Protesting deletions on the thread about trans sex offender

I thoroughly dispute that my posts or many of the op's posts were transphobic. I stated several times that people can't change sex and that trans women are male, these are absolute, verifiable facts. Not matters of opinion. And definitely not phobic or bigoted statements. Something has changed in your moderation policy recently and a lot more is being deleted for perceived transphobia which wouldn't have previously. What is happening here? Are we being shut down? Are facts beyond the pale at mumsnet now?

Not bored here. I find it important and interesting.

I haven't posted much lately at all, but have been spurred to do so because of the deletions, really? transphobic?
Shutting down debate is what transactivist do, with shouts of bigot and transphobe. It's why MRAs love it so much, a trendy bandwagon to 'legitimately' shout down women.

I honestly thought Mumsnet was better than that.

It's a male sex offender, who's risk of offending remains the same post transition.
I think we should be allowed to say that.

There are many times more wedding threads but if people aren't interested they can just not read them. It takes you five seconds to close it.

It isn't boring, it's frightening. And to be honest I cannot comprehend women who don't get the implications of this one way or another and want to just push it to the side and hide it. It shouldn't be hidden, it needs more and more exposure and raising of awareness.

I am really shocked that people have been deleted for making factual statements. This is deeply depressing. I thought MN was one of the few places we could discuss these matters without being shut down.

I am not impressed at all MNHQ.

Report
WannaBe · 03/08/2016 19:43

But it's not going to get that kind of exposure here. Because there is too much shutting down of the debate either by MN HQ or by the trans activists who cry transphobia at every turn.

On the whole I don't read the threads, but the titles are there on active usually running to hundreds and hundreds of posts. It's not hard to know what goes on inside those threads given that a thread pops up on site stuff regularly talking about trans this or trans that, and can we ban the term cis. And on and on and on.

So if people want to discuss trans issues, can we not have a topic which can be hidden by all who don't want to discuss them? I don't have to have a discussion to know what my thoughts are on shared changing facilities or athletes entering the olympics.

Just don't click on the threads. How hard is that? Are you really saying you can't even bear to read a thread title?

A lot of us would prefer not to have a "trans" topic because having the discussion in AIBU / chat etc has been really important for awareness raising on the issue,

Report
Doggity · 03/08/2016 19:51

There are lots of things I find boring, so I don't click on the threads in the first place. You can't censor topics because a few people find it boring. It's not mandatory to read.

Report
venusinscorpio · 03/08/2016 19:56

No to the trans topic. There are many many threads here. No need to read the ones you don't like or find boring. But stop trying to shut this important discussion down. It very much needs to be had.

I don't want a trans topic because it marginalises the debate. Today's thread was actually about sentencing of a child abuser and the arguments being used as mitigating circumstances. Is that 'just' a trans issue? No.
It was also about cataloguing of sexual assaults by women and how figures will be impacted - is that a trans issue? No.
It was also about posters claiming chromosomes change because of surgery and hormones. Is that a trans issue? No, it's bad science.

I don't think there should be a trans topic for debates such as these, chat and AIBU and the feminist boards are fine for that. I do, however, think that the LGBT topic should be a space where those of us who have practical and emotional issues regarding the people in our lives who are trans should be able to speak freely, ask and offer advice to each other without it being turned into yet another trans debate.

Whether you agree with it or not some people choose to live this way and we should be able to speak about the issues that come along with it without our discussions being shut down.

I heard that one poster was banned for saying she wouldn't use the pronoun 'they'.

She didn't actually 'misgender' anyone. Just suggested that she might not agree to using that pronoun.

In case any of you are interested, my pronouns are banshee and crone.

And it's like Groundhog Day in terms of discussion, same things over and over again.

This. Some posters seem bloody obsessed with the subject, they seem to seize on any excuse to start a new thread. And for all the protests on this one, the vast majority of posts on them are specifically discriminatory about transwomen and obsessive about the dreadful dangers posed by people with penises.

obsessive about the dreadful dangers posed by people with penises

That thread was about a specific trans woman who sexually abused a child with their penis. That person poses a dreadful danger and continues to do so because there is no suitable treatment program, apparently.

Realistically, I don't see what a trans section would achieve. Posters would still post in News, AIBU and Chat. The same way as you can find posts about education, relationships and parenting all over the site, there would still be trans' posts all over the site. It's how MN is.

I don't think there should be a trans section. As boring as it is to some, the very real possibility that the near future brings identity overtaking biological sex in importance is horrifying and should be open to all. I have no gender identity, I reject gender as a concept, but I am female. That I may soon have to share spaces with biological males erodes my rights as a female and it will not stand.
