Morning all,

And welcome to the new thread!
Grin

As SarahMumsnet said at the end of the last thread, we have Tech on call for fixes this weekend, and various MNHQers will be here to talk and help wherever we can.

We'll be adding to the rolling list of bugs, glitches and dislikes (see below), so please keep the feedback coming. Do remember to list which device you're using, which operating system, and which browser, so we can identify the specific issues.

Right then, who's first?

Nope. Silence is deafening.

Still struggling to understand how (presumably) professional developers managed to create a site which makes people ill! I work in a related field and have never heard of this before.

indyandlara · 11/09/2014 21:29

Are others having issues with the site logging out on iphone if you navigate away and come back?

JessicaMumsnet · 12/09/2014 11:58

Hello Needasilverlining

Sorry I didn't get back to you yesterday, here's a update.

Based on feedback about moving adverts fixed at the top on the screen making some people feel headachy we've been running an experiment in ad placement.

As you've probably noticed we've been testing putting adverts between posts.
We did this in part to try to help people who were effected by moving ads and also as a way to break up the space.

The feedback we've had on this thread has been mixed and it is an ongoing experiment but so far several people have mentioned that they don't have a problem with headaches anymore.

It's tricky because we need to keep brightness high to help those with who don't see very well but not so high as to create glare. We also need to ensure there's enough space to aid readability.

It's always going to difficult to get it perfectly right for everyone but the balance we've struck seems to now be working for most. We increased the weight of the font but didn't reduce the spacing. Now we've introduced adverts inline a few users have also commented that's helped reduce the appearance of glare for them too.

We're always listening to feedback, testing and doing our best to get it right for as many people as we can so thank you for continuing to give us your thoughts.

@MrsHathaway

Fabulous Michael Palin currently hasalovely "show op" button ... and 102 invisible posts.

HTC Desire C, Android 4.0.3, WebKit 5.

So when you say "fixed" ... ?

Grin

D'oh thanks MrsHathaway we'll take another look at HTC in particular Thanks

JessicaMumsnet · 12/09/2014 12:15

@Barbeasty

Actually I might be missing the obvious, but I can't see any button saying Find a local site. Where should it be?

And I can see something that says "Show op" at the top of threads, but it is just grey letters and in no way clickable.

I'm on a Samsung note 3, on KitKat, using the standard browser.

Barbeasty try visiting local.mumsnet.com? If you scroll to the bottom you should see it there Smile

JessicaMumsnet · 12/09/2014 12:15

MrsHathaway We can't replicate that on HTC here, is it still happening for you?

Needasilverlining · 12/09/2014 12:16

It's not the ads, it's the horrible spacing and resulting constant scrolling. But you've decided it works so obviously those of us who find it makes us queasy will have to stuck it up.

In my case, after seven years of damn near daily use, that means cutting down by more than 90 per cent. So thanks and all, but my MN warm fuzzies are at an all time low at the moment. A site I really love has been rendered unusable and the perpetrators are still trilling blithely about how great it is!

MrsHathaway · 12/09/2014 12:31

I am on laptop now but will kick phone and see what happens...

In the meantime there's yesterday's screenshot (have to upload to laptop to convert from .png to .jpg - this would all be much easier if we could upload .png directly!!)

MrsHathaway · 12/09/2014 12:32

Ah no it's working now. Maybe I tried it while Bruno was doing an update.

Thanks
Barbeasty · 12/09/2014 13:16

That works, thanks. But it's a completely different site from what links in the main menu on the mobile site!

SwedishEdith · 12/09/2014 13:58

Can't see the latest post again. It was fixed last night but is broken again

Smidge001 · 12/09/2014 14:24

I'm on iPhone 4, latest iOS (7.1.2?)
I just posted a long message on a thread which appeared to work. But came back a bit later to see if any responses and my post was missing! If I went to the 'threads I'm on button', I could see the start of my post, but when I clicked through to the thread, it wasn't there. Tried refreshing a few times and checked it hadn't moved on to a new page then gave up and wrote a short post saying how annoying it was that my long post had disappeared.... - only to discover that now I can see the long post... So I was about to write another post to say, "oh it's come back", when I realised the one saying "Gah!!! Post disappeared" is now missing!

(Again I can see it if I click on the 'I'm on' button but when I link through to the actual thread it's not there. )

Smidge001 · 12/09/2014 14:26

Ok, my latest post to say my latest post is not appearing, has itself not appeared!

Really sorry if we sounded complacent - obvs we never want to lose long-term users over something like this. We're still collecting all feedback and thinking about possible improvements.

We're struggling to reproduce this, can I check a couple of things? which reading direction have you got set? Newest at top or bottom?
Thanks

JessicaMumsnet · 12/09/2014 16:11

Hi stupidgreatgrinonmyface, the chevron button should be on the right away from the breadcrumb. Can you let us know what device you're using so we take a look?

If you're not getting on with the blue buttons they can be turned off. There's a FAQ guide here

Thanks

springbabydays · 12/09/2014 17:57

Jessica can't you just use the quote line spacing for all text? It would be a start.

springbabydays · 12/09/2014 18:00

Sorry meant to add, if that line spacing has been deemed acceptable for readability in quotes, surely must be ok for all text?

trooblood · 12/09/2014 18:07

needsasilverlining, I sympathise with you if you have specific accessibility needs which means you're in the unfortunate minority of us that need something really different from everyone else. If you suffer because of scrolling perhaps you should get a phone with a bigger screen? You said the old site wasn't a problem but it really was for some of us and it's been a huge improvement.

Long threads are always going to need a lot of scrolling. Optimal line height to ensure text readability is (at least) half the character height. I would guess not by chance here it is actually half so sounds like they followed the guidelines. If they reduced it it would not follow the guidelines and presumably be siginifcantly worse for a lot of people. Ditto making the font smaller.

BTW not sure blithely acutally means what you think it means - I don't think anybody can reasonably accuse MNHQ of being lighthearted or lacking concern about these issues.

MrsHathaway · 12/09/2014 18:18

Now no OP link and no missing posts.

FWIW I find the quoted text too close together, so I think the "half character height" rule works well for my device at least.

HTC Desire C, Android 4.0.3, WebKit 5.

Needasilverlining · 12/09/2014 18:20

Trooblood, I'm not trying to trump specific accessibility needs, of course not. I'm assuming you aren't entirely dismissing my concerns because of that?

I'm saying that I think proper user testing would have found something that (a) worked properly and (b) we could all use. Or proper customisation, or something.

And I don't want a new phone to read one site that worked perfectly fine until an ill thought out remake.

I did mean blithe, thank you. Overall I've felt the tone has been 'oops! It's fine, you'll get used to it' for anything that's not an easily fixable glitch. Generally just incredibly planned and communicated. If I sound grouchy it's because I love Mn and I miss it.

Needasilverlining · 12/09/2014 18:23

And when I say that, of course I mean that this is not a medical need. Would have spotted that did the nobbing useless preview function work...

JessicaMumsnet · 12/09/2014 18:28

@springbabydays

Jessica can't you just use the quote line spacing for all text? It would be a start.

Hello springbabydays That spacing is a compromise too and not ideal for many. That said we're still listening and considering possibilities and we are keen to try to get it right for you too. Thanks

Hi MrsHathaway Thank you for the feedback it's all useful to know. Sorry but I'm not sure I quite follow your post. Do you not have a 'Show OP' link? Are posts missing for you?
Tech have been working on that a bit today so do let us know if it's not right for you. If you could chuck in a screenshot that would be great too! Smile

Hi, thanks we're aware of the preview function. This was working but unfortunately when we changed something earlier it inadvertently seemed to break that bit. Sorry about that. We get back on it after the weekend. Thanks
