any chance of a covid style war topic for all the "are we going to war " threads please.

OP posts:
merrymouse · 25/02/2022 21:14

The amount of thread duplication implies that people haven’t noticed existing threads on Ukraine in AIBU.

cakeorwine · 25/02/2022 21:16

There's loads of threads about the energy situation at the moment.

Why haven't people called for a topic on that?

We have a cost of living crisis.

Maybe that calls for its own topic?

Creeeper · 25/02/2022 21:16

@cakeorwine

This would be true if the covid board wasn’t so active and popular

It's active with people who know it exists and post on it.

I wonder how many people don't know it exists and have wondered where the Covid posts are?

  1. They start a new thread and then someone reports it and it gets moved over
  2. They find the thread from active convos
  3. They use the search function
Sparklingbrook · 25/02/2022 21:17

@User7497521

I don't think that anyone will be rushing here for serious discussion on it anyway, it's probably a laughing stock
That is very true.
Associatepeggy · 25/02/2022 21:17

Because people won't know the topic exists if they aren't looking for topics and don't search by active.

You can see covid posts in active. People found that board. That didn't exist 25 months ago, then it was created and people used it.

The same will happen with separate topic for this.

If you think there should be, start a thread on it and ask mnhq.
merrymouse · 25/02/2022 21:19

The topic could just be called Ukraine.

With the best will in the world mumsnet is not currently a good place to find out information on Ukraine, and multiple random threads in AIBU are not helping that.

CecilyTheWake · 25/02/2022 21:19

What’s the point of creating yet another fucking topic to add to the dozens which are already in existence when people post everything in AIBU ‘for traffic’ and MNHQ refuse to move threads into the relevant topics?

If they create another one now, in a few weeks it’ll be tumbleweed like all the others. Then in 10 years time, MNHQ will post on it asking if it’s ok to streamline it with chat or whatever, about 6 posters will scream and shout demanding that they MUST have a thread solely about the Russia-Ukraine war and then it will be tumbleweed for another 10 years.

Sparklingbrook · 25/02/2022 21:19

They will know the topic exists when a thread appears in Active and they click on it.
Or when they start a thread and it gets moved over.

ClingClingDin · 25/02/2022 21:19

This thread is more annoying than the weird threads. Hiding.

Exactly. Unless, of course, MNers feel the need to Alexa some Ukrainian music to feel solidarity.

Great.
cakeorwine · 25/02/2022 21:20

Honestly - having looked at Active, there aren't many threads on this.

I guess this thread in itself is a self fullfilling prophecy because people who want a war topic have come to see if there is a thread on it and have posted on it to ask for one.

What you haven't seen is the other people on MN who don't want a war topic. Because they wouldn't think to come to Site stuff to see if there is a thread about a war topic.

Just like when people complain about the BBC to OFCOM. You only hear from the people who have complained. Not the many who haven't complained.

merrymouse · 25/02/2022 21:21

And yes, if people are posting the threads will show up in active.

cakeorwine · 25/02/2022 21:22

If you think there should be, start a thread on it and ask mnhq

I don't

Because I think people who see threads on AIBU about the energy crisis will read them and hopefully be more informed. Instead of going to a specific topic.

Sparklingbrook · 25/02/2022 21:23

Time will tell if MNHQ want a topic I suppose. Until then it's War in AIBU.

Associatepeggy · 25/02/2022 21:24

So what's your point? Just because someone has started a thread asking for this on this topic, doesn't mean they have to for everything.

@cakeorwine I can see 5. Including the euro vision one.

There's one at the moment assuming that because BAs website is down, it must be Russian hackers. Now someone is claiming that planes just might fall out of the sky. Couldn't possibly be that BA are just shit and it happens fairly often.

People who dont use MN are not going to come here for information on Russia or Ukraine.

I would guess a lot of the posters making shit up now were also the hysterical ones in 2020 telling people it was against "the rules" to buy easter eggs and hair dye.

I'm kind of putting it down to it being the most "exciting" thing these posters have ever lived through. Like my SIL, who is busy "no war!"-ing on FB.

This is a woman who prior to this week couldn't have found Ukraine on a map showing only Ukraine with a big arrow pointing saying "this is Ukraine".

Or they're very young and didn't watch any of the nuclear war films at school. Someone asked if a nuclear bomb was dropped on London would it have any effect on Watford.

Social media will provide an interesting social study one day that's fo' sho'. Like Covid, the people telling other people off for being hysterical tend to be acting the most hysterically, the people who know less than nothing become experts and the people sitting in privilege at home take to Twitter to condemn the schedule interruption to show footage of Ukrainian children doing homework at railway stations as they try to flee, which mean Corrie starts half an hour later. Confused

Reminds me of the cinemas don’t have films beyond Thursday lockdown is coming for sure - cis they’d know ;

Re topic being separate I’m more ok with it if it has a calmer name like ‘Ukraine’ as give it the war title and it will go nuttier.

Agree, there is no need for a general ‘war’ topic.

User7497521 · 26/02/2022 08:33

It could be put in 'other stuff' with aibu. Brexit and preppers are in there, it could have a prime position as it is current like Brexit originally had, called Ukraine

merrymouse · 26/02/2022 08:39

Maybe it wouldn't occur to people that Mumsnet would decide to create a separate War topic to discuss the invasion by Russia.

If people haven’t hidden the board they will be able to see the thread in active convos.

If the thread isn’t active they aren’t more likely to find it because it is on page 2 of AIBU with an obscure title.

Howmanysleepsnow · 26/02/2022 08:45

I’d like a separate war topic. Sometimes I use mumsnet to help take my mind off things. At the moment half the threads in active are war related. I could hide them, but more would spring up in that time. I’ll be honest- it’s affecting my mental health (on top of other stuff I have going on).
I’m not trying to bury my head in the sand, but I’d prefer to keep up with current events when I feel able, rather than be bombarded at every turn. For instance, I prefer not to have the potential nuclear war in my head when going to bed as I know it’ll trigger insomnia/ nightmares. A quick read through at times of my choosing is manageable.
