Hi all,

As you know we have launched the new mobile site, we know it's a big change and we are still very keen to get it right with your help. This is very much a version that will evolve with your help as part of the testing process.

There have been a few glitches that have/are being ironed out and the HUGE thread has nearly maxed out, so we thought it best to start a shiny new one.

We know change is tricky but, as with most things MN, we are all ears and happy to look at any feedback you have on ways we can improve the new site.

Thanks all Thanks

Active should have alternating colours now to make reading down the list easier. Unwatch thread and Hide thread should also be behaving better now. We are continuing with further changes and fixes...

Coumarin · 21/08/2014 17:17

AIBU to completely alter something which worked perfectly well before even though no one likes it, it causes health issues and looks shit?

Hmm
RebeccaMumsnet · 21/08/2014 17:18

@SilveryMoon

Right. I was going to ask who the hell were the testers? This new version is awful but I see that it is for new users. Fuck the old ones that have been here for years, let's change everything to try to bring in new users. Well thanks a lot mn

Not at all SilveryMoon, we want a site that everyone is happy with. It is very much a work in progress and we are and will continue to tweak and change as we go.

Its All, did you notice all the missing features when you tested? Did they tell you what the improvements we're meant to be? Honestly interested (as mnhq won't say).

Halsall · 21/08/2014 17:18

I'm giving it another go after hating it this morning. A bit better but not much. Still massively clunky, slow and irritating - why do I have to tap twice?

Can't see enough messages either, these fabled 3 dots that you tap don't give me the option to load, whether 1000 or not.

And the advert on the top banner is just massively irritating.

I'll be going back to the desktop site, even though I have to enlarge it to see on my iPhone.

ItsAllGoingToBeFine · 21/08/2014 17:20

Actually MNHQ - if you are collating issues the bookmark feature is still a bit buggy. Click three dots. Click bookmark. Wait. Bookmark flag appears on post and several drop down menus spawn all over screen. Nexus 7. (2013) Android. Chrome.

Add me to the list of people who have desperately looked to the site for support in the last few days and have not been able to get it. I'm dealing with serious family illness and away from an internet connection, and wanted to get to the section of the site that I'd just discovered, that looked like it would be massively useful. Confronted with a bewildering new interface that doesn't tell me when I've posted (so multiple posts), doesn't let me watch threads - is this the bookmark thing people are mentioning? - and that seems mainly designed for people to share as much stuff on social media as possible rather than do anything else. I take it too the option to post under a different username that was there on the mobile site has been removed? 'By parents for parents' - I really hoped it would help me today and it hasn't. Sad I'm typing this in a public library as it's the only way to make the site usable!

SwedishEdith · 21/08/2014 17:21

Who hated the old site?

But, yes, makes more commercial sense now- this is not actually for people who use the site already; it's for future users who have no history of mn so will be quite ok with sharing on fb and twatter - because they've no reason no to - it will be normal for them.

Annoying as I liked to read whilst I was cooking...

FlyingGoose · 21/08/2014 17:22

Logged on the main computer and now desktop site is misbehaving too, i'm off, try again tomorrow. Finger's crossed!

Needasilverlining · 21/08/2014 17:24

Are you going to bring back being able to see the newest posts in TIO/W? That's the worst change of the whole shambles.

It'll prob be good for me in the long run... I need to find out more about social media and maybe even talk to my kids more anyway.

FamiliesShareGerms · 21/08/2014 17:24

I loathe loathe loathe the new site, sorry

MrsVamos · 21/08/2014 17:25

Quite, SwedishEdith

And the answer to those of us who aren't and don't want to be on Fb and twatter ?

Don't use MN I guess.

Coumarin · 21/08/2014 17:25

That bloody advert!

I'd say get rid of but I suspect it's the sole reason for this change.

Like peering through a letterbox into a hospital waiting room.

Why did you ask lurkers and those who rarely post? Why not ask those who use the site the most? I ask that as someone who lurked for a very very long time.

SwedishEdith · 21/08/2014 17:25

So, ItsAll - do you not use Threads I'm On then? How come you missed the problems there?

ItsAllGoingToBeFine · 21/08/2014 17:26

My observations (not Mumsnet). An awful lot of people moaned about old mobile site. MNHQ was constantly testing as placement - I site this large is really expensive to run - they need ad revenue - look at any other similar site and they will have a lot more ads than Mumsnet.

When I tested it looked fairly similar to this - it was a while go - was asked things like should floating ad go at top or at bottom.

It would have been simpler for MNHQ if they had done a staged rollout but can't really do that with websites. They do seem to be fixing stuff incredibly quickly now.

2 points: many people don't like change, and don't have any real issues
Millions of people use MN - there is no way they could have tested for every possible combination of device/browser/extensions etc

ItsAllGoingToBeFine · 21/08/2014 17:29

I do use threads I'm on and I very slightly miss the old previews of replies, but I also think the new way showing number of new posts looks far nearer and slicker (although the numbering system is still a tad buggy)

(I mostly use TIO and Active)

ItsAllGoingToBeFine · 21/08/2014 17:31

Oh, and sorry ShamTech - if we're being picky, I don't like the new stripes on Active, much nicer the way it was

BigArea · 21/08/2014 17:31

LittleBearPad I love you! I now have a bookmark button when on my laptop Grin Thanks I had never scrolled down to look at the options as someone once told me it was just there if you were on the 'new' version Blush

SoonToBeSix · 21/08/2014 17:32

Mrs vamas yes but I have been patient. I am not asking for it to be fixed instantly just to answer the question are you actually going to change the things I mentioned and what will you do specifically.

emotionsecho · 21/08/2014 17:33

Ok, I'll add my two penn'orth and I am afraid I am joining the increasing majority of people who think the new mobile site is just totally and utterly awful.

The old mobile site was clearer, easier to navigate, looked professional, simple to use, and quicker.

The new site looks amateurish, rather like something from the early 90's when website design was in its infancy. It all merges into one mass, it is difficult to differentiate between the threads and the topics they are in on the Active Convos list, on the threads themselves all the posts and posters names blend into one mass, it is harder to navigate, the onus is on the user, rather than the site owner, to attempt to customise it to make it easier for them to use, it is now more long winded and difficult to navigate, so much so that no doubt, like me, people just give up, log off and leave it.

The flickering advert is so damn distracting and irritating.

It looks cheap and nasty.

Again, I join the chorus of those asking for a return to to old format, really for the sake of a few drop down emoticons the current version just isn't worth it.

If this is Mumsnet's mobile shop window to the world I don't think you are selling the site very well, as a new user I would look at it, think cheap, tacky and nasty and go somewhere else.

Needasilverlining · 21/08/2014 17:34

Yes, the number is neater but misleading, and you can't go direct to that point on a thread so it's a major loss of function.

And it sounds like the testing was 'do you want Shit Option A based on Stuff We Reckon or Shit Option V Ditto' rather than a proper evaluation of needs, user journeys etc.

ItsAllGoingToBeFine · 21/08/2014 17:34

But that is just a matter of taste - I much prefer it...

JuniperTisane · 21/08/2014 17:35

Thanks, the alternating colours on Active like it was before is much better. Much easier to differentiate.

DHandhisgrossfoot · 21/08/2014 17:35

Can you change the font on Active Convos, it's still causing headaches. Sad

The old site was warm and comforting, this new one is cold and unwelcoming.

ItsAllGoingToBeFine · 21/08/2014 17:36

Yes, the number is neater but misleading, and you can't go direct to that point on a thread so it's a major loss of function.

But surely you just click on the thread and it takes you to your bookmarked post from last time you were there. What's the issue Confused
