The great emoji debate

Afternoon everyone,

So: emojis. We've had a few questions about these over the last few days. Some of you love them and some of you loathe them. The truth of the matter is that they came into being as a side-effect of a technical fix that we did; we didn't set out to introduce them (and in fact, didn't expect you to discover them quite as quickly as you did Grin). On the question of whether they stay or whether they go, it's really up to you lot. We can get rid of them again; equally, if you like having them, we're happy for them to stay. Over to you ...

You need a more varied diet, wicked - that lot will give you scurvy. Try this: 🍉🍍🍒🍏🍐🍋🌽🍌🍇🍑🍊

Can we not have a proper poll? We get them for name changes, why not for this?

CoteDAzur · 11/12/2015 09:23

[aghast] at hamburger & chips emojis.

Does anyone know of a good site where we can chat without all this garbage if MNHQ refuses to ban them?

Lweji · 11/12/2015 09:29

I'm sad, Maryz, that you can't see my little hearts.

BertieBotts · 11/12/2015 09:31

Reddit and B3ta still have text only interfaces. But no. It's not mumsnet. They have threaded conversations and voting and smell like boys.

I miss the days where lolling, hunning and kissing would get you ostracised

Yes, Reddit is OK but it has too much testosterone swishing around the place for a proper conversation. Plus it's American (mostly).

If we have to migrate there, we can have an MN sub for ourselves and talk there, I guess. Entry requirements can be questions about MN Classics and the candidate's views on hunning & kissing.

Fiderer · 11/12/2015 09:59

Ah yes, Maryz, see your point, hadn't thought of that.

In the interests of democracy only certain people should be allowed to vote Grin

Even if most people (assertion) on this thread are against, surely the fact that they can't be seen on all devices means that threads go wonky cos not all posts are clear, and that's not in the "spirit of the site", ref deleted posts sometimes.

reni2 · 11/12/2015 11:05

Yes, only the right sort should get a vote. Maybe weigh each vote for length of membership and number of posts. Leave the emojis to the kids.

Apart from this thread, I've only seen the odd few, and only used them myself here. Surprised they all seem to work. Why not give it a week (when the novelty has worn off) and see how often they're still being used?

RomComPhooey · 11/12/2015 17:03

Could they add a setting in the profile/account page to allow us to dissent proportionally (1 vote irrespective of n. Of usernames) to the emoji infection? (I can only apologise for last night's fruit transgression, which was akin to snogging my boss at the Xmas do. Embarrassing in the cold light of day.)

Yes I agree Exit - it's jolly poor show that Bear doesn't get a Santa hat, he should!

All i am seeing is a whole heap of bloody squares. It is bad enough on fb and other places. But if I am quite frank, what the fuck are you trying to say with your images?! a square conveys nothing. just looks like you got bored and started building a brick tower.

IF they stay then only if you can ensure that they are consistant.
However, as other forums/platforms of social media can't do this please can we just take the easy route and get rid of the damn things.

People are using them to post with meaning rather than emphasis. What they say are being lost as a result.

Maybe I'll write a patch that replaces all non-mn emojis with "I don't have a way with words" for my own enjoyment. Better than the squares or trying to interpret what a tulip means that a rose doesn't.

BewitchedBotheredandBewildered · 14/12/2015 01:34

I'm so annoyed I missed this .

I don't like the emojis, I think they look cheap and lazy.

They are the thin end of the sparkly ticker wedge.

We need to communicate in 'worms, Roxanne, worms'!
