An algorithm to remove 'Karen'?

182 replies

BIWI · 01/09/2021 14:43

It's a horrible misogynistic and ageist term.

I know you have an algorithm that deletes posts that mention certain other websites; is it possible to have an algorithm that at the very least deletes the word if it's being used? And then automatically posts to say that a word has been deleted because it breaks Talk Guidelines?

(I appreciate that if anyone is on the Baby Names board asking about 'Karen' that might be more difficult!)

The thing is, there are posters who don't seem to realise just what a horrible thing it is to say, but then the rest of their post is filled with people calling them on it, so they never really get an answer to their question.

@AuntieStella and @JustineMumsnet I agree!

TBH I started this thread out of frustration and anger at yet another thread using 'Karen' thoughtlessly, but also seeing it being derailed by the whole pile-on afterwards.

Reading through all the comments here it's evident that it just wouldn't work.

It's still a bit Shock how many people either don't know what it means to call someone a 'Karen' - or simply don't think it's a problem.

Thanks for all the considered responses, and especially those posters who get where I was coming from, now matter how ill-thought-through my OP was!

You see q pileo n. I see justified criticism or your minimising of racism. But thankfully you won't get what you want.

BIWI · 10/09/2021 18:21

I didn't mean a pile-on on this thread - I meant on the one that prompted me to write this one.

And I absolutely do not, never have and never will minimise racism. Or any other 'ism' that's against Talk Guidelines.

Pretty sure I've never seen Karen Millen mentioned on the s&b boards or Karen touted on the baby names Grin

Cutabove · 14/09/2021 13:52

Can we also stop the word woke being used in a derogatory manner?

WomanStanleyWoman · 18/09/2021 20:28

@BIWI

Please - no more suggestions (even if funny!). Otherwise it dilutes what I'm asking MNHQ to consider. There are very few things that really should be deleted, even if we don't like the words, but this one does fall foul of key MN Talk Guidelines.
Ridiculous.
