@ChardonnaysPetDragon

This is mad.

I spent the whole day actively avoiding the "WTF just came out of my bum" thread, but I have a suspicion it wasn't the most batshit one thread today.

I posted a separate thread about this. How the hell can we block/hide threads from 'TRENDING' when we have hidden them? I am sick of (SOME) Ukraine and Russia threads, and also sick of seeing that repugnant 'WTF came out of my arse' thread? THAT has been trending for NINE HOURS now since it was posted. WHY? 100s of other threads have been popular across the boards today. Why is THIS one still stuck on 'trending?'
Sparklingbrook · 25/02/2022 20:48

@BearOfEasttown IIRC 'trending' is a result of clicks rather than comments. I reckon the title having 'arse' in it is making people want to have at least a look, along with wanting to know whether it was a grand piano or something...

🤣

I see the point. But this thread has been trending for TEN hours now, despite 100s of other threads being popular today. I have asked Lily from Mumsnet to take it off 'trending' because the title is minging, it has been there TEN HOURS (all day!) and 4 or 5 other now have complained about it, and its distasteful title.

BearOfEasttown · 25/02/2022 20:53

4 or 5 others! (not other.)

ChaoticWoman · 25/02/2022 20:59

I'm very anxious about the whole situation, I've not slept well because of worrying about how bad it's likely to get, saying that though, I absolutely no way should this topic be hidden away because it's so important.

I can't expect very important news events be hidden away because it makes me anxious. I do not want to stick my head in the sand and pretend it won't impact my day too day life at some point but if my mental health is at a point where I couldn't cope with people discussing it I take a break from all social media until I feel better, including MN because it's absolutely everywhere at the moment and you can't expect the discussion to be hidden away when it's very easy to not open threads or hide them.

It's a scary thing to have to talk about, but people who do need to talk about it shouldn't be told to hide away either.

BIWI · 25/02/2022 21:02

FFS. Having a separate topic for it isn't hiding it away!

It just means that it has its own topic.

Sparklingbrook · 25/02/2022 21:02

absolutely no way should this topic be hidden away because it's so important

it wouldn't be 'hidden away' though. it would have it's very own important topic where everyone could go and discuss it should they wish. The Covid topic was, up until recently the busiest on the board after AIBU I think. You can't say that was 'hidden away'.

Chitchatchatter · 25/02/2022 21:05

@Juno22

I will be furious MN if you do this just to pacify one person who seems unwilling to hide threads they are not interested in.
So would I. These events have serious implications for us all. If you don't want to engage - and that's just fine - just hide the thread.
merrymouse · 25/02/2022 21:06

Again, much more difficult to find a thread on a particular subject if it disappears out of active convos/keeps getting pushed down the list by completely unrelated threads.

cakeorwine · 25/02/2022 21:06

I wonder how many people don't know what's being discussed about Covid because it's a separate topic - so they can't find it easily.

It's like going to a library and instead of seeing the popular books on view (in AIBU and Chat) and learning something and contributing, you have to go to some obscure place at the back and know that you were looking for that topic.

Or, those who don't want to engage (no judgement from me about that) can just hide the thread.
Sparklingbrook · 25/02/2022 21:07

It isn't just one person asking for this. It's been explained by many on this thread why it's a good idea. Maybe prepare to be furious.

Associatepeggy · 25/02/2022 21:07

How does it having its own topic stop that.

At let's be honest 95% of these threads aren't a sensible or informative discussions.

User7497521 · 25/02/2022 21:07

Surely it's best to have its own topic so you don't miss the less dramatic threads that will linger longer on there than aibu

merrymouse · 25/02/2022 21:08

Engagement shouldn’t depend on a thread’s position in active convos. If there is a topic there won’t be constant thread duplication.

Sparklingbrook · 25/02/2022 21:08

Better if a whole Topic could be hidden then nobody has to see the daft/alarming thread titles if they don't want to.

It's also been explained by many why it's a bad idea.

Just like hiding Brexit threads away. People who don't actively go and find them are missing out on some of the really important bits of information.

I guess Chat and AIBU should just be for inane crap about parking threads.

ThrowawayALotta · 25/02/2022 21:09

Just adding my two cents to say this really doesn't need a separate board. If mumsnet segregates every world event then where does it end? The talk topic list would be hundreds of pages long with far too many separate sections for each individual conflict and geographic area of politics, it would just go on forever.

Utterly ridiculous idea thought up by snowflakes who can't tolerate other people having different interests than their own.

Because people won't know the topic exists if they aren't looking for topics and don't search by active.

This would be true if the covid board wasn’t so active and popular!

merrymouse · 25/02/2022 21:10

I wonder how many people don't know what's being discussed about Covid because it's a separate topic - so they can't find it easily.

If they are relying on threads in AIBU on Mumsnet to find out about Covid, they really need better information sources.

User7497521 · 25/02/2022 21:11

I don't think that anyone will be rushing here for serious discussion on it anyway, it's probably a laughing stock

cakeorwine · 25/02/2022 21:12

It's active with people who know it exists and post on it.

I wonder how many people don't know it exists and have wondered where the Covid posts are?

merrymouse · 25/02/2022 21:12

Maybe it wouldn't occur to people that Mumsnet would decide to create a separate War topic to discuss the invasion by Russia.

What would they call it anyway?

Ukraine invasion?
Eastern European conflict
NATO vs Russia
WW3

I can imagine people on here during the start of WW2 burying their heads in the sand.
