any chance of a covid style war topic for all the "are we going to war " threads please.

OP posts:
merrymouse · 01/03/2022 17:13

while simultaneously insisting that it shouldn't make any difference where people post and a topic board should be perfectly adequate

Because you can always see current posts, and sometimes people want to be diverted by a pointless thread on loo brushes.

Ncwinc · 01/03/2022 17:18

There’s a difference between the discussion of what going on in Ukraine and the ‘We’re all going to die!!!!!!!’ threads.

I don’t think what’s happening should be hidden away. I do think that the threads that are basically a written panic attack should be deleted.

CecilyTheWake · 01/03/2022 17:56

FGS, no one is suggesting ‘hiding away’ anything, merely making proper use of the numerous existing topics so AIBU isn’t completely overrun with non-AIBU threads.

If people used the correct bloody topics more and MN had guidelines and a policy to move threads then the function of being able to hide topics would actually work effectively.

I hide the Covid topic because I was sick of seeing shouty panic-mongering threads dominating Active. I feel the same about all the ‘omg am I gonna diiiiiiieeeeee!’ threads now.

C8H10N4O2 · 01/03/2022 18:21

@merrymouse

I know that. How is this different from banning/censoring certain topics from the miscellaneous boards?

Because current threads still appear in active convos and older threads (i.e. more than a day old) can be easily browsed in the topic.

You talking about banning certain subjects from the miscellaneous topics. However you present it you are changing the way AIBU and Chat work and at the very least than needs clear guidelines for people to follow.

We also, on this thread, have people wanting these threads removed from active convos/trending. ie wanting it hidden completely so that unless you know there is discussion somewhere on the site you won't see it at all.

Its a site for adults, people need to take atleast some responsibility for what they choose to read. AIBU/Chat has many subjects which individuals find triggering so it makes far more sense to hide those topics if you find some subjects triggering.

Making it easier for individual members to hide threads makes perfect sense, restricting new posters from starting threads for a period of time may also help. Making it clear that some subjects are banned from miscellaneous topics is essential if that is what happens.

However wanting mechanisms to classify threads so that people don't see them at all is frankly ridiculous.

C8H10N4O2 · 01/03/2022 18:23

You talking

Agh - "you're talking" - sorry!

Absolutely this.
AlexaShutUp · 01/03/2022 18:33

Yes, I would support stricter moderation of some of the scaremongering threads. Some of them are ridiculous, but putting them in a separate topic doesn't fix that.

Fernandina · 01/03/2022 19:06

We have a separate topic for Brexit. We have one for Covid. Why not one for this? There are now hundreds upon hundreds of threads about it, and nobody is trying to hide them away, just gather them all in one convenient location. Why not?

I already have AIBU hidden, and if I hide Chat as well then there will be very little of interest for me on here. My kids are all adults, I have no interest in the baby/child/education threads, I know where the Genealogy board is but that's rarely busy, and as for Gardening - it won't be long before people are posting about digging down to their old WW2 bomb shelters, or worrying about growing potentially radioactive vegetables.

There are a lot of people on MN who have emotional difficulties of one sort or another, or have a terrible family situation to deal with. They rely on MN for support, guidance and reassurance in their situation. To come on here and be faced with all the war-scaremongering threads isn't going to do their mental health any good at all.

LilyMumsnet · 01/03/2022 19:08

Hi all

We've discussed this and we're not going to take any action at the moment. This isn't to say that we're never going to make changes with regards to this discussion - but we're reviewing this as we go along. It's an enormous topic at the moment and it's everywhere (not just on Mumsnet). If you need to hide a thread, you can do this without even looking at the opening post. Just open it up and click the 'hide' button above the title.

We are more than happy to look at threads on a case-by-case basis so as ever, you can report to us if you have any concerns.

MyDcAreMarvel · 01/03/2022 19:19

We've discussed this and we're not going to take any action at the moment so you are happy with the responsibility of people who rely on this site really struggling with multiple scaremongering threads. Honestly MNHQ attitude to this is shameful.

A580Hojas · 01/03/2022 19:24

I'm a bit sad you made that decision HQ.

HeadacheGrey · 01/03/2022 19:28

😂🤣😂 So true.

HeadacheGrey · 01/03/2022 19:31

Yes but after reading the title 'I'm taking my kids out of school so we can all die together' the damage is already done Hmm

Furries · 01/03/2022 19:34

Bizarre - perfectly happy to quickly whisk away threads regarding women’s rights, but “we’re all gonna be nuked” threads are absolutely fine.

Think I’ll stick to the Litter Tray for the time being - though that may change if cats develop opposable thumbs, at which point everyone will be panicking that felines will be taking over the world.

cakeorwine · 01/03/2022 19:38

Thanks @LilyMumsnet

This is such an important time in modern history.

FolkloreEvermore · 01/03/2022 19:42

Very disappointing, not sure I’ll be able to stick around.
It’s really surprising that HQ don’t understand that a thread title in of itself can be hugely triggering. Feels like there’s very little genuine engagement in protecting mental health. As a new mum, I was really hoping mumsnet would do something to protect us from unnecessary harm and panic.

AlexaShutUp · 01/03/2022 19:44

It's a sensible decision, MNHQ. Thank you.

We can all help by reporting the more ridiculous threads so that they can be zapped quickly.

A580Hojas · 01/03/2022 20:00

Are the ridiculous threads zapped quickly though?

So were/are Covid and Brexit. Why do they get their own boards?

That’s a pretty dismissive statement and also deliberately ignores the fact that users not on a PC don’t have the option to hide threads without clicking into them.

Perhaps you could be a bit more honest and admit that MN don’t want the additional work of moving threads out of AIBU, plus the fact you want to keep the dominance of AIBU because it gets you revenue whereas the proper use of existing topics wouldn’t.

CarpeVitam · 01/03/2022 20:31

I'm definitely in favour of a War Topic board! Whilst the war threads are not bothering me, I can why they would cause some people considerable stress/anxiety!

CarpeVitam · 01/03/2022 20:32

Looks like a decision has been made. Oh well....

I agree! I emailed MNHQ to ask them to do something about this so I’m sorry to see that this was the outcome.

I thought this was supposed to be a supportive site?

Sort it out MNHQ - the titles are triggering enough to some people.

Samcro · 01/03/2022 20:50

Shame that there will be no topic.
Maybe a trigger warning needs to be used.

No, because the concept of a trigger warning is not to advertise a thread subject people just aren’t interested in, it’s to signpost a thread subject which can cause trauma for people who may have suffered from that subject matter.

It’s not meant to be used to appease the ‘omg we’re all going to diiiiieee’ wet lettuce brigade.
