Trans people being allowed to compete against women in the Olympics

OhShutUpThomas · 24/01/2016 09:37

The Olympics are now allowing men who have taken hormones for 12 months compete against women.

It is NOT transphobic to say that this is grossly unfair and a huge violation of women's rights.

Women who have trained all their lives cannot be expected to compete against people with male bodies and who will be allowed roughly 4 times the normal female testosterone levels.

It's not on. We can't stand for it.

Please get behind this mumsnet. Someone needs to take a stand.

It's NOT transphobic to state that this is unfair. It really isn't.

I have noticed a distinct lack of "oh ffs, not another trans thread" posts on both of the threads. Whether they're just not clicking, not posting, or feeling too sheepish to share their peak-trans after a lot of moaning, who knows.

BeyondBootcampsAgain · 25/01/2016 18:01

Failing anything else, could we please have the original aibu thread put into the "in the news" list (The one underneath 'trending')?

PenguinVox · 25/01/2016 18:05

I also think there's a clear majority view on this issue.
Yes, maybe a vote would be useful.

TheCountessofFitzdotterel · 25/01/2016 18:09

The majority on this is clear. If you asked 'should transwomen use women's toilets? ' or 'should you use female pronouns for transwomen? ' there would be much heated discussion but this is a different kettle of fish. If anything it seems even more unanimous so far than the (excellent) We Believe You campaign, which had quite a lot of naysayers.

FattyNinjaOwl · 25/01/2016 18:21

There is an absolute majority on this. But I didn't really expect any different.

Blistory · 25/01/2016 18:21

MNHQ, if not you, then who ?

There are times when doing the right thing isn't a numbers game or a political one.

HermioneWeasley · 25/01/2016 18:25

MNHQ, I think you're wrong on this - the voices of the posters on the issue of including Transwomen in women's sporting events has been almost unanimous in saying this is unfair. Why do you think there are mixed feelings on this?

FlyByNightSky · 25/01/2016 18:38

"Mixed feelings" WTF??

This specific topic (ie whether transwomen should be permitted to compete in womens' sport based on self identification as a woman) is the closest to a unanimous voice I have ever seen on 10 years on MN!!

At least have the decency to admit that you don't want to get drawn on the matter for political or personal safety reasons. Please.

BeyondBootcampsAgain · 25/01/2016 19:22

Hq, have you read the threads? Cause the response does seem to be as if it were aimed at a general trans thread, rather than this specific one.

Or are you just as sick of hearing about the whole thing as my dh? Grin

TiggyD · 25/01/2016 19:57

It does seem like the proposed(?) rules may not be enough to make sure some people don't gain an unfair advantage. I think the people who should have the final say are the scientists/doctors rather than anybody political.

TheCountessofFitzdotterel · 25/01/2016 20:01

Tiggy, the choice of scientists/doctors is going to be political, though, isn't it? Or you could get doctors who are specialists in trans issues because they do gender reassignments which means they have a financial interest in the whole thing.
I think your instincts are right but it is probably really hard to achieve!

QueenStromba · 25/01/2016 20:03

See HQ - even Tiggy agrees with us and I didn't think he was capable of agreeing with gender critical feminists on anything.

BeyondBootcampsAgain · 25/01/2016 20:06

See hq, even tiggy agrees!!!!

BeyondBootcampsAgain · 25/01/2016 20:06

Grin x post there

Alisvolatpropiis · 25/01/2016 20:14

What a bullshit weak response from HQ.

OhShutUpThomas · 25/01/2016 20:27

Thank you for the reply MNHQ.

But in not sure where you've got the idea that there are 'mixed feelings' on this.
On this thread, and the other (with 650+ replies) NOT ONE PERSON thinks that it is fair to allow people who are biologically female to be forced to compete against people who are biologically male.

NOT ONE.

If you don't want to get behind the campaign, then fine. It's your decision. But please don't bullshit us with reasons such as the ones you've given.

I don't expect to be gaslighted by MNHQ of all places.

So far, on Mumsnet, the overwhelming majority have been in favour of this campaign. In fact, NO ONE has said it would be a bad idea, or that they wouldn't support it.
But if YOU don't want to support it, then at least give us the real reason.

I get that it's contentious, and that it may incite anger in some anti women's rights groups. But someone needs to be the one to stand up and say -

NO. THIS IS NOT OK.

Because it's really, really not.

Wow this is shocking ! I'm in, please mn, get behind this.

bakeoffcake · 25/01/2016 20:30

Bloody hell I'm shocked at MNHQ response- especially the reason given.

Ubik1 · 25/01/2016 20:43

The women's Olympic boxing could be terrifying interesting if this trans thing continues.

TheWomanInTheWall · 25/01/2016 20:50

I wonder what Nicola Adams makes of this.

msrisotto · 25/01/2016 20:51

MNHQ - You are wrong on this occasion. This specific issue - transwomen in sport has been a consensus issue.

I don't blame them for not wanting to TBH. I wouldn't want to be doxxed, have the police sent to my house, harassed and told to die in a fire either.

oneowlgirl · 25/01/2016 20:51

Agreed Op. I really do wish that a strong group would get behind this.

kua · 25/01/2016 20:52

What will it take HQ to make you change your mind?

OhShutUpThomas · 25/01/2016 20:56

The women's Olympic boxing could be terrifying interesting if this trans thing continues.

Google Fallon Fox. A MTF MMA fighter who just loves to batter women. Now gets paid to do it legally, and the women can't refuse to fight as they'll lose their rankings and sponsorship.

All in the name of equality, of course.
And you can't complain or refuse to fight anyway, as its transphobic, you see.

"Hi all,

Thanks for you posts. We've had a look at this and it is not something we would officially back as there are a lot of mixed feelings across the boards on this subject matter.

We have to have a very clear majority of posters who back campaigns before we will support them and we don't have that with this issue.

Thanks for flagging this to us, we'll always have a look and a think about campaigns."

Please could you link to the poll/survey On this subject which demonstrates the proportion of mumsnet users that do/don't support it. Many thanks.
