My dh tried to use my iphone today to ring dss. Dh is not good with tech stuff. Somehow he managed to photograph his ear then send it to dss then when dss phoned back dh had the phone muted so he was shrieking, 'I cant hear you lad, speak up!!????

Lets move on now to something more interesting, please.

I've seen quite a few emojis appearing like that in the last couple of days, Jux.

I think the emoji thing is due to the pages not loading quickly enough and so being loaded without images. I expect the MN servers are under quite a lot of strain at the moment what with people requesting their posting histories be deleted.

Another one here who doesnt internet bank or internet shop. Had the piss taken out of me for it on a thread in AIBU once.

But one MNer who is friends with someone in the know about internet stuff told me i was doing the right thing.

I was born in the 70s and grew up in the 80s. I remember War Games One of my fave 80s films.

The first time I watched War Games I thought it was the most terrifying thing I'd ever seen.

I've just finished watching Deutschland 83, that was a big reminder of what a scary time that was.

I don't internet bank either. I knew too many people in IT. I was once laughed at by non tech people for it, that doesn't happen anymore.

Don't be complacent about bank accounts just because you're not using online banking.

A few years ago DS's account was hacked using bank details intercepted in the post (we assume - we never got to the bottom of exactly how his details got out, but a debit card and a couple of letters never arrived that should have) anyway, the hacker set up internet banking on his account using a fake email and used it to launder several hundreds of thousands of pounds. The bank wouldn't tell us what had happened, they just closed his account without consent and threatened to send bailiffs round for his card and cheque book. Being a numpty teenager he just opened an account with another bank and within a week the same thing happened. Rinse and repeat. It took two ombudsman investigations, several subject access requests and 18 months to find out what had happened.

I am now of the opinion that it's safer to set up internet banking with your passwords and your security questions, even if you never intend to use it.

MNHQ have profiles been turned off for our own safety at the moment? I'm not grumbling, just wondering

Turned off for public consumption do you mean, PlentyOf? (I can still access mine (which is empty) but I haven't attempted to edit it or save that edit etc.)

I get 'profile page not available' if I click on people's names.

If I go to my profile via the 'My Mumsnet' drop-down, I get the form page where I can change details but when I click 'view your public page' I get 'profile not available' again.

No - I'm getting the 'Not available' also. Maybe it's been turned off for a bit - I guess MNHQ will confirm?

Would be nice to get an update from MNHQ actually. They've gone a bit quiet.

They stopped people accessing them becuase the way they were set up meant hackers could use a weakness in the design to run their own script, Which stole peoples login cookies.

Meaning they could post as anyone. it's why there has been so many troll posts in the "MEN ARE BETTER THAN WOMEN" vein, they needed posts to be reported so they could log in as MNHQ.

Yeah I bet they are Simurgh very well deserved too.

Hello all, just to let you know we're around and watching the thread.

The profiles were disabled last week as a precaution while we addressed security concerns. We temporarily reinstated them at the end of the week but tests are ongoing and Tech are still working on it. There's no cause for alarm and we'll keep you updated as things progress.

As far as emoticons go - this is likely to be to do with page loading but we'll flag to tech anyway.
