Mumsnet Talk re-platforming - Known issues update

JustineMumsnet · 21/04/2022 14:44

Hi all,
As you probably know we re-plaftormed the site overnight on Tuesday (in order to move to a faster, more stable and secure site which would be easier to develop new features on). There are a number of issues and bugs as a result of the move that we are working through and we thought it would be a good idea to list them on a page which we can keep updated as we sort through the problems. You can find that page here.

Mumsnet is a very large, complicated and old site - we've been working on re-platforming for the best part of 3 years - so it's not a huge surprise there are some bugs but please be assured we are working our way through them will get to them all as soon as we possibly can. In the meantime I do apologise for any inconvenience and frustration - I know it's been a painful day and a half for some.

Thank you to all those who've fed back and are helping us solve the remaining issues - it's really much appreciated Flowers.

I don't know what was the problem with the old set-up! Ok, maybe it looked "old-fashioned" but this new set-up doesn't look much different to me. The huge difference is that the old set-up worked fine, and this new set-up is simply crap! Problems which have been raised time and again since the change are still problems, and loads of good things have been lost and seemingly won't be coming back!

Did you pay for this shitstorm?

DragonwithoutaDungeon · 20/05/2022 23:17

@JustineMumsnet @JustineMumsnet I've got PM notifications, I think they might be actual PMs but I can't see them. I was waiting on replies from people. On desktop Chrome, laptop. Can't screenshot.

saraclara · 20/05/2022 23:40

The issues here are huge - they affect the very functionality of the site, on all platforms, and mean many users can't use it at all.

Except they're not affecting all of us. Seriously, apart from the search issue, I'm having NONE of the issues mentioned by other people using the exact same platforms (android and chrome, and laptop and chrome) that I am.

I really don't understand this at all. I'm not being smug, I'm not saying that other people are lying. I'm simply saying that the site is working for me, and I've has no issues at all since the first day. Which must point to something incredibly odd going on, and I can understand why the people who are running this place must be tearing their hair out. There's no rhyme or reason to some of this stuff.

Are you using the app or website?

The app (until the quote function issue), after the initial few days, has worked, bar certain problems which were there before.

The website design is different for every platform. Eg the brightness, the large ad spaces, the functionality of the mobile browser - you might not mind it, but it is different & the functionality has changed

There are then in addition a range of other problems which are platform-dependent and might not affect you.

I ended up clearing all cookies from my phone browser (Safari) this morning which does seem to have stopped the endless cookie acceptance messages.

You’re not seeing a page consisting mainly of empty grey space with a narrow text box limiting the view of the posts to about 3? Or the auto capital issue? Or have to scroll endlessly on your phone to see the posts? Confused

SirChenjins · 21/05/2022 09:25

The first point is what I see on my laptop using Chrome

EarringsandLipstick · 21/05/2022 09:32

I use the website.

If you use it on your phone, you can't not have noticed the changes.

On a laptop / desktop, I think the site broadly works, but with some annoyances, around ads, extra space, brightness, the issue with PMs, and others.

But huge numbers of users are more than inconvenienced by the upgrade. Poster after poster has described the accessibility issues which cannot have been missed to this extent, if they really did such thorough testing.

Last week the quote function & paragraph spacing stopped working on the app. For most of a week. That affected everyone who used the app, not only some, and made it unusable.

CambridgeLightBlue · 21/05/2022 10:16

Sorry if I missed this but what's going on with the local talk? Random order of old threads and I can't find a way to see anything recent.

VestofAbsurdity · 21/05/2022 12:57

When threads are deleted they used to show up in 'Threads I'm On' with the deletion message, that doesn't seem to be the case now, why not MNHQ?

Yes, I noticed that this morning. Seems a bit stupid for it to be by deliberate design.
I'd be pushing for a complete refund at the point, had I invested heavily in this redesign. But I suspect there really wasn't huge investment made, and it shows.

HellyR · 21/05/2022 13:36

Yes, deleted threads don't show up in "threads I'm watching" etc so no-one can see deletion messages (unless they have the url of the thread saved, presumably? )
Could this be fixed please otherwise we'll get endless "where did that thread go? " threads.

DragonwithoutaDungeon · 21/05/2022 21:20

@JustineMumsnet Please don't disappear for days at a time again, or at least have someone else from HQ take over if you do.

AnnieLou12 · 22/05/2022 00:07

Still having to consent to cookies on every page despite having cleared all cookies from my browser. So annoying!

AnnieLou12 · 22/05/2022 00:08

And the cookies consent pops up after posting too.

AnnieLou12 · 22/05/2022 00:18

Cookie consent pop up now gone so clearing cookies seems to have worked after all. Thought it hadn’t as had to log back in after clearing and it still kept appearing but suddenly now I can click on a new page without the pop up popping up!

Furries · 22/05/2022 01:03

Still REALLY annoying that, when clicking on notifications, you get taken to the first page of the thread (rather than the last post that you’ve read)

Furries · 22/05/2022 01:04

Am hating the way the screen constantly refreshes - shoving you back to the top of the page.

Furries · 22/05/2022 01:05

Am posting in sound bites as screen keeps refreshing and losing something lengthy that I’ve typed.

Furries · 22/05/2022 01:07

Still keep getting this black advert glitch cropping up. Totally random, no way of detailing what I do to make it happen.

Can’t remember what I clicked, but then got this following the black ad screen.

I’ve seen no mention of reinstating the “go to” box re pages. Please reinstate this. It’s really frustrating, especially given the fact that notification links aren’t working, to have to scroll/click through.

Furries · 22/05/2022 01:11

iPad, safari browser. Just in case anyone on the tech team is bothered to take note.

Stravaig · 22/05/2022 12:25

Notifications/navigation glitch:

When navigating from a thread back to the notifcations list I just came from, I use the back arrow on the browser, it starts to execute, but then bounces me back to the thread. Second attempt takes me all the way to the notifications list. So I'm having to back-page twice each time. Persistent since notifications reappeared. Oddest glitch I've ever come across!

(Safari, latest iOS, iPad mini)
