Morning all,

And welcome to the new thread!
Grin

As SarahMumsnet said at the end of the last thread, we have Tech on call for fixes this weekend, and various MNHQers will be here to talk and help wherever we can.

We'll be adding to the rolling list of bugs, glitches and dislikes (see below), so please keep the feedback coming. Do remember to list which device you're using, which operating system, and which browser, so we can identify the specific issues.

Right then, who's first?

@SoonToBeSix

Also car phone warehouse moves, these ads are getting worse!

Thanks, SoonToBeSix,

We're still trying to establish if we can block these pre-emptively but for now are adding any reported moving ads to our list. Please keep us informed - we need brand names or screenshots.

When I scroll, the blue bar at the bottom (tio/active etc buttons) stretch to cover the whole screen. It takes ages to scroll down a page as i have to do it in dainty little 2cm flicks, i feel like a geisha trying to run in wanky flipflops and socks!

There aren't enough posts per screen.

They aren't clearly separated for me.

The page is too bright (I have it on half-bright and it!s blinding!).

I don't want to click the smiley icon, wait for it to load and then click the one i want. Oh, and crossing out a post with -- doesn't work.for me anymore.

What does the (I) icon next to the smiley icon do? I daren't click.it in case it takes me somewhere i don't want to go!

In the past 3 days, i've had many many pages turn off my inyernet while loading. One minute i'm loading, the next minute all the internet has gone!

I sound like a fussy nora (apologies for any Noras out there), but I don't like one bit of the new layout.

Was there a thread from MNHQ with a 'how to use the new site' guide? If there was, missed it.

iPhone 5s Safari

...and I can't post at all. It completely locks up my phone. I typed quite a lengthy post (my first on the new mobile site) with two issues I have noticed. I tried to post it and I got the circular loading graphic and then my screen went blue as if I had selected it all and was completely locked. I thought maybe it was just a glitch so I tried again with the same results.

I am on the PC now but am usually never on it (it is DH's baby). I need to be able to post on MN through my phone. What is going on?

The blue bar gets stuck over the text for me too. Also, there is nothing in the circles at the top (is there supposed to be?). And I can't see the dots in the bottom right corner, but if I press there the option box does come.

Please, please bring back the 'show all posts' option. I don't want to choose it as the default in the customise menu as then it will takes ages to load up every thread, when most of the time I'll only scan the top few posts quickly and navigate away.

IrenetheQuaint · 23/08/2014 16:08

Oh and I can't tell if my post has been posted or not. The Post button flashes briefly but my post text stays in the box and isn't added to the page unless I refresh. Really annoying.

springbabydays · 23/08/2014 16:09

Elquinto I was getting that yesterday where just clicking next page chucked me off the internet.

Sony Ericsson Xperia Arc android.

Concerned that the issue of posting then screen freezing hasn't made it onto the list of concerns. I know I'm not the only one.

Also font size doesn't seem to be on the list. Lots have mentioned too much scrolling involved so could this be added too?

I'm still having to read this through one squinty eye, due to the

The (I) changes the style of the font so you can underline or put stuff in italics easier.

ConcreteElephant · 23/08/2014 16:12

Not wading through to see if it's mentioned already, sorry - but the Chromecast ad is causing problems. When I scroll the blue bar jumps all over and it's very glitchy. No other ad has had this effect oddly. My blue bar stays put and I can scroll merrily which is handy given how much I have to scroll now ahem

springbabydays · 23/08/2014 16:18

Oops!

Due to the brightness. Need a different background. What was on the old site? I can't even remember.

Can't we return to the style/look of the old site, just add the new features to it instead?

ConcreteElephant · 23/08/2014 16:22

Everything else works fine Pipbin. I don't really like 7... Thanks for the quick reply though.

I'll think about whether I can overcome my aversion to 7 just for Mumsnet but I suspect not ;)

Hi IrenetheQuaint,

The empty circles problem cropped up a few times yesterday - it seemed to be specific to Samsung Galaxy models, but we'll add your SE Xperia to the list. If you tap on the (empty) circles, do any options show up? Such as 'Search' or 'List Topics'? Hopefully they're functioning, even if you have to use a little guesswork! Tech are working on this as we speak.

As for the missing dots/ellipses - this also seemed to be a problem for the Galaxy folk. As you say, if you jab where the dots ought to be (to the right of subject line), a drop-down menu should magically appear.

All rather unsatisfactory, admittedly, but it's on the list and will be sorted!

DawnMumsnet why is it that specific technical queries are getting answers, but people who are generally finding the site unpleasant, difficult or annoying are being ignored?

Third thread and we're still getting a cheery tone - 'you'll learn to love it, these are just teething problems!'. (I doubt it, and they're not)

It is very frustrating and more than a little patronising.

Hi springbabydays,

Thanks for flagging those issues - we'll add them to the rolling list. New one coming shortly.

Can we just take a minute to thank everyone for being so lovely and patient and reasonable today - it's very much appreciated. Thanks

Because specific technical issues can be fixed, and they are not going to change the entire site to meet the personal desires of a few shunters?

ItsAllGoingToBeFine · 23/08/2014 17:08

Shunters? WTF? Whingers.

We're sorry you feel this way, Needasilverlining.

RowanMumsnet responded to a similar question on yesterday's thread, so I'll copy in her response here:

We're really sorry you don't like it.

Obviously (well, we hope it's obvious) it was never our intention to take away something good and replace it with something crap.

Websites need to update, add some bits of functionality, re-jig menus and buttons and so on - it's how the web works. We've based the new mobile site on tests and analytics that gave us info about which functions were used most, which were under-used etc - and have tried to 'foreground' heavily-used ones.

Obviously we haven't got it completely right, but overall we're really hoping that when users have got used to the new appearance - and we've added some new functions and changed those that are really annoying people - you'll mostly find it's a cleaner, slicker, better experience.

OP posts:
Needasilverlining · 23/08/2014 17:19

I think I prefer shunter Grin

Seriously, though:

  1. It isn't just a few people
  2. If the end result of a change is that significant numbers of your users find their experience has worsened, that's a problem you should acknowledge and address. Especially if you're depending on their input to keep your brand awareness and media profile up.
  3. Honesty works - you'll get people onside much quicker by admitting there are issues. Jollying along and denial are massively irritating.
Needasilverlining · 23/08/2014 17:23

X-posted, Dawn.

I don't think for a minute that you meant to annoy users! Although God knows how your analytics were set up that they didn't think the functionality of Threads I'm On/Watching was used.

But overwhelmingly, the feedback is that this new site - even with tweaks - is worse than what it replaced. I assume you're pretty much glossing over that because you're in some waycommitted to the new one?

LadderToTheMoon · 23/08/2014 17:35

Samsung S3 mini
Android 4.1.2

(Had to go onto PC to write this...)

  • Threads, particularly longer ones, just won't load. Trying to get onto one in Chat. 150 or so messages and it won't load. Just tried one with 8 messages and that won't load either. Had same problem on and off for 24 hours.
  • The colour change when you do click a thread just isn't contrasting/dark enough to know for sure that you've actually clicked at all/clicked the right thread. Perhaps the light grey used for clicked threads could be the default background colour to reduce the glare.
  • I know this isn't a priority, but I hate the way the numbers for the number of replies in a thread snake down the page, rather than being in a neat line underneath one another. Looks very untidy.
  • Can the list of threads be alternated white/blue (or another colour) to make them easier to distinguish?

(Possibly not connected, but I went to the app yesterday. The threads seemed to be "frozen" to when I last went on the app (2013/early 2014)! Even refreshing the pages didn't bring up the most recent threads. Very bizarre indeed. I logged out and back in again. Now it has lost all of my favourite topics. When I go to the Topics list it just has a black page. Nothing is loading there either.

sunbathe · 23/08/2014 17:55

Something about it still giving me a headache, but I made the font smaller so I can see a bit more on the screen.

It's also jumpy for me between portrait and landscape viewing.

TIO takes me to posts I didn't think I'd posted on. Hmm
