Does MNHQ Check Our Inboxes?

Just wondering. I received a private message and sent 2 replies and now the recipient has received a message from MNHQ saying the replies were removed at my request. Except that's not true, I made no such request.

I will de register then from tattle too.

OldRumbly · 20/04/2020 10:52

Most of the new members there are just like me, trying out a new forum while also remaining on MN.

Wouldn't say "most" but definitely some are. Perhaps if they can let their site grow organically, they'll have more genuine members. For now, sock puppets are still running rampant taking up space among their .... "woohoo! 1000+ members!!" Grin

Sunnypeople · 20/04/2020 11:11

I have just posted on admin on tattle, it’s waiting for approval.

OldRumbly · 20/04/2020 11:13

Don't think they have a way to deregister, do they? Unless Admins have added that feature now?

Sunnypeople · 20/04/2020 11:15

What?!! Surely you have to be able to de register? Isn’t that a legal requirement?

Sunnypeople · 20/04/2020 11:25

Oh, nice

Sunnypeople · 20/04/2020 11:27

I have deleted and will do my mums chat one.

It’s a shame as I liked tattle, it pisses me off that threads talking about the saintly Jack Monroe get deleted so quickly on here.

OldRumbly · 20/04/2020 11:31

Sorry, what's the question to "No, there isn't"? Can you say what you asked them?

What?!! Surely you have to be able to de register? Isn’t that a legal requirement?

Yea I know they didn't have the dereg option but they may have added it now. Haven't checked since.

Sunnypeople · 20/04/2020 11:35

I posted on site stuff asking if there was any link between them, the new site and anyone on that Reddit sub.

They said there isn’t but I am not risking it if there is as you said.

HebeMumsnet · 20/04/2020 11:35

Morning, everyone.

We just wanted to pick up on sunshinecake's point up there ^^ because we think we might be able to reassure you and it's perhaps something that has confused or concerned others, too.

You said I had a PM message saying removed at the poster's request quite a while ago too. Given some of my PMs are extremely personal I feel a bit alarmed and upset. Seems MNHQ expect loyalty but don't give it back.

We just wanted to reassure you that the reason we do very occasionally look in on PMs (and it is vanishingly rarely) is precisely because we want to look after our loyal and genuine members. If someone has just joined and posted a begging thread, for example, we want to be able to protect our members from that if we can so we might check PMs in an instance like that to see if they are asking for or accepting cash offers etc. We've also had new users joining and spamming members with PMs and again, we'd then look at what they'd sent out to see if it broke guidelines, if it had been reported to us.

So yes, on rare occasions like that, it is something we would do to check if someone were here to troll or beg or spam but usually only when it were reported to us. And we'd have no reason at all to randomly look at genuine users' PMs. We wouldn't want to do that and nor would we have the time, to be honest.

It is also worth knowing that lots of users delete their PMs once they've been read as a matter of course and that will also delete it from your inbox, so having deleted messages these days is pretty normal and doesn't mean there's anything nefarious going on at all. It's likely that the person who sent it to you deleted it. And of course you can do that with all your messages, too, if you don't want them hanging around.

Hope that puts a few minds at rest, anyway. Do shout if you've any further questions.

OldRumbly · 20/04/2020 11:36

Just seen on their 'Terms and Rules', you have to contact them if you want to close your account.

BirchBark · 20/04/2020 11:39

'Wouldn't say "most" but definitely some are.'

'Some' means pretty much 'most', surely?

Live and let live, I say, and I've seen lots of posts on the other site saying the same. I've interacted with lots of nice people over there, as I have here and the few unpleasant comments naming MN posters I've seen there, I've reported. It's odd how the nice comments about that site have been deleted and nasty ones are allowed to stand, though.

I'm not going to de-reg from here, I've been a member for 4 years, I can see the benefits of both, especially regarding FWR on the other site, we're allowed to believe in biology.

BirchBark · 20/04/2020 11:40

All you need to register over there is an email, which can be a disposable one, which mine is.

Sunnypeople · 20/04/2020 11:41

Thanks @OldRumbly I have just messaged them.

OldRumbly · 20/04/2020 11:42

'Some' means pretty much 'most', surely?

Confused
Sunnypeople · 20/04/2020 11:43

To be fair I agree with some comments over there and it would be nice to have somewhere with decent moderation that allows a reasonable discussion about why some posters are never called out, but it often deteriorated in to personal and false accusations.

OldRumbly · 20/04/2020 11:45

Good for you! You're free @Birchback

Sunnypeople · 20/04/2020 11:47
Wink
OldRumbly · 20/04/2020 11:47

On a thread on site stuff, Admin said she's running the site with some Tattle mods. It's still there. @Sunnypeople

BirchBark · 20/04/2020 11:48

Are you implying I'm not genuine?

TedsFederationRep · 20/04/2020 11:49

I'm with BirchBark.

I intend to remain a member of both sites because I get something different from each of them. There are plenty of sensible posters over there and I enjoy chatting to them. There are a small few I'm not so keen on but that happens on any forum - and besides, there is the facility of an Ignore button.

It's also a breath of fresh air to be able to state biological facts openly.

As I said earlier, join, don't join, fine either way. Hopefully, the bashing on both sites will die down and we can all move on.

Sunnypeople · 20/04/2020 11:50

Oh yes the announcing of who is ignoring who is very funny. Right I am off to name-change now. See you all elsewhere.

OldRumbly · 20/04/2020 11:50

TedsFederationRep · 20/04/2020 11:51

I've ignored one person. Didn't announce it. Just pressed the button.

If other people wish to make a song and dance about ignoring people, that only tells you something about them, not about the whole membership.

BirchBark · 20/04/2020 11:54

'I'm not going to de-reg from here, I've been a member for 4 years'

I've searched my first username and it's actually 5 years. Which @MNHQ will be able to confirm, should they so wish.
