The great emoji debate

Afternoon everyone,

So: emojis. We've had a few questions about these over the last few days. Some of you love them and some of you loathe them. The truth of the matter is that they came into being as a side-effect of a technical fix that we did; we didn't set out to introduce them (and in fact, didn't expect you to discover them quite as quickly as you did Grin). On the question of whether they stay or whether they go, it's really up to you lot. We can get rid of them again; equally, if you like having them, we're happy for them to stay. Over to you ...

Look - this is what I see on Chrome on a PC

They are getting bigger and bigger - I only MN on my phone via Chrome and yesterday they were normal sized, today someone's flicked a switch or something and the icons at the top of this box have also changed.
They are kind of fun🎅 but the think I like the most on MN is the conversation and the way people write. Pictionary thread - great fun. Maybe just in chat. 🎼🌃

PeasOnEarth · 08/12/2015 11:00

thing not think.
see pps about edit function!!
Thurlow put it all much more clearly.

AlisonWunderland · 08/12/2015 11:08

On my tablet they are all fancy and coloured.

On my PC they are tiny black and white scribbles, cos I'm still using windows 7.
Maybe if I upgrade to Windows 10 they will be holograms

Kacie123 · 08/12/2015 11:18

Late to this party but I'm not a big fan. I like people using words to describe things, not icons. It's part of what makes the site unique.

Kacie123 · 08/12/2015 11:19

(She said, with a cheery Grin[santa])

zoobaby · 08/12/2015 11:24

I hate how emojis (even the official ones) make the line spacing go off kilter. Argh!

Can I suggest a new website called mumsnethuns if emojis are here to stay?

ExitPursuedByABear · 08/12/2015 11:40

Hell no

Cremo · 08/12/2015 12:39

I love them.saves writing in situations like when on mobile device.
Grin is infinitely better that LOL , which makes me feel like a 14 yr old.

TelephoneIgnoringMachine · 08/12/2015 12:49

No. Perhaps get rid of them & add a few more symbols to the list if people want more choices?

Sparklingbrook · 08/12/2015 12:58

The people that love them don't seem to care that loads of posters can't see them. Sad

CheeseEMouse · 08/12/2015 13:17

Please, no. I spend long enough deciphering what my dad has written in emoji (it's like modern hieroglyphics and he sees it as a challenge...)

MilkTwoSugarsThanks · 08/12/2015 13:27

The people that can't see them don't seem to care that loads of posters love them 😢.

Grin

It's a bit like underwear
😊 = lovely, pretty, colourful
Smile = school issue scratchy gym knickers

Smile is just so shit. I can see the bloody pixels fgs! 😄

EcclefechanTart · 08/12/2015 13:45

I hate them. Absolutely hate them. Please take them away.

Lweji · 08/12/2015 13:52

Where are all these threads full of emojis?

(except the pictionary one)

Thurlow · 08/12/2015 13:55

Milk, this is what your post looks like to me on my PC, which... kind of defeats the point Grin

MilkTwoSugarsThanks · 08/12/2015 14:02

Fair point about the ◻️ Thurlow, but I still think MN approved emojis are too limited and the faces are shit.

Grin/😄

Now if MN did something about that, I'd be less upset about losing keyboard emojis.

ARichVernacular · 08/12/2015 14:04

They're shit.

SoupDragon · 08/12/2015 14:05

The people that can't see them don't seem to care that loads of posters love them

Which isn't the same as excluding a whole chunk of people.

Thurlow · 08/12/2015 14:13

It's probably just that we've got used to the MN ones so they don't jump out or look to garish.

The new ones do, especially when they are big. I can just imagine someone posting one on a very serious or upsetting thread and it would just look a little weird!

I like the pixelated MN ones. They're old-skool. A bit like Space Invaders.

👾

ScrambledSmegs · 08/12/2015 14:23

Ah crapola. Can't believe I just did that. I hate non-mn emojis, hate them I tell you.

MilkTwoSugarsThanks · 08/12/2015 14:24

This is for you Thurlow - this is what it looked like to me Grin

Soup - excluded is a bit dramatic, they're only emojis 🙄

SymphonyofShadows · 08/12/2015 14:32

I don't care either way, if I see a big string of them I just mentally skip over it without taking in the meaning so they are lost on me. Apart from the Cadburys one, that is highly offensive after they killed Dairy Milk.
