Trans people being allowed to compete against women in the Olympics

The Olympics are now allowing men who have taken hormones for 12 months compete against women.

It is NOT transphobic to say that this is grossly unfair and a huge violation of women's rights.

Women who have trained all their lives cannot be expected to compete against people with male bodies and who will be allowed roughly 4 times the normal female testosterone levels.

It's not on. We can't stand for it.

Please get behind this mumsnet. Someone needs to take a stand.

It's NOT transphobic to state that this is unfair. It really isn't.

Hi all,

Thanks for you posts. We've had a look at this and it is not something we would officially back as there are a lot of mixed feelings across the boards on this subject matter.

We have to have a very clear majority of posters who back campaigns before we will support them and we don't have that with this issue.

Thanks for flagging this to us, we'll always have a look and a think about campaigns.

@OhShutUpThomas

Thank you for the reply MNHQ.

But in not sure where you've got the idea that there are 'mixed feelings' on this.
On this thread, and the other (with 650+ replies) NOT ONE PERSON thinks that it is fair to allow people who are biologically female to be forced to compete against people who are biologically male.

NOT ONE.

If you don't want to get behind the campaign, then fine. It's your decision. But please don't bullshit us with reasons such as the ones you've given.

I don't expect to be gaslighted by MNHQ of all places.

So far, on Mumsnet, the overwhelming majority have been in favour of this campaign. In fact, NO ONE has said it would be a bad idea, or that they wouldn't support it.
But if YOU don't want to support it, then at least give us the real reason.

I get that it's contentious, and that it may incite anger in some anti women's rights groups. But someone needs to be the one to stand up and say -

NO. THIS IS NOT OK.

Because it's really, really not.

Hi Thomas,

Thanks for your post.

We receive reports and mails surrounding this issue that are not always posted on site, and we can see from those that, while the responses on the threads may be unanimous, the feelings of those who are reading and not posting are not.

By all means, continue to discuss the issues here and take action if you see fit, but as it stands at the moment, Mumsnet will not be starting a campaign.

We do take all of this seriously, and are continuing discussions on the subject at MNHQ.

@fidel1ne

I wonder if it's possible for mnhq to "hide" a thread from Trending.

I'm sure that I remember them saying it was in some previous bunfight

Yes, we can and we do. We haven't hidden this one or the other threads on the same issue. We would only hide from trending (never from active) if we had complaints about a very sweary/nasty title or on the odd occasion when a thread is really kicking off in a bad way, while we look into it. It would remain in active the whole time.

Hi all,

We have just asked Tech for the specific algorithm as I'm not 100% sure. I'll post it as soon as we have it but we haven't excluded this thread or any other on the same issue from trending.

We have no reason to shut down this discussion, we are pleased that you have a place to have this discussion, it's incredibly interesting.

RebeccaMumsnet · 26/01/2016 11:45

Yes, we've just added to ITN.

RebeccaMumsnet · 26/01/2016 12:09

Tech have come back to us on trending, here is what they say:

Every 5 minutes we get the list of top viewed threads from Google Analytics and we just display the first 5 of those.

So it is the most viewed threads, not the most posted on.

RebeccaMumsnet · 27/01/2016 12:10

Hi all,

Sadly, we have had to remove a few posts for troll hunting. As always, we're very happy for everyone to express their view; you don't have to agree with it, but as long as everyone posts within the guidelines, we'd like to encourage an open discussion.

We've been discussing these threads at MNHQ, and we'd be happy to ask a representative from the IOC or similar to come on for a chat, and/or to host a debate on the issue. We're currently putting some feelers out, but if there's anyone in particular you'd like to hear from, let us know; we can't guarantee anything, obviously, but we can always make an approach.

On the question of a campaign, we tend not to run them on issues where there's strong polarisation on the site (ie some people -albeit a minority - feel v strongly against), and in areas where we may not have a lot of influence (an international athletics body may, for example, be better placed to take this on). However, we can certainly host the debate and publicise the strength of feeling on this issue voiced here.

Thanks
MNHQ
