Just wondering. I received a private message and sent 2 replies and now the recipient has received a message from MNHQ saying the replies were removed at my request. Except that's not true, I made no such request.

But you can't tell members here about a particular new site they might like... while you can talk about netmums or reddit all you like.

So why is that, what's the difference?

Anonuser1 · 19/04/2020 20:38

Maybe because those two sites haven't sent unsolicited PMs to members of this site.

LawrenceMarlow · 19/04/2020 20:43

Do you really not get the difference yolo?

Reddit and NetMums are established sites. Reddit especially is not a direct competitor.

The new site was set up at a particularly opportune moment, when Mumsnet announced it was struggling. It’s a direct competitor with layout copied from Mumsnet and users who mostly came from Mumsnet. It prides itself on being like Mumsnet but better. It doesn’t seem to want to coexist alongside Mumsnet, it seems to want to completely outdo it. Those in with the management of it have openly encouraged letting MNers know about it, including with tips on how to post or message without getting deleted.

No one cares that there’s other sites, but no other site apart from this one right now is setting itself up as a direct competitor for the same audience.

yoloPenguinsEatfish · 19/04/2020 21:19

Well, no I dont get the difference LawrenceMarlow.

Because it seems ok on here to take the piss out of NetMums ("they're all huns") and Reddit has its own completely different vibe - very much wider, apart from the MNTrolls subforum, which is not a nice place to be.

What does MN have to be scared of? If MN can stand alone on it's own ethos and apparently massive amoutn of posters, then why is if afraid of a currently small offshoot?

Anonuser1 · 19/04/2020 21:23

It's not afraid of a site that has only a handful of people posting, so I wouldn't flatter yourselves.

LawrenceMarlow · 19/04/2020 21:24

It’s really simple. Neither the management or posters of NetMums or Reddit have encouraged posters to come to their site. They are not trying to take Mumsnet’s posters.

I don’t think Mumsnet is afraid. I think it’s perfectly reasonable that Mumsnet doesn’t want a new site actively trying to get its posters. The new site us trying to establish itself on the back of posters’ disillusionment with MN. That’s not professional. If NetMums or Reddit was doing the same, the response would be the same.

ArriettyJones · 19/04/2020 21:34

I think @yoloPenguinsEatfish is playing to some unseen gallery. Goodness knows she’s not making much sense.

Anonuser1 · 19/04/2020 21:36

The returning hero, I think.

LawrenceMarlow · 19/04/2020 21:37

Perhaps @ArriettyJones

yoloPenguinsEatfish · 19/04/2020 21:39

Thanks for that Arietty please tell me what you find hard to understand?

And the "unseen gallery" is in fact of course the other place. No need for trying to hide it, as I've previously said I'm happy to post wherever I like - as we are all free to do so.

I just dont get why a site of this magnitude is so worried about another teeny tiny new site - unless there is something going on that we mere punters dont know about? Because it is us punters that enable the site to monetise itself - advertising, PR etc.

Anonuser1 · 19/04/2020 21:45

How long before your shiny new site has Ads. Do you think the admin is going to pay for it all out of their own pocket?

Post where you like, but don't be fooled into thinking that the admin is not looking at it as a money making opportunity.

ArriettyJones · 19/04/2020 21:46

Pretty sure I do understand the full picture here for once, thanks for asking Grin

AndTheMagicWordIs · 19/04/2020 21:52

Blimey! The thickness is strong or they're just being intentionally obtuse. Best leave them to their new site.

yoloPenguinsEatfish · 19/04/2020 21:52

Well of course every site is a money making opportunity, no one would be silly enough to believe that ads themselves are what put people off using a forum (unless of course you are trying to make no ads a benefit for subscribers - which kind of fucks with the whole business plan anyway unless your subscription levels are high enough to make up fo the loss of advertising revenue... which seems unlikely in the current economic climate).

Arriety I thought you were questioning something I said? In which case happy to answer.

Vegansarefriends · 19/04/2020 22:07

I think that new site might have more trolls on it than here having just had a look at it.
I can see lots of undercurrents of backbiting and those Reddit horrors are sliming all over it.
It will be interesting to see how it pans out.

Anonuser1 · 19/04/2020 22:17

I'm enjoying watching it. Not much else to do atm Grin

Vegansarefriends · 19/04/2020 22:19

Grin The mods seem oblivious to it.

Anonuser1 · 19/04/2020 22:23

The ignore button seems to be a big plus though.

LawrenceMarlow · 19/04/2020 22:30

@yoloPenguinsEatfish I've just checked the other site as I was told you were copying and pasting your posts here over there and that one includes my full user name.

Please remove my username from your post and please don't copy it onto any other site again.

OldRumbly · 19/04/2020 22:37

Admin obviously comes nosing around or she has worker bees who report their findings to her privately cos she knew of my earlier posts not long afterwards. They got to her so much, she slid down from her throne to report them to the 'masses' and scuttled back up. This isn't the first time she's graced the threads with her presence to slag Mumsnet off, she makes one or two posts then probably leans back to watch the 'chicks' peck at her glorious insight. I was put off the site the first time I saw her post on one of the Mumsnet threads. Never heard of such a thing! Thought they were better?! Wink

yoloPenguinsEatfish · 19/04/2020 22:57

I'm so sorry LawrenceMarlow I didnt mean to do that. off to bed now, if I can edit in the morning I will do.

LawrenceMarlow · 19/04/2020 23:18

I would have preferred you to do it tonight but ok thanks.
Your post including my name was quoted by someone else. I'd rather she didn't have my username in her post either so please can you ask her to edit her post too. Hopefully she'll read this and do it before you have a chance to ask.

OldRumbly · 19/04/2020 23:27

@LawrenceMarlow That was a sarcastic reply you received above. The PP knows she can't edit that post after sometime. Definitely not in the morning. That's a fuck you reply

LawrenceMarlow · 19/04/2020 23:30

Oh Sad

I took it at face value. I also asked nicely. I'm disappointed.

Anonuser1 · 19/04/2020 23:30

Very passive aggressive reply. But then the whole site has a very unpleasant under current behind the fake 'niceness'

I'd rather be called a cunt tbh and know where I stand.
