people posted on it? Just leave it stand and forget about it 🤷‍♀️

they (hopefully) look at the posting history

Let's hope that their search function is better than the one they've given us.

And I intended to return and post on that…!

I saw it when there was no replies at all, but didn’t have time to post - topic I feel strongly about though and wanted to raise a virtual glass and agree with the OP

To be fair, that poster came back and confirmed that her partner was female, and revealed she was terminally ill. That combination could potentially be identifying. It also a bit unfair to say she was ‘militant’ about using ‘they’ - she only posted once before confirming the gender! It was other posters who got into a strop because they didn’t know this irrelevant detail.

That deletion makes sense now. I hadn't seen the update from the OP.

In fairness, the troll deleted this morning was interesting on an AS.
Even more interesting is that they were posting on this thread yesterday.
I suppose they got their idea for their sick fuck post from here.

Unfortunately an Under the Bridge would provide would-be trolls with a Masterclass in how to be a good troll. All hairy-handed troll threads in one place, what's not to like, fill yer boots!

hence why MNHQ always get rid, as quickly as they can to wipe the slate clean. It doesn't stop trolls of course but it doesn't encourage it either. I can get that, it makes sense to keep the forum free of troll detritus.

You are actually defending the people who troll about dead babies?

Were you around for Dizzymare?
Were you around for Oliver's Army?

I can only assume not. You really, really need to educate yourself about what these trolls do to people.

I have read a bit about those. I still ask where the proof is these people actually trolled and weren't genuine. Same as I ask you why you would assume someone would troll about dead babies?

I do think it says so much more about those people that they would think someone was trolling about something like that. That your mind would even go there.

WomanStanleyWoman2 · 06/05/2022 09:17

’How could you even imagine such a thing?’ is the cry of the naïve, I’m afraid.

Not naive at all, rather it is naive to think something didn't happen because you personally cannot conceive of it. Maybe I'm just world-wise and experienced, seen too much in life. Those that are not only so cynical that they automatically assume a person is lying but simply can't understand something happening have led a very sheltered life in my experience.

WomanStanleyWoman2 · 06/05/2022 09:45

Not believing something has happened isn’t the same as not believing it’s possible. I agree that there are people on MN who seem to think that, just because they have no personal experience of a scenario, it doesn’t happen. What I’m saying is that it’s naïve to believe everything you read and never show any cynicism just because something could be true.

Many of us were here for the fallout of both of those pieces of shit.
We saw women we had got to know over the years sharing THEIR stories of losing their children only to then find out that these parasites had stolen photographs of REAL children in real hospitals to use on their threads.

Did you notice that one of the (thankfully few) troll defenders on this thread started a thread yesterday morning involving a dead child and a disabled child? Subsequently deleted.

Your support of people like this is interesting.

I didn't know about the photographs. Was it actually proven they weren't photos owned by the poster?

As I and others have said, threads are unfairly deleted all the time.

Do you honestly believe that just because something is deleted, that means it was 100% verifiably a troll?

You seem to have this notion that mods are infallible and if a thread was deleted, it deserved to be. That's what I mean by people like yourself are incredibly naive. Mods make mistakes all the time. Just because a thread was deleted, it doesn't mean it deserved to be nor that it was a troll. This site is basically like the Salem witch trials with everyone accusing each other of being a troll, reporting them and getting them deleted.

Newsflash, just because a thread was deleted it does not prove a single thing at all. You just assume it does.

BIWI · 06/05/2022 10:09

Perhaps you should apply for a job in the community team @TalkingCat seeing as your world knowledge and experience is obviously far superior to any of theirs?

Feckingfeck · 06/05/2022 10:29

Just had a thread of mine on DM,

Will it be deleted?

Is this now a claim to fame? 😳
