The great emoji debate

Afternoon everyone,

So: emojis. We've had a few questions about these over the last few days. Some of you love them and some of you loathe them. The truth of the matter is that they came into being as a side-effect of a technical fix that we did; we didn't set out to introduce them (and in fact, didn't expect you to discover them quite as quickly as you did Grin). On the question of whether they stay or whether they go, it's really up to you lot. We can get rid of them again; equally, if you like having them, we're happy for them to stay. Over to you ...

HemanOrSheRa · 08/12/2015 01:38

Oh Maryz still big fat hearts, hideous clapping hands and enormous dancing girls. I don't like it. I don't like it all.

And you did make a very good point up thread about how this would impact on the visually impaired.

freespiritsbadattitude · 08/12/2015 02:33

Don't like. At all. Use your words, people!

ImtheChristmasCarcass · 08/12/2015 03:25

👀 💜 Emoji.

😄

Blueturquoise · 08/12/2015 07:20

I like the limited emojis option and please not in titles

Too many emojis are conversation killers and it s a slippery slope to tickers and animated signatures Hun IMO

Sparklingbrook · 08/12/2015 07:23

I wonder what we are voting for too Maryz both options are a bit rubbish. Hopefully once the excitement dies down things will return to normal.

FishWithABicycle · 08/12/2015 07:41

I dislike them and particularly dislike that they look different from different devices. I like words. We developed beyond pictorial hieroglyphs some millennia ago didn't we? I don't want to have to interpret a pictorial post to work out wtf someone means like it's a game of pictionary.

Would it be technically feasible to allow them in the _chat area (except thread titles) but block them everywhere else?

Snoopadoop · 08/12/2015 07:44

For this screen capture in 'threads I'm on' alone. I want them to be limited and only in the actual post. Not in thread titles or active convo, threads I'm on summaries etc...

It's beginning to make MN look like a site for the illiterate. Or for a bunch of primary school children.

Lweji · 08/12/2015 08:25

We don't like or respond well to text speak here. I think it will go the same way with emojis. Perhaps apart from the odd game of pictionary or drunken thread.
As it is, already, actually.
So far they are mostly in lighthearted or dedicated threads. Not exactly all over MN, even considering the novelty.

Lweji · 08/12/2015 08:28

In my long list of threads I'm on, there are exactly three threads with any visible emojis. And that includes one about them and the pictionary thread.

ClancyMoped · 08/12/2015 08:38

We don't like or respond well to text speak here

Confused ..but we do like and respond well to a long list of site specific acronyms ...coz that's completely different Hmm

Lweji · 08/12/2015 08:42

That's different, innit? Grin

Lweji · 08/12/2015 08:44

In any case, acronyms tend to be around the same DH, DS, DW, DD, SIL, BIL, FIL, MIL...

And not whole sentences with just acronyms.

Sparklingbrook · 08/12/2015 08:47

It does say in the tips for new posters to avoid text speak.

AlisonWunderland · 08/12/2015 08:50

I used to use Menopause Matters forum and it gave me a headache.
Posts that had more smileys than text.
And animated dancing smileys!

You want advice on your hot flushes and you get a Disney movie!

SealSong · 08/12/2015 08:58

They're AWFUL

One of the joys of MN is that it's not been cluttered with crap like this.

Please get rid!

OpheliaMoo · 08/12/2015 09:00

At first I liked them, now they make the MN ones look sad and I think the differing sized emoji's look pants

FrackThoseCylons · 08/12/2015 09:29

I Don't like.

It's a slippery slope, I tell you.

🎢🍅

FrackThoseCylons · 08/12/2015 09:30

They look huge and rubbish.

I like the mn emoticons. These will spoil mn.

RatOnnaStick · 08/12/2015 09:37

I like

White page. With writing and the odd thoughtfully placed Hmm.

Thurlow · 08/12/2015 10:34

Well this is irritating.

On my phone they are HUGE and colourful.

On my laptop they are small and black.

On my PC, I'm getting mostly plain black squares.

Surely something that appears so differently on different technologies is rubbish for use?

Sparklingbrook · 08/12/2015 10:38

Agree Thurlow. Not v inclusive if everyone sees them differently.
