Trans people being allowed to compete against women in the Olympics

OhShutUpThomas · 24/01/2016 09:37

The Olympics are now allowing men who have taken hormones for 12 months compete against women.

It is NOT transphobic to say that this is grossly unfair and a huge violation of women's rights.

Women who have trained all their lives cannot be expected to compete against people with male bodies and who will be allowed roughly 4 times the normal female testosterone levels.

It's not on. We can't stand for it.

Please get behind this mumsnet. Someone needs to take a stand.

It's NOT transphobic to state that this is unfair. It really isn't.

It's quite easy to set up surveys online if anyone cared to do it.

I'm shocked at the response from mnhq. This is a serious woman's issue with a unanimous view from all posters. Allowing transwomen to compete against women is wrong.

onahorsewithnoname · 25/01/2016 21:28

Agreed with OP

OhShutUpThomas · 25/01/2016 21:32

Could it possibly be that there is no way of justifying this decision; that there is no way it can be seen to be fair?

I think it could well be.

OhShutUpThomas · 25/01/2016 21:34

I'm still really shocked at the response from MNHQ.

I'm not surprised they're not keen to take on the issue, as everyone's so terrified of being 'transphobic,' but I can't believe the crappy gaslighting excuse of 'there's mixed feelings.' I really can't.

I bet those students wish they hadn't treated GG like shit now. Angry

She would have been the perfect person to get on board about this.
But she was treated so appealingly I doubt she will want to touch it with a barge pole
And who can blame her.

hollowlegs · 25/01/2016 21:35

appallingly.

SurferJet · 25/01/2016 21:36

GG saw this coming.

hollowlegs · 25/01/2016 21:44

If not even MN will back women on this, then it's lights out I'm afraid.
Game Over.

How disappointing.

SoftDriftedSnow · 25/01/2016 21:45

Dittany saw this coming.

In all honesty, I don't blame MNHQ for swerving this, at least at this stage. Anyone seen anything from womens sporting organisations? Their circus, their monkeys at this point.

No MNHQ, there are not mixed opinions across the boards (at least as far as I can see). There is a small number of vocal posters who either throw tantrums or whinge about their feelz being hurted.

Frankly I am so pissed off with the way you have handled this and the lack of support re the assaults in Europe over new year I am seriously considering if this is the forum for me.

kua · 25/01/2016 21:53

So, can we ask for Germaine Greer to do one? Why not?

kua · 25/01/2016 21:54

maryz they don't ,this is the problem.

RufusTheReindeer · 25/01/2016 21:55

Agree with everyone on here

Thats it really

Its dreadfully unfair and incredibly unsporting

Absolutely not "playing the game"

Happyrouter · 25/01/2016 21:56

I can also see why they would want to give this a swerve, they are a business looking to make money and this could harm the business, but (big but), don't claim is because there isn't the support, that is so insulting to our intelligence, and don't claim to be a champion of women when in reality it's all about profit and loss.

OhShutUpThomas · 25/01/2016 21:57

GG got thrown under the bus the last time she dared to criticise anything trans, so I'm not sure how she'd feel about sticking her head over the parapet again.

I'm drafting a letter to send to female athletes and prominent figures though, and I'll definitely send her one. Can't hurt.

OP posts:
FattyNinjaOwl · 25/01/2016 22:15

Thomas I think the letter is a good idea. I'm also wondering if it would be possible to set up a petition to have the decision looked at again, taking women's rights into account this time. I wouldn't know where to start with that, but would certainly have my signature on there.

venusinscorpio · 25/01/2016 22:19

Just in case anyone needs to include in a letter etc a general link very clearly laying out all the issues for women and the threat to women's rights, this is a really good blog post linked to earlier on the general FWR trans issues thread:

stephaniedaviesarai.com/cwc/uncategorized/maria-millers-report-puts-feminists-in-an-impossible-position/

hollowlegs · 25/01/2016 22:24

Everybody knows that men are stronger, and faster than women, as well as having higher lung capacity and more efficient blood flow. I don't know if trans women athletes are mandated to have a certain amount of surgery, or hormone therapy, but if that trans athlete was able to skimp on the hormones that block testosterone they would have a massive advantage. Even with the testosterone reduction, they still have the increased bone density, and structure that accompanies the XY genotype. My final argument is that that the male pelvic geometry is better suited to running than the females. The integrity of women's sports could be destroyed by this.

Exactly.
Female hormones can't change everything.
They may be 'women', but will still have a male, heavier, stronger, 'different' skeletal structure - a huge advantage in sport, I would think.

MangosteenSoda · 25/01/2016 22:29

Adding my voice to this. I'm amazed it's not considered news in RL.

lunar1 · 25/01/2016 22:32

Fair enough MN, but at least be honest, you don't want to stand up for women's rights as you are choosing not to support us. There are no mixed views from your members.

SoftDriftedSnow · 25/01/2016 22:35

The people who should run with this are the so-called journalists who camp out on MN in order to pick up a human interest story.

Here's a story to really get their teeth into.
