Mumsnet Talk re-platforming - Known issues update

JustineMumsnet · 21/04/2022 14:44

Hi all,
As you probably know we re-plaftormed the site overnight on Tuesday (in order to move to a faster, more stable and secure site which would be easier to develop new features on). There are a number of issues and bugs as a result of the move that we are working through and we thought it would be a good idea to list them on a page which we can keep updated as we sort through the problems. You can find that page here.

Mumsnet is a very large, complicated and old site - we've been working on re-platforming for the best part of 3 years - so it's not a huge surprise there are some bugs but please be assured we are working our way through them will get to them all as soon as we possibly can. In the meantime I do apologise for any inconvenience and frustration - I know it's been a painful day and a half for some.

Thank you to all those who've fed back and are helping us solve the remaining issues - it's really much appreciated Flowers.

On Android with Chrome and have a new problem...

When an image is posted by someone, it shows as being way off to the right of my screen (image 1)

When I drag it to the centre of my screen to be able to see it, a blank space apoears to the right of my screen (image 2)

When I then close the image and return to the thread, the text is tiny, off centre and stays like that (image 3) almost as if I've gone to a desktop view. I haven't. The only way to return to a normal sized, centred screen view is to refresh the page. So irritating.

I've numbered the images as in the order I posted them, but not sure if they will come up in the same order if that makes sense?

Threads 'I'm On' had started working again on a laptop/desktop but for the last couple of days I'm getting the error 500 page again.

EatSleepReplete · 22/05/2022 14:38

On Samsung Galaxy tablet, running Samsung Internet browser. The site is slow & laggy as hell, pages keep reloading, & certain specific threads appear like this:
The first image is zoomed out. The second is zoomed in so I can actually read the text. I only have full vision in one eye. This obviously causes me accessibility issues as I struggle to read it, & it doesn't scroll as easily. On the days I'm stuck on bed (quite often TBH) I rely on my tablet as I'm massively bored, when I'm not asleep. Recently I've been giving up on MN quite often & am more likely to use Reddit, which I hated when I first discovered it.
I don't generally have technical problems on other sites.

Apologies if someone else has already highlighted this particular problem, I also have reading issues due to my disability.

Still REALLY annoying that, when clicking on notifications, you get taken to the first page of the thread (rather than the last post that you’ve read)

It's frustrating and a big time-waster.

You would think this functionality would be kind of fundamental to a message forum.

Hi all,

Thanks for all your feedback - we are going through the new posts each day to investigate and log any new issues.

Some of the issues raised since Justine's last post are known issues that we are either currently fixing or planning to fix asap. Updates on known issues are here - https://www.mumsnet.com/articles/talk-updates

Here's a new update on some of the issues raised:

  • Search - we will release changes to search tomorrow that will include a better date filter. We’re also working on an advanced search that will allow you to search all posts in the same way as before
  • Images being too small - we're working on this at the moment and hope to release changes before the end of the week.
  • Notifications not taking you to the right place on thread - we need to do quite a bit of work on the notifications backend to get this sorted which is a pretty big job - so that will be a couple of weeks before it's sorted but is in progress
  • Black advert / rotate screen - we are working with our ad tech security partner to block this so hope to have a fix soon
  • Local talk not organised by date - we’re looking into this
  • Deleted threads not being labelled in threads I’m on - we’re working on a fix for this now along with the ability to remove threads from this list
  • Screen refreshing unexpectedly - this is an intermittent issue that is hard to track down and therefore hard to fix @Furries would you be open to doing a screen share call with us so we can investigate the issue?
  • @RosehipSyrupForDinner that is not expected behaviour - could you let me know what device (e.g. samsung s21) and browser (e.g. chrome) you are using so I can try to recreate the issue on my end?
Apologies if I haven't responded to your specific issue but I assure you we are taking all the feedback on board and logging all the issues that are raised.
BotCrossHuns · 23/05/2022 14:55

threads I'm on and I'm watching still not correct on the iphone app - they keep resetting and looking like new posts

print/numbers is still tiny on desktops (firefox on a mac) - not the posts themselves, but all the navigation buttons, the trending list, the threads im on etc., very hard to read

still tons of blank space at sides and top of screen and words just in a narrow central strip, so tons of scrolling (firefox on a mac) which is also bad for accessibility

blank threads at top of list

threads I'm on still has overlapping words whenever someone posts a list (as in this most recent from mumsnet)

still no names on thread lists showing the last poster

random black squares and error 500

Yes and if you unwatch them they come back a day or so later ha.

RosehipSyrupForDinner · 23/05/2022 19:40

Hi @KatyMumsnet it's a Samsung S10 and Chrome

U2HasTheEdge · 23/05/2022 22:07

Im not sure if this is being looked at or not. It's really annoying that if I refresh a page with a bookmark it doesn't take me to the bookmark. I know if we go on 'threads im watching' it works OK. I want to be able to leave a thread open, refresh the page and it take me to my last bookmarked post like it used to.

I’m totally open to doing a screen share call, but not sure how productive it will be. It’s totally random when it happens. Sometimes I think it’s the “ooh, post midnight gremlins”, then other times it happens during the day.

Am happy for you to PM me if that’s the best way to proceed.

Great, thanks. I just tried to search for posts by a particular poster (me actually!) and just couldn't work out how to do it now.

DragonwithoutaDungeon · 25/05/2022 03:15

@JustineMumsnet any update on the PM issue?

YetAnotherSpartacus · 25/05/2022 13:13

Also the small and sideways photos. Sybil cat just does not look her beautiful best sideways on.

I have gathered from a remarkably courteous email reply to my somewhat peevish comments that they are very much aware of the trouble with images being very small and coming out sideways, and they are working on it.

YetAnotherSpartacus · 25/05/2022 13:56

Excellent! :).

Idhatetolookintothoseeyes · 25/05/2022 18:46

screen refreshing unexpectedly

it drives me mad. I could be halfway through typing then suddenly everything vanishes then, waiting for it to reload looks like this. Half the time whatever I’ve been typing has vanished too!

YY to this. Drives me mad.

kitchens4ever · 25/05/2022 20:49

@JustineMumsnet The posters above state you are fully aware of the issues with the images being too small to be viewed but on the other post on site stuff you asked me to screen shot as MN didnt know what the problem was. Please can you clarify as I am not alone in having this problem. Thank you

AskingQuestionsAllTheTime · 25/05/2022 21:06

Sorry, I wasn't quite clear; the email that I had was from Lily, not Justine.

I don't suppose she will mind if I quote her, since it applies to everyone else quite as much as to me; she wrote that she was sorry they'd suggested the wrong fix for the problem to me, and then "- there's a wider issue with images that has yet to be fixed. We're aware that they are simply too small to make them functional and we're going to rectify this ASAP. Although we don't have a time scale yet, we're hoping that knowing this will help - as the issue will most certainly be temporary."

Perhaps they are aware, but screenshots might help? The reason I wrote to them is that I can't do screenshots but wanted to make it clear what the problem I am having is.

Idhatetolookintothoseeyes · 26/05/2022 17:37

and I’ve just had to scroll all the way to the end of this page to see if there are any updates because bookmark doesn’t ever work.

BotCrossHuns · 26/05/2022 18:49

the 'this page has expired; do you want to refresh the page' has come back again. But not consistently enough that I can do a screen video. Just random times when I press back.

Along with all the other problems I've reported that just seem to be ignored. the layout, the tiny font, the fact you can't read it properly, words overlapping.

And the iphone app constantly resetting threads I'm on/watched so everything looks new every day

DragonwithoutaDungeon · 26/05/2022 19:30

@KatyMumsnet any word on when we will get back the PM function? Effectively not able to communicate via PM for over a week and now I'm getting the "server is having a moment" message.

Bosky · 27/05/2022 04:29

It is not a solution to the image size problem but as a workaround I have resorted to posting images on imgbb.com/ and then linking to the image. There are other free, anonymous image-hosting sites of course.

NevermindNelson · 27/05/2022 09:28

The bookmarking problem is the biggest one for me. Instead of being able to pick up where I let off, I have to scroll to find the post I was reading, re-bookmark it and refresh the thread. I the last week, any refresh has seems to have taken me to a random post towards the top of the page.

Second biggest problem is the amount of time to refresh, it is markedly longer than any other site.

Not capitalising at the beginning of a paragraph is such basic formatting and it just looks cheap and clunky.

On the other hand, I have read more books in the last month.

Sometimes (on a desktop machine running Mozilla Firefox) right-clicking on the image and opening it in a new tab makes it appear in a larger version -- but we shouldn't need to fall back on workarounds. And it doesn't always work: sometimes they appear even smaller! (Eighteen rows of text in something the size of a postage stamp is definitely not better than eighteen rows of text in an image 5cm tall.)
