any chance of a covid style war topic for all the "are we going to war " threads please.

OP posts:
StarsAndSugarlumps · 25/02/2022 19:16

@LilyMumsnet How’s the thinking going at @MNHQ on this?

(On the plus side, I am getting loads more done IRL while I am avoiding MN)

cakeorwine · 25/02/2022 19:17

It seems to have calmed down now.

Yeah, for 5 minutes! The fruit-loopers will be back!

If MN don't do something about it, I may have to have a sabbatical from mumsnet for a few days. I am sick to death of seeing so many nonsensical threads now. As I said, perfectly sane, decent, level-headed, measured threads about Ukraine and Russia are fine, but 4 out of 5 on AIBU and CHAT are batshit.

Juno22 · 25/02/2022 19:35

Yesterday I was against a separate topic. I've changed my mind. The utterly idiotic posts, some of which are frankly insulting towards the people really suffering in Ukraine, are just ridiculous.

Sparklingbrook · 25/02/2022 19:36

I have just read the whole 'Is the UK in Danger from Russia?' thread. It is both Confused and Hmm in equal measures.

Associatepeggy · 25/02/2022 19:39

I really don't understand the claim it will be hidden away. The covid topic didn't hide away the covid threads.

It did, however, stop other boards become over run by it.

I think there should be one. Just like civid and brexit.

And so much of what's written on them is total bollocks and would be funny, if there's wasn't a good chance someone may read it and believe it.

Good to hear you're onside now Juno22. Some threads are bonkers batshit to the extreme. These are the same weirdos who posted stupid goady scaremongering covid threads (before the coronavirus board was opened.)

I know right!
VioletCharlotte · 25/02/2022 19:43

I would really like to see all war related threads moved to a separate topic. So many people are feeling incredibly anxious about the situation and this constant speculation isn't healthy. It feels like how it was at the beginning of the pandemic. I know I can ignore the threads but would prefer to have the option of hiding the whole topic.

BearOfEasttown · 25/02/2022 19:45

Several posters getting so angry now on the 'shall I play Ukrainian music to show solidarity to Ukraine' thread? Grin

'Some of you really are VILE, horrible people' said three posters in the last few minutes! 'All the OP is doing is showing solidarity.'

Fuck me! You couldn't make this shit up! 🤣 There's some batshit fruitloops on the AIBU right now. I can't cope. I may have to switch mumsnet off for the night! 🤣

Smokeahontas · 25/02/2022 19:46

I agree with @BearOfEasttown and @TeenPlusCat.

Some of the threads have been peculiar.

I gave up on MN in 2020 when the avalanche of batshit Covid threads started, I think I left it about 3 months before daring to venture back in.

Good point.

A separate topic won't stop the batshittery though.

Sparklingbrook · 25/02/2022 19:52

No sadly. But at least it will be all in one place. Grin

I think I'm gonna have to take a break for a few days. I can't stand it. AIBU is my fave board, and it's being bogged down with Ukraine/Russia threads.
mumofEandE · 25/02/2022 20:07

Yes please - a separate War thread - not because I want to bury my head in the sand etc but I want to avoid all the panicked MNers who think Putin's going to be in their neck of the woods by next Tuesday.

merrymouse · 25/02/2022 20:11

If I want to discuss or find information on a particular issue it’s much easier to find a thread in a specific topic. If it’s in AIBU or chat I will only see it if it’s in active convos.

(This is probably one of the reasons why there are so many duplicate threads.)

I don’t agree that moving threads to a topic is hiding them away. It’s not as though Mumsnet is or should be the best place to find out news in Ukraine. MN has hosted intelligent and well informed long running threads on politics and current affairs, but we are all unverified anonymous posters. A random thread that pops up in AIBU should not be anyone’s first source of information.

I know right. Like THIS one for example. (And there are many more!)

Creeeper · 25/02/2022 20:26

I agree with the OP, there should be a separate section

I’m all for discussing it but am pretty fed up with all the repetition of threads, particularly those that ask if we should start prepping etc

BearOfEasttown · 25/02/2022 20:32

SO many threads on Ukraine and Russia are on 'trending topics' now. Stuck at the side with no way to remove them/make them go away.

ANOTHER one.

I am done for tonight. I'm switching mumsnet off for the night.

HenceThus · 25/02/2022 20:33

I understand the reasoning for a designated topic but hopefully this will all be over soon? Just pause and think, you are asking for a war board, it sounds rather glum, doesn't it?

ChardonnaysPetDragon · 25/02/2022 20:36

This is mad.

I spent the whole day actively avoiding the "WTF just came out of my bum" thread, but I have a suspicion it wasn't the most batshit one thread today.

I don't think in 2020 anyone thought that the shiny new Coronavirus topic would still be a hive of activity two years later.

I've been avoiding it too, but might just give it a read.
