Mumsnet Talk re-platforming - Known issues update

JustineMumsnet · 21/04/2022 14:44

Hi all,
As you probably know we re-plaftormed the site overnight on Tuesday (in order to move to a faster, more stable and secure site which would be easier to develop new features on). There are a number of issues and bugs as a result of the move that we are working through and we thought it would be a good idea to list them on a page which we can keep updated as we sort through the problems. You can find that page here.

Mumsnet is a very large, complicated and old site - we've been working on re-platforming for the best part of 3 years - so it's not a huge surprise there are some bugs but please be assured we are working our way through them will get to them all as soon as we possibly can. In the meantime I do apologise for any inconvenience and frustration - I know it's been a painful day and a half for some.

Thank you to all those who've fed back and are helping us solve the remaining issues - it's really much appreciated Flowers.

Mumsnet seem to be updating and replying on other site stuff threads but not this one. Sorry, don’t know how to link but Mumsnet are on a thread called something like Isn’t it time you gave us an update. It’s currently at the top of the list of site stuff threads.

SueMumsnet · 17/05/2022 09:20

Hi all - really sorry about the remaining issues - a quick update

  • the formatting issues in the app (paragraph issues, posts being cut off) should now be fixed - you need to update the app to the latest version

  • bookmarks and refresh - this is a tricky one but we're looking at it and hope to come up with a solution

  • Pressing back not taking you back to Active - this is now fixed

  • Advanced Search and general Search issues - we're working on these - hopefully we should have something in next week or so

  • We seem to have an issue with Androids automatically logging people out - again we're looking at this issue

  • Pressing back on Trending taking you back to Active - again we're looking at this

  • PMs seem to not be working with Firefox - we're looking into this

Sorry for the frustration and thanks for reporting - we're working through as quickly as we possibly can. Thank you for patience.

Thanks for this update @SueMumsnet

any news on the minor but hugely irritating absence of auto capitalisation?

EspeciallyDistracted · 17/05/2022 11:47

Or the option to not have automatic paragraph numbers? I would prefer no autoformatting at all.

EarringsandLipstick · 17/05/2022 13:10

And again (about my 6th time posting about this, multiple threads, no answer) - can we have tags automatically bolded, please?

@SueMumsnet

I will look into that. Thanks.

@JustineMumsnet , @SueMumsnet , @KimMumsnet - what about the issues of the random listing of Last Hour threads, and the list updating every time we click back from a thread?

It used to be that the threads in Last Hour would be sorted according to topics, so it was easy to find the topics I wanted to see, and if I clicked onto a thread and read it, then clicked the back button to go back to the Last Hour threads list, I went back to the list, and it hadn’t updated in the few seconds I was away from it - now it updates in nano seconds, so if there are two threads I want to read, the second one disappears down the list whilst I’m looking at the first.

It makes the site very frustrating to use.

The refresh button on your browser, it usually looks like an arrow in a C shape. Or ctrl+R.

Or just hit the F5 key if you are using a PC.

EspeciallyDistracted · 17/05/2022 18:02

I didn't know MN had a refresh button in the first place

EspeciallyDistracted · 17/05/2022 19:35

Any update on the ability to show all posts in a thread via the dropdown menu without having to make it your default? It was really handy for searching for a keyword with the browser in a long thread. But I don't want my default to be show all posts.

hi @SirChenjins this is actually a surprisingly tricky one - annoyingly, the text editor we’re using doesn’t allow it. We may be able to put in place a fix to make it happen, we’re looking at it at the moment - will let you know.

Hi @EspeciallyDistracted This isn’t something we can do at the moment - it’s pretty hard going on the servers - but there may be a way we can bring it back in the future. Sorry that’s not a more helpful answer.

Thanks for this update. It’s a minor irritation amongst the more significant issues but an irritation nonetheless, especially as it was present on the previous version of MN.

I know you’re working flat out and are probably worn down by all the many complaints. I hope that whatever functionality you gained behind the scenes as a result of this move can be balanced out by much needed improvements to the user interface over the coming days and weeks.

cashorbanktransfer · 17/05/2022 22:27

Please can you update re the photos being too small to view. Thanks

Would it be opt-in? I hate autoformatting of any description (see above comment about the hugely annoying automatic paragraph numbering that has appeared)

Thanks for responding. I didn't realise how often I used it till it had gone.

crazy how an upgrade makes things hard on the servers. You’d think that tech moving on would make things easier.

I don’t understand how auto-cap for new paragraphs is so difficult to fix.

I don’t understand how clicking on photos still makes them look tiny.

I don’t understand how screenshot grabs are now pointless - impossible to read them.

I’m going to guess that a lot of long-time users are find8ng ways to fudge their way round the site to keep on top of topics they’re interested in. But that doing so is fairly painful.

Feedback/updates have been really poor. Only when pushed and not covering half of the complaints.

Obviously all the bug fixes are needed first, but at some point would be good to discuss how things look visually, on screen, across various devices.

and I’m going to highlight again the fact that a number of people have highlighted issues re accessibility. I’m not placed to comment, but I hope that HQ are engaging and updating with regards to this.

JaneJeffer · 18/05/2022 01:26

Why is this happening when I use search?

It’s just the function that automatically puts a capital letter at the start of a subsequent paragraph

like this - the l would automatically capitalise like it does on Word and just about every other platform I use.

IDidntKnowItWasAParty · 18/05/2022 09:42

Have not read this thread - but I just want to tell MN HQ that the new Talk site is absolutely dreadful. Why did you trade in a lovely working site, for one that is ugly, huge, too spaced out and most importantly, doesn't even work?! ARGH. How do I view a full thread now? ARGHHHH.

EspeciallyDistracted · 18/05/2022 10:15

@SirChenjins I switch these things off on my devices, Word etc, also predictive text etc. I'd rather do my own formatting or at least have the choice. I suppose if it is just auto-capitalisation for a new paragraph it's not too bad as I capitalise automatically anyway and it won't stop me doing that but I definitely don't want a creep in of auto-formatting unless you can opt out of it. The automatic paragraph numbering that has appeared is really annoying.

Any update on the nano-second fast updating of the Last Hour list, or the issue of it not being organised into topics, please, @JustineMumsnet?
