The great emoji debate

Afternoon everyone,

So: emojis. We've had a few questions about these over the last few days. Some of you love them and some of you loathe them. The truth of the matter is that they came into being as a side-effect of a technical fix that we did; we didn't set out to introduce them (and in fact, didn't expect you to discover them quite as quickly as you did Grin). On the question of whether they stay or whether they go, it's really up to you lot. We can get rid of them again; equally, if you like having them, we're happy for them to stay. Over to you ...

LOL after every 2nd sentence as well and that's not very MN either, is it

Lol indeed ;-)

Sparklingbrook · 10/12/2015 11:20

When MumsnetLite starts I want to be in on it but not if there are emojis. I am all emojied out already.

Have an emoji topic and keep them all contained.

MarshaBrady · 10/12/2015 11:26

It's a no here. They've become irritating already. But if not then a topic where they are kept together.

CoteDAzur · 10/12/2015 11:30

Exactly, usual. MNHQ can open a "lighthearted" topic where all the huns and xxxx and the emojis can congregate and leave the rest of MN in peace.

PurpleHairAndPearls · 10/12/2015 11:50

Hmmm.

I wonder if the hatred dislike of emojis on MN is in direct proportion to the length of time MNers have been here....

I must confess I use emojis when texting, mainly in an attempt to get my teens to communicate with me . I just don't think they're right on MN, which is after all, a discussion forum, not a picture swapping forum.

I'm just waiting for "emoji" to be used as a verb and then my head will actually explode.

Fuck me I sound old.

SoupDragon · 10/12/2015 11:53

I like them in short texts but they aren't right for longer discussions like there are on MN. The current emoticons are great for just adding a sense of tone but that's all that is needed IMO.

I only skim read the Pictionary thread and that was brilliant - if there was a way to limit their use to an Emoji Topic for fun stuff like that, it would be good.

Wasn't it called "sober mumsnet" or something similar Maryz - one of the biggest misnomers going Grin

(I might have imagined that though - so far this week I have hallucinated a whole detailed conversation with DS's teacher - which didn't actually happen and has caused no end of confusion )

I have reluctantly accepted that MNing on the iPhone app is actually quite good so my old faithful MN Classic on the laptop has been abandoned.

SoupDragon · 10/12/2015 15:44

I think there was sober and workplace.

I hate them.

It's like seeing my nieces on Facebook. You want to slam them with a dictionary, it's either a misspelled word or a bloody picture. Use your big girl words!

I MN on a laptop, it makes me feel like a proper grown up. Plus I don't have one of those phones that wipes your arse and I doubt I ever will.

Plus, this picture is all that is ever needed to cover joy, fright, sadness and fear. Accept the Wogan, no substitutes.

[edit] WE HAVE AN EDIT BUTTON! It's called preview post.

DotForShort · 10/12/2015 18:00

I don't like them. The original MN ones are fine, no need to add more. Brightly coloured cutesie pictures just seem so silly to me, part of the overall dumbing down of the general culture. (No need to advertise Cadbury's either BTW, the last thing MN needs is product-placement-style advertising.) And the new emojis aren't visible to everyone, so it feels rather exclusionary to have them at all.

reni2 · 10/12/2015 18:09

Is anybody counting? HQ?

JacobFryesTopHatLackey · 10/12/2015 18:21

No get rid of the bloody things. They were tedious years ago, and they're still tedious now.

ObsidianBlackbirdMcNight · 10/12/2015 18:38

No to emojis. I like them in texts but they are out of place on mumsnet.

AntiHop · 10/12/2015 20:26

Please get rid. One of the things I like about mumsnet is the limited emojis.

Madnson · 10/12/2015 22:57

Awwww no! Save the emoji [santa]

ClancyMoped · 10/12/2015 23:27

Is anyone actually using them son any other threads apart from this one? I've seen a few used but barely any.

Lweji · 10/12/2015 23:31

My point exactly. They are available, but for the most part are being ignored.
I don't think it will change MN.

There was a pictionary thread that was quite fun clancy

I wouldn't use them on an ordinary thread in case some posters couldn't see them.

I like them. I only really use them in the same way that I use the normal mn ones though.
👍

Stratter5 · 11/12/2015 00:50

I love them , please let us have them
