Trans people being allowed to compete against women in the Olympics

OhShutUpThomas · 24/01/2016 09:37

The Olympics are now allowing men who have taken hormones for 12 months compete against women.

It is NOT transphobic to say that this is grossly unfair and a huge violation of women's rights.

Women who have trained all their lives cannot be expected to compete against people with male bodies and who will be allowed roughly 4 times the normal female testosterone levels.

It's not on. We can't stand for it.

Please get behind this mumsnet. Someone needs to take a stand.

It's NOT transphobic to state that this is unfair. It really isn't.

Agree with all you say OP. Also agree MN won't even think about supporting any such campaign. Too 'political' - too many poss repercussions. Arguably MN isn't the best focus. It's a parenting website.

TheWatchersCouncil · 24/01/2016 16:52

Boney as I understand it from other posters on MN, the male estate TH was originally housed in had separate facilities specifically for vulnerable prisoners, where they could be safely housed. So if it was a case of prisoner safety, the men's prison would have done just fine.

The argument has been made here many times before that there are many male prisoners who are vulnerable and at risk in a men's prison - young, weak, old, gay (quite apart from vulnerability due to the crime they have been found guilty of). Should these also be transferred to the female estate because of the problem of male violence within the male prison system? The task should be to ensure the safety of male prisoners within the male estate. Not decide to ship some categories off to the female estate.

BoneyBackJefferson · 24/01/2016 17:00

TheWatchersCouncil

I put twice in my post that Tara Hudson shouldn't be in a female prison.

To extrapolate that somehow all vulnerable male prisoners should be put in a female prison is incorrect and not what I was posting at all.

TheWatchersCouncil · 24/01/2016 17:12

Sorry Boney - didn't mean at all that that is what you meant!

I put my last paragraph in as a general point about arguments based on safety (or lack thereof) of TW prisoners in the male estate. It was a general point, not a specific-to-you point. Apologies for not being clearer about that.

BoneyBackJefferson · 24/01/2016 17:41

watchers

I agree with what you have posted, the problem is that somebody won't be happy.

But the rights of Trans-Women shouldn't be able to steam roller over the rights of Women.

(as an aside I shall wait for someone to rip that very poorly worded sentence apart)

Sorry the "but" shouldn't be in there

lovinglilystevans.wordpress.com/2015/06/30/trans-women-in-my-ptsd-group-and-performing-femininity-2/

I was just re-reading this blog post about why it quite possibly isn't a good idea to have women and trans women in the same therapy group. It's about a woman who has ptsd following child sexual abuse, so could be triggering, and it's very upsetting

Palomb · 24/01/2016 18:29

I'm with you on this Op.

madcapped · 24/01/2016 18:33

I would support a mn campaign on this.

dorade · 24/01/2016 23:13

Yes, This forum is the only place where people seem to feel free to say what they really think about this madness. It would be good to have an MN campaign.

On the subject of Tara Hudson, I thought I read somewhere that Tara was out of prison and Tara's mother had called for transgender prisons.

MrsGradyOldLady · 24/01/2016 23:21

If anyone's interested, some of us have started a group to discuss how to raise awareness of this issue. This is the facebook link:

www.facebook.com/groups/ATWIWS/

It's called "Women for women's sport".

BeyondBootcampsAgain · 25/01/2016 11:47

HQ, could we - at the very, very least - have a blog post that explains why this is a bad thing (as soon as one is written!) featured as the blog of the day?

OhShutUpThomas · 25/01/2016 15:50

Any decisions yet MNHQ?

Ps there is another thread running on this, linked up thread - just so you don't think people have lost interest!

Yy^ and the fb group has been rather busy today too

RebeccaMumsnet · 25/01/2016 16:57

Hi all,

Thanks for you posts. We've had a look at this and it is not something we would officially back as there are a lot of mixed feelings across the boards on this subject matter.

We have to have a very clear majority of posters who back campaigns before we will support them and we don't have that with this issue.

Thanks for flagging this to us, we'll always have a look and a think about campaigns.

QueenStromba · 25/01/2016 17:07

The threads on transwomen competing against women in sport have been as close to unanimous as any thread I've ever seen on Mumsnet.

TheWatchersCouncil · 25/01/2016 17:11

Exactly Queen. No one has come along and said this is fair and appropriate.

TheWomanInTheWall · 25/01/2016 17:12

Thank you for commenting, Rebecca.

I agree there is mixed feelings across MN in general about the approach to trans issues. I haven't seen much in mixed feelings on this topic in particular, where the physicality of the sports person is so very relevant.

Palomb · 25/01/2016 17:12

No-one seriously thought Mumsnet would actually be our voice, did they? no organisations with any power to actually influence anyone over his ridiculous trans issue is going to have the bottle to put their neck on the line over it are they? Can you imagine the backlash from the only people that see to matter any more - the men.

venusinscorpio · 25/01/2016 17:19

I think that's a cop out mumsnet. You've educated people for their wrongheaded ideas before. There are mixed feelings about many issues that you've chosen to campaign on. However I am glad we have this space to discuss this, there are few others. Thank you for that.

LineyReborn · 25/01/2016 17:26

I do think that there IS a very clear majority of MN posters regarding this particular issue.

nancy75 · 25/01/2016 17:27

maybe we should have a vote? again I won't hold my breath.

emwithme · 25/01/2016 17:27

I will use people's pronoun of choice. I will call them by the name they want to be called. That is called "being polite".

I will not sit idly by and let men take over women's spaces. I will not let people conflate sex (a biological fact) and gender (a bullshit social construct) to enable women to be erased from society.
