Mumsnet Talk re-platforming - Known issues update

Hi all,
As you probably know we re-plaftormed the site overnight on Tuesday (in order to move to a faster, more stable and secure site which would be easier to develop new features on). There are a number of issues and bugs as a result of the move that we are working through and we thought it would be a good idea to list them on a page which we can keep updated as we sort through the problems. You can find that page here.

Mumsnet is a very large, complicated and old site - we've been working on re-platforming for the best part of 3 years - so it's not a huge surprise there are some bugs but please be assured we are working our way through them will get to them all as soon as we possibly can. In the meantime I do apologise for any inconvenience and frustration - I know it's been a painful day and a half for some.

Thank you to all those who've fed back and are helping us solve the remaining issues - it's really much appreciated Flowers.

@JustineMumsnet when is the layout going to be sorted? For example, here's what I can see on this thread - 3 posts out of the 500 on here, lots of empty grey screen and a big advert. It's horrible. So. Much. Scrolling.

Yes, this. Whole screens of nothing at all.

Hi - the layout isn't that different from previously - only real differences are that the column doesn't stretch across the page as you scroll which was a change made largely for accessibility reasons (narrower columns of text are meant to be easier to read) and there's slightly more padding between posts. There are no more ads on the pages than there used to be. The grey box is to accommodate ads which are different shapes - not sure there's much to be done about that but I'll certainly check.

@JustineMumsnet , @SueMumsnet , @KimMumsnet - what about the issues of the random listing of Last Hour threads, and the list updating every time we click back from a thread?

It used to be that the threads in Last Hour would be sorted according to topics, so it was easy to find the topics I wanted to see, and if I clicked onto a thread and read it, then clicked the back button to go back to the Last Hour threads list, I went back to the list, and it hadn’t updated in the few seconds I was away from it - now it updates in nano seconds, so if there are two threads I want to read, the second one disappears down the list whilst I’m looking at the first.

It makes the site very frustrating to use.

Hi SDTG - we'll take a look at this

We think should be able to do something about the grey box so it's the same colour as the background colour (ie doesn't appear as a box). We'll get on this - thanks for the feedback.

Looks like the Pinned threads at the top of Active aren't showing for you - they are showing for us so I'm thinking it might be your particular set up - are you able to share the browser and device you're using?

If that’s for me I’m on a PC using Chrome.

re accessibility - is it really the case that narrow boxes of text are easier to read? Lots of posters have said the site isn’t meeting accessibility standards Confused

Still waiting for "yesterday" and "today" to be reinstated instead of dates

When will this be done @JustineMumsnet ? Smile

kitchens4ever · 18/05/2022 19:23

@JustineMumsnet please can we see the research that shows that the new format is more accessible as I strongly disagree. How many MN users with disabilities have said it is an improvement?

BotCrossHuns · 18/05/2022 19:27

accessibility is terrible!
The font is minuscule on al the navigation items, as well as the post titles in the trending box and in the threads `i'm on etc. Really hard to read.

the pictures are also so tiny as to be unusable - they're almost easier to see before you click on them! Surrounded by tons of white space, and you really can't see them at all when you click.

And the scrolling up and down constantly - so much blank space everywhere. This is not good for either those who have difficulty scrolling, but also visual issues - it was much better to be able to see larger areas of text at once.

So many people have said that this was a problem, from day 1, and much less accessible. Regardless of what your research says, it's better to listen to the experiences of people who are trying to use it, and who say that it's not accessible!! there have been several constant, consistent themes around that.

Also the basis for your claims that the new search function is "faster and returns more relevant information" than advanced search.
It's neither. It's monumentally shite.

And the scrolling up and down constantly

I am a total broken record on this subject now but bookmarks are almost worse than useless. It’s the hope that gets you. You bookmark……you hope….then they don’t work. And so you scroll….and scroll….and scroll some more.

Nothing but endless scrolling just to try and Find. Your. Damn. Place.

Oh, and the double posting, obviously 🙄

Um... loads of people have been saying the same. They can't all be wrong surely?

Stopped browsing the site with iPhone because it was awful.

ShirleyPhallus · 19/05/2022 07:31

Two issues really bad for me still:

  1. the site constantly refreshes - mostly when scrolling or even half way through writing a post so it gets lost
  2. the advanced search is so awful. It was going to be reinstated a few weeks ago and hasn’t
When will these be sorted?
WhenDovesFly · 19/05/2022 07:36

AAAAARRRGGGHHHH!!!

Mumsnet, please do something about the gigantic ad that keeps popping up across threads the past couple of days.

It obscures everything, covers the whole screen, and it’s impossible to scroll past it.

I’ve had to create this post in another app and copy and post it here, because every time I tried typing straight into the comments box the ad would pop up again and obliterate everything.

I’m on a desktop PC and using Chrome.

landoflostcontent · 19/05/2022 08:45

Came on here to say the same thing. Desktop using Microsoft Edge. Huge advert for some ferry company and despite instructions it is impossible to scroll down to read contents.

prh47bridge · 19/05/2022 09:12

The outstanding issues from my perspective using a Windows PC:

  • As others have said, the current search functionality is worse than useless. Yes, it is quick, but that doesn't help when it can't find things. For example, if you search for posts I have made mentioning the word "admission", it produces just two results. A similar search using the word "appeal" also produces just two results. Given that I have made thousands of posts mentioning these words, this is ridiculous. Many other searches using keywords from my past posts fail to produce any results at all. I currently have to use Google to find any of my past posts to which I want to refer.
  • Notifications are random. I seem to reliably receive notifications of posts tagging me. However, notifications of posts on threads I am watching regularly arrive days late if they arrive at all.
  • Clicking a notification takes me to the top of the thread rather than the post that triggered the notification.
  • There are five blank lines at the head of the list of threads in each forum. This means I always have to scroll down to see the threads.
  • I agree with others that being unable to easily switch between a paged view of a thread and viewing all posts is not user friendly. I would prefer to use a paged view, switching occasionally to viewing all posts as used to be possible. Now I have to make a semi-permanent choice.
  • The light grey colour used for the bullets on bullet points is invisible with most of the background colours that users can choose for highlighting their own posts and posts by the thread author. I am surprised it is taking this long to fix something that should be a simple stylesheet change.
IDidntKnowItWasAParty · 19/05/2022 09:35

The desktop version is not working for me this morning - links aren't clickable etc. Is it just me?

IDidntKnowItWasAParty · 19/05/2022 09:53

Refreshed, reloaded many times - working now

debwong · 19/05/2022 13:21

@prh47bridge Me too. I am a broken record on this issue now.
