Hello everyone.

After a bump in the road on last week’s attempt (sorry about that) we’re re-platforming Mumsnet Talk tonight. Because of this, the site will be down from midnight tonight (19/4) until 5am on Wednesday (20/4) morning.

For those of us resistant to change - don’t panic! The functionality of the site won’t change very much for now apart from some improvements to existing features like search and private messages. Our plan is to add more features/make updates once we are settled into the new platform.

However, there are a few things that you should be aware of before logging in tomorrow:

The first time you log on to Mumsnet post-replatforming you will need to remember your password. If you can’t (and let’s face it, few of us can) then you’ll need to reset your password. Sorry if that’s a pain - but it is the only secure way to do this.

You may need to update your browser. If you still view Mumsnet on an older browser you may experience compatibility problems with images, videos and links not working properly and you might not be able to post on a thread or fill in a form. To ensure you avoid these kinds of issues, we suggest you update your browser. Please click here for more information about re-platforming and how to update your browser.

And, not forgetting a massive thank you and unMumsnetty hugs to everyone who helped us test the new platform. You’re all stars. Star

If you’ve got any questions or comments, please add them to this thread.

Thank you.

I had a message typed; I went to the next page to check I wasn't just repeating what had already been said. I wasn't, so I went back again to the page under which I had typed my message. It was no longer there.

Definite disimprovement there.

peachgreen · 20/04/2022 11:29

Swimming against the tide here, but I like it! I agree an accessibility assessment would be a good idea though as some of the issues people are raising around that seem pretty fundamental.

Sending unmumsnetty hugs to the team - it can be pretty disheartening to work on something for a long time and then have it ripped to shreds by a sea of "experts" (and yes, I'm including myself in those quotation marks)...!

This.
It's bloody horrible. Done on the cheap as per.

Also, just tried to change my settings, but as I can't scroll down with the side bar and my arrows also don't work on that page, my settings remain all white 😑

AskingQuestionsAllTheTime · 20/04/2022 11:31

Also, I read in oldest-first order, since that's the order I read all text: start at the top and go down. This thread reverted to newest-first when I posted to it instead of putting my post at the end of oldest-first order; presumbly I am now never to read more than one page at a time.

PuppyMonkey · 20/04/2022 11:32

If anyone is interested, I’ve worked out how to see the MN emojis. You press the face (next to the @ button). Then the m mumsnet logo does come up and you press that and the MN emojis come up.

it’s so intuitive. Grin

But why wasn't all this done at the testing stage?

One or two minor glitches is normal but you've had so many basic things going wrong all morning. This is supposed to be a professionally run website, not something that feels like it's hosted by a teenager in a basement somewhere!

I can't even begin to tell you how much testing was done before we released. Hundreds and hundreds of users tested it exhaustively for us. When a website's been around for 22 years there are so many layers of complexity to work through. I know the problems are annoying, but we're v grateful for all the posts and we'll get as many of them as possible sorted asap. Thanks.

I appreciate your reply but honestly this seems really poor for such a high-traffic website with millions of users.

You can't have tested it very thoroughly if you were having such basic glitches as the quote function not working and colour changes not saving properly.

NoWordForFluffy · 20/04/2022 11:36

When you start a new line of text, it doesn't capitalise the first letter. It's really annoying.

Also (had to capitalise the A myself), I keep getting logged out.

I'm sure someone has mentioned this, but notifications are dumping you at the start of a thread. So you have to then scroll through however many posts to find the new comments or mentions.

This seems so stupid.

@beastlyslumber , you can get to a specific message - click on the arrow that looks like this > on the right of the message.

Now to scroll down to find Post. I always Ctrl + Enter so this is going to take time to get used to.

Thank you. I rarely use these but it is good to know that I could.

I note that the useful explanations for new users are no longer there, so the special mumsnet ones will be meaningless within a couple of days. Pity.

Keep having to accept cookies EVERY time I move page?? Why?? Have chosen and saved preferences.
This is driving me mad. VERY off-putting.

Who from those hundreds of people testing it thought these multiple lines was a good idea?? Name and shame! (no, obviously don't) (actually, yes do)

I have been here for less than an hour today and there are at least three things which I have found to be unhelpful for an ordinary user with very few demands (ie me). I hate to think how many I might have located if I'd had a week to play with it and that's not specialised things, just ordinary ones like "where have all but ten of my ''I'm watching' threads gone?" and "why is a thread I did not start and which has in any case been deleted -- listed in my 'I started', but not ones that I know I did start and I will now never see again?"

AskingQuestionsAllTheTime · 20/04/2022 11:45

And I am fairly sure I did not press anything to cause some of my post there to be crossed out.

NoWordForFluffy · 20/04/2022 11:46

Why is it telling me I have 3 PMs? I don't, only old ones. And the notification won't go away! 🤔

I can't access all the emojis either!

prettybird · 20/04/2022 11:50

I can't find where/how to do an Advanced Search on my laptop Confused. It's one of the few reasons I ever go on to the desktop site. I do most of the rest of my MNing on the app.

Which text to speech was used in the testing phase? Can you let me know so I can see if that is any better, as after all MN wouldn’t approve a new platform that excludes the use of them.

Headachiest · 20/04/2022 11:52

HellyR · 20/04/2022 09:09

I would want it to take you to that particular post if possible, not the start of the thread.
I think I can get used to clicking the little arrow tbh.

I think having to move to the little arrow is really un-user-friendly. I would like to be able to click on the post preview and be taken directly to that post. Much more 'surface area' for the cursor tone able to find, compared to the little arrow!

TO BE able to find!

Yes the lines are very confusing and difficult to look at. I have lost the plot on who is answering whom.Confused

What was wrong with individual message boxes with the poster's name at the top?

Just looking at the posts quoting this one is a mess

I agree with another poster it’s an accessibility issue not just glitches

It’s difficult to use and harder to read

567and · 20/04/2022 11:59

On my iPhone, latest OS, the changes are annoying, but I can live with them. However, I've just logged in on my kindle fire tablet and, oh my poor eyes. There is just so much STUFF on the page. So much dedicated to advertising, it's just hard to read the actual threads with all of the other distracting stuff aground it.

The font also jumps to a bigger size about 10 seconds after I've clicked on a thread. Honestly, I know it's a work in progress, but at the minute I just can't use the site on my tablet.

Sorry, I don't get this! It used to be (yesterday) that my notifications would say, e.g. 32 people have commented on... I would click the notification and it would take me to those 32 new comments.

Now the notification says the same thing, but when I click on it, it takes me to the start of the thread. So I then have to guess which page the new comments start on, and scroll up or down to find them.

HellyR · 20/04/2022 12:04

I'm not liking the narrow size of the desktop site I'm afraid.
The 'Premium' ad banner at the top also takes up loads of real estate.
Also as mentioned on another thread, I've lost about 50 'threads I'm watching'. Is there any way they can be reinstated?
