Hello everyone.

After a bump in the road on last week’s attempt (sorry about that) we’re re-platforming Mumsnet Talk tonight. Because of this, the site will be down from midnight tonight (19/4) until 5am on Wednesday (20/4) morning.

For those of us resistant to change - don’t panic! The functionality of the site won’t change very much for now apart from some improvements to existing features like search and private messages. Our plan is to add more features/make updates once we are settled into the new platform.

However, there are a few things that you should be aware of before logging in tomorrow:

The first time you log on to Mumsnet post-replatforming you will need to remember your password. If you can’t (and let’s face it, few of us can) then you’ll need to reset your password. Sorry if that’s a pain - but it is the only secure way to do this.

You may need to update your browser. If you still view Mumsnet on an older browser you may experience compatibility problems with images, videos and links not working properly and you might not be able to post on a thread or fill in a form. To ensure you avoid these kinds of issues, we suggest you update your browser. Please click here for more information about re-platforming and how to update your browser.

And, not forgetting a massive thank you and unMumsnetty hugs to everyone who helped us test the new platform. You’re all stars. Star

If you’ve got any questions or comments, please add them to this thread.

Thank you.

Ah dammit I take it back. You can quote a quoted post but it's a bloody mess. There's no clear way of seeing who posted which part. 🤦🏼‍♀️

This is absolutely awful, if anything makes me stop using the site it will be this, who on earth thought this mess was a good idea?

Fulmine · 20/04/2022 10:55

Posting times are showing correctly for me.

SpinningMeSoftly · 20/04/2022 10:57

All going swimmingly, then?

Aquamarine1029 · 20/04/2022 11:00

Who's the genius who thought change would be good? 🙁

airrrrAIRRRRiELLLL · 20/04/2022 11:00

Just checking I can post as app won’t let me.

SueMumsnet · 20/04/2022 11:01

Hi all - just wanted to post to say thanks v much - all of your posts are really helpful - we're reading every single one of them and this is very much a work in progress. We've fixed a few issues already and are continuing to do so.

airrrrAIRRRRiELLLL · 20/04/2022 11:01

👍

It is tiring and difficult for people with visual issues to have to scroll and move their eyes so much to read anything - there is so much space at the sides

I don't understand this one. If the print spread into the space at the sides, I would find that tiring because I'd keep having to turn my head to read it?

No, on a desktop monitor you can see a much larger space horizontally at once, without having to turn your head, as you're sitting further back. Having a 12cm column in the middle that is widely space vertically, means loads of scrolling. I'm not saying it needs to go right to the furthest edges horizontally, but normal sites do use the majority of the full width - maybe a 6cm gap each side, for example.

And it's the fact it's like that, combined with the huge extra vertical space, that means you can see very little with a single glance.

FawnDrench · 20/04/2022 11:06

The bookmark function is not functioning at all now - very annoying having to scroll through lots of posts or flip the thread every time.
(I'm on iPhone app)

Please sort this out.

JurasicPerks · 20/04/2022 11:06

A couple more things:
Searching by date is horrible. That slidey bar either needs to re-set once you have shrunk it to recent times, or go back to letting us put dates in. I've yet to work out how to search by topic.

Photos are horrible. Hard to close - the X has been off the top of the screen a couple of times. Also, the mini images below make the actual photo very small, and if you arrow forward and backwards through them, the quality of the second and subsequent photo is horrid (fine if open directly)

SirChenjins · 20/04/2022 11:06

Can't we just go back to the legacy version until you sort all these major glitches and issues and problems out @YetAnotherBeckyMumsnet ?

This dog's dinner just should not have happened - you have the necessary resourcing, finance and expertise to test properly.

JurasicPerks · 20/04/2022 11:08

Oh, yes. A minor one, but I can vote YANBU/YABU on a thread I've already voted on. Not sure if it's just pre and post change, or if I'll be able to do it again on new votes....

Elphame · 20/04/2022 11:10

I can't turn off that AIBU voting feature - I have under customise but it still shows. Takes up half the screen too.

It keeps telling me I have unread PMs when I don't.

So much wasted space everywhere and the colour changes are too subtle. Where space would actually enhance usability though it's been cut to the minimum.

I was head moderator on a site which also "upgraded" like this a few years ago. The members (including me) hated it. It was full of glitches like we're finding here now and the entire forum with 1000s of active members only lasted a few more months as people voted with their feet.

LivingDeadGirlUK · 20/04/2022 11:11

EveSix · 20/04/2022 07:53

I pay for Premium to opt out of advertising. Can this extend to the big blank grey box at the top of my screen which says 'Advertisement', please. It comprises about one fifth of my visible screen, so please remove.

Again MN this is a pain for people who need the text larger, you should be able to zoom in without the frames doing this. I've had to zoom out slightly to avoid it and now I'm leaning into my monitor, not great for posture.

IcedOatLatte · 20/04/2022 11:11

Another thing - didn't the post count on TIO used to be the number of posts since you last posted? It looks like the total number now. I found that useful to know whether I needed to click on the thread of if I could see them all on the TIO screen

SunshineCake · 20/04/2022 11:12

Every time I do anything I have to reject the interest thing. Still can't access my PMs

Yes, can we just go back to the version that worked while you sort out this stuff?

beastlyslumber · 20/04/2022 11:17

I'm sure someone has mentioned this, but notifications are dumping you at the start of a thread. So you have to then scroll through however many posts to find the new comments or mentions.

This seems so stupid.

@Fulmine

Nope, still an hour behind for me!

BotCrossHuns · 20/04/2022 10:16

yes it's terrible if you have any visual difficulties.

I can't believe this wasn't tested properly. You don't get this many issues if you test on a wide variety of people. browsers, and devices. You get tiny glitches. These are major, major issues, particularly for accessibility.

Screen space is a huge issue. It is tiring and difficult for people with visual issues to have to scroll and move their eyes so much to read anything - there is so much space at the sides (just measured - 9cm blank on one side, 16cm blank on the right), loads of space extra at the top with a huge mumsnet ad and then 10 blank lines before post titles start. Spacing within posts has increase to more like 1.5 spacing, so it requires constant scrolling and moving your eyes and you can't take anything in in a quick glance.

At the same time, photos are minuscule, as is the font used for all the directions, instructions, navigation, labels etc. It means you can't enlarge things with your browser either - not that most people should need to do that on a site like this anyway!

You can't see the thread titles change colour when you've read them, which again for people with visual issues was a huge help.

You can't easily get the same number of posts on a page as before, or jump to the last one etc, and again, navigation in this way may it easier for users who find it harder to see and read the normal print to use. It helps to be able to see things in one place and not have to keep scrolling, but have a decent size font at the same time. Constnatly clicking and scrolling to try to get to the page you want make is all harder.

Of course there are the regular glitches, threads I'm on not updating on the app, not being able to use the arrows to get to the posts, not being able to see what the posts are about easily, but those are more minor - when you really change how possible it is for people to read and use your site, that actually changes whether we can stay members or not.

It is not just reacting to change. Of course people complain when there are changes and don't like them. This is much bigger than that. It seriously looks like it hasn't been tested on a wide variety and age of browsers, with people who use the site differently, with different settings etc. It needs thousands of hours of testing with different set-ups, and it looks like that didn't happen.

Excellent post. I agree. These are not just minor glitches but big problems and accessibility issues.

tapdancingmum · 20/04/2022 11:23

The app seems to be working better so I can see more than 5 posts before they are repeated but I've lost all my bookmarks. I don't always watch a thread I've bookmarked but when I come across it again I like to carry on where I left off but now can't.

VenusStarr · 20/04/2022 11:24

I can't tag more than one person in a post. I'm on a long running miscarriage support thread that I finally managed to access and when I tried to tag more than one person, I got a black error message pop up and then couldn't finish what I was saying as it just kept flashing OOPS. Turns out it had posted anyway, half written.

I can't use Mumsnet at all on my phone via chrome now - I just get a 400 bad request error. I'm on my laptop but can't use the scroll down bar on the side.

SpinningMeSoftly · 20/04/2022 11:26

I agree that the accessibility issues are much more that a 'glitch'. I've now spent a couple of hours trying to get MN to work for me on my trusty laptop, playing with zoom / font size etc from my end; and it's still bloody awful to use.

It's such a shame. I really want to like it and see the positives; but it's so hard to read and use.

But why wasn't all this done at the testing stage?

One or two minor glitches is normal but you've had so many basic things going wrong all morning. This is supposed to be a professionally run website, not something that feels like it's hosted by a teenager in a basement somewhere!

I posted this a couple of minutes ago and it shows it being posted at 10:30. Also, it has let me bookmark a post but hasn't kept it.
