Message from MNHQ: We're afraid we felt we had to delete this thread as we feel like it has strayed way outside of our Talk Guidelines. We do regard deliberate, malicious misgendering (as opposed to accidental slip ups) as transphobic. Thank you to everyone who took the time to post thoughtfully here. We understand folks will want to talk more about pronouns and trans issues in general on another thread perhaps - but we would ask that you do so in way that doesn't rehash or repeat this thread. ONE poster wanted to discuss pronouns and they won. A thread about women being shut down by transactivists was shut down by a ta.

Fucking brilliant.

AND FOR THE RECORD THE PERSON'S PRONOUNS ARE 'THEY'

A vile misogynist was "misgendered" be being called he, because we can not even discuss who is doing this.. It is he's. It is men.

they was not even a thing 5 years ago. If I today demanded my pronouns be "Vagina owner" would everyone have to respect that?

BeyondLovesSweetDee, my apologies if so. The main point still stands though. Being Xphobic to someone isn't legitimised because they have said or done awful things.

toptoe · 25/08/2016 10:44

I have to add that my ideas on this area of feminism have developed massively since reading these threads on MN and that open debate is always better than shutting down debate. Unless it becomes overwhelmed by one loud voice so that others aren't heard, then it would have to be shut down. But many of us genuinely have different beliefs about it and don't want to hurt anyone, we just want to discuss and evolve the best way forward for everyone.

KoalaDownUnder · 25/08/2016 10:45

The problem is, unless someone starts insisting that womanhood is a very specific, defined thing, soon it officially won't be.

Precisely.

It'll be whatever anyone wants it to be - or, like everything else, what da menz want it to be.

BeyondLovesSweetDee · 25/08/2016 10:45

Which is how I know that Ada also goes by Nate.

CheerfulYank · 25/08/2016 10:46

They don't, though, Toptoe. Most transwomen cannot "pass" and will not be treated like a female by society. Furthermore many transwomen are choosing not to have surgery now and so if on the off chance they DO feel the weight of sexism, they don't have to participate.

I will never be able to withdraw myself from the pressures that come with being a female because I will never be able to NOT be female.

Imagining mnhq sitting at their desks thinking oooohh shit what do we say next?!Feel sorry for them. It's a fucking minefield of warped sensibilities and misguided do-gooders. But one thing is for sure, 'Ada Wells' is a fucking toe rag and if he was my son I would be deeply embarrassed and ashamed.

CheerfulYank · 25/08/2016 10:51

here Panama. The rapist turned woman.

BeyondLovesSweetDee · 25/08/2016 10:51

Don't forget everyone, PosieParker has already been banned.

Not for actually misgendering, but for potentially refusing to misgender in future.

I wonder how many people will go off the back of this thread?

IfTheCapFitsWearIt · 25/08/2016 10:53

JAPABiamtheonewhoknocks

It would not be homophobic to point out that a man who says he is gay. But has raped a string of women, isn't actually gay.

Especially if he was trying to get off rape claims by saying "but i'm gay, so I can't have done the rapes"

Just5minswithDacre · 25/08/2016 10:53

Not for actually misgendering, but for potentially refusing to misgender in future.

I missed the detail of that. What happened?

Snowshimmer · 25/08/2016 10:54

I can't believe MN banned a bisexual woman who expressed concern for LGBT students, just because she called a woman-hating homophobic so-called gender neutral male "he".
We're talking about a powertripping man who calls women cunstscum, makes anti-jewish comments and wanted to expell lesbians for not wanting dick.

Snowshimmer · 25/08/2016 10:55

^Don't forget everyone, PosieParker has already been banned.

WTAF! You gonna ban us all MNHQ? I'm going to continue to call womanhating men things like male, he, man, bloke.

BurstBees · 25/08/2016 10:56

Not to mention Ada Wells also wants lots of police to die. But that's all hunky dory, just don't gender label him.

Sad response, MNHQ.

Acardwithbigletters · 25/08/2016 10:57

Can someone link me to the comments Ada Wells made that keep being referenced? I can't find them online.

venusinscorpio · 25/08/2016 10:57

No toptoe, the vast majority of trans women will not experience the same kind of discrimination or harassment women face.

MollHackabout · 25/08/2016 10:58

So, while we're all happily rejecting gender stereotypes (letting DC play with whichever toys they choose be they dolls or fire engines, wearing trousers to work, etc) we have to kowtow to special snowflakes who reinforce these stereotypes or, even more incredibly, just say they 'feel' like a woman? Tell me, Mr Hairy Bloke with your cock and balls and your earning far more than me over a lifetime because of that cock and balls, how does it feel to be a woman? Tell me, because I'm just a silly girl who can't possibly think for herself. I need a big man - oops, sorry! Woman - to do my thinking for me, and tell me what being my sex is all about.

Ah, fuck that. And fuck being silenced by people who haven't received death threats for politely pointing out the silliness of it all on social media as I - and my DD - have done. That'd be the same DD who, as a 16 year old lesbian, founded her school's first LGBT society which did wonderful work supporting teenagers trying to work out who they were, often in the face of terrible judgement and prejudice at home. The same DD who was forced to close down the society she was so proud of, and delete her Twitter account, after receiving those death threats and being horrendously bullied by TAs for being 'transphobic' - because she rejected the notion that all 'cis' women are scum and she had the guts to challenge it. She's now rejected all forms of activism and has distanced herself from lesbian groups at uni out of fear and has become very isolated. This is the message that's being sent to our daughters. Perhaps MNHQ would like to consider that for a second.

CheerfulYank · 25/08/2016 10:58

Yeah, Posie's gone now. She's been here ages.

venusinscorpio · 25/08/2016 10:59

I remember your thread Moll. Your poor daughter.

MaudGonneMad · 25/08/2016 11:00

I've read your posts about your DD before, Moll. What happened to her is awful, and indicative of precisely the sort of issues that the original thread was attempting to highlight.

MollHackabout · 25/08/2016 11:00

I've seen women referred to as 'cis' against their wishes on threads before. I'm not sure those posts were deleted for misgendering

Good point. Can we get some clarification on this point please MN?

venusinscorpio · 25/08/2016 11:02

And yes MNHQ, I for one would like you to consider how as a media outlet you are endorsing a message that women's feelings aren't important, and stop with the inane mealy mouthed platitudes about "respect".

ItsAllGoingToBeFine · 25/08/2016 11:02

I'm pretty sure that MN has said in the past that using cis could be construed as misgendering...

travellingbird · 25/08/2016 11:02

acard

Details here - thetab.com/uk/edinburgh/2016/08/18/edinburghs-lgbt-convenor-said-i-sure-hope-police-die-today-24996

And search Ada Wells and the language Ada used on Twitter.

Snowshimmer · 25/08/2016 11:03

Just how many women have been banned from MN for writing "he"?
