Official Mumsnet mobile thread numéro deux

Hi all,

As you know we have launched the new mobile site, we know it's a big change and we are still very keen to get it right with your help. This is very much a version that will evolve with your help as part of the testing process.

There have been a few glitches that have/are being ironed out and the HUGE thread has nearly maxed out, so we thought it best to start a shiny new one.

We know change is tricky but, as with most things MN, we are all ears and happy to look at any feedback you have on ways we can improve the new site.

Thanks all Thanks

Rats, ElBandito.

I think that is what we will be asked tonight. To be patient so that 'they' can sort more things out tomorrow.

It's half 3 now. I never got a reply asking if Tech were working late tonight, and after tomorrow it's the weekend.

I think so much was wrong, it was released live far too early and they are now trying frantically to put it all into place.

Would have been far better to have stopped, put old site back up and started again.

I would still like to know just how crap the other options were if what was released was the best !

And I still want to know why it needed changing ?

And, and, (whining again) who besides one that I know of, were the testers ? Did it not occur to any of them to ask why it needed changing ?

If it has been done to suit and 'fit' with FB and Twatter I shall be cross.

If I wanted to use either of those sites, that don't let you use complete anonimity like mumsnet does, I would. I don't , and I won't.

Grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr.

Just to echo silverlining Smile. Seriously, though...

The whole thing just seems so unnecessary

Gawd, I hope not. Sad

Just shows then if thats the case that as I have seen mentioned, mnet is becoming much more a commercial business and advertising site that it is 'by parents for parents'.

What a crock.

I'm definitely logged in.
Oh well. I'll wait & hopefully one day will be able to bookmark. Suppose it's not the end of the world if I can't.
Is there going to be a new Talk app? The old one is horrid, although it's less horrid than it used to be.

Getting used to the new site now, I am still having trouble when trying to zoom in on an image though. I know you've tweaked it so you can click to enlarge an image, but it doesn't enlarge much, and zooming in seems to push the image out of my screen's field of view (I'm using a Galaxy Note 2).

Also, the Reddit App has options to select a theme, 'light' or 'dark'. Is this possible on Mumsnet? So people who prefer reading white text on a dark background can switch?

To comment on RebeccaMumsnet's post from the previous huge thread:
In Tech speak
On most of the new mobile talk pages, google is now showing a score of 100/100 for mobile usability.

Which we're reliably told is to do with best practice on 'Tap targets' and 'legible fonts' and 'size content to viewport'

Usability in that context is in terms of how usable the site is on a mobile. It may well be "usable" from a purely layout point of view (preventing fat fingers). This usability has had the effect of reducing functionality, though, which is thus making for a poorer user experience at the expense of improving technical usability.

It might be worth pointing your tech guys at this seminal book on web user experience... : Don't Make Me Think by Steve Crug (hopefully they already have a copy - "hallway usability testing", anyone...?)

BigArea

That's a pain.

That was the only thing I liked about the new site, the smileys.

Would like that on desktop actually.

Why can't the colour options be what we set it ourselves in our account, like on the desk top? Why has it had to change ???

Report
ophiotaurus · 21/08/2014 15:55

I saw mentioned that they "had no choice" to release it yesterday. This leads me to believe that they've signed an advertising contract stating the new site will be up and running on X date which means if they hadn't released it, they'd be in breach of contract.

The fact they aren't answering why speaks volumes. It's to do with advertising.

Report
Tinkerball · 21/08/2014 15:56

They will have no-one left to read the adverts at this rate!

MrsVamos - Bathrooms have locks?! Who knew! Grin

I just want colour to break up this awful white, be able to actually hide my posts stupid button doesn't work, and see recents posts on TIO and I'll be able to tolerate it.

But MN needs to learn how to better plan things and have more than 2 staff on. It's also Bank Hol on Monday so I doubt much will be done then either...

Rebecca the advert at the top keeps flicking I cannot use a site with a constantly changing advert at the top. I would rather pay to get rid if it. Please can we get rid of the top advert.

No bookmark option on the S3, I'm glad flip this thread is now available and that you are working on the slow loading.

Having read that some of the 'glitches ' have been fixed, I thought I would give it another chance and just tried again. I unfortunately I found it is still taking a ridiculous amount of time to load a page - I gave up after five minutes and returned to the desktop site.
Sorry MN, I really don't understand why you needed to do a complete redesign in order to fix a couple of minor problems. You have succeeded in making the mobile site unusable for me and as I do over 90% of my MNing on my phone, I will be spending much less time on here in future. The desktop site works passably well on my phone, but not well enough for me to use it with anything like the same frequency as I do now.

Imo, in trying to make it 'better', you have actually succeeded in making it so bad as to be unusable for many users and you seem determined not to listen to the many who are asking for the option of a classic version. You may be 'completely' sure we will all grow to love it, I can assure you that many of us won't.

I've just made my own no so technical fix and solved the problem of the constantly changing ad at the top of my screen by cutting a Post It note to the correct width and sticking it to the top of my tablet and folding it over the offending area. Grin
I haven't dared stick it directly to the screen yet in case it damages it, but that would give an even better solution. Perhaps MNHQ could look to develop a range of non sticky ad blockers to go with their other merchandise.
Not sure what I can bodge together to make the colour better though.Confused I'm happy to try almost any suggestions.

The blue toolbar at the bottom is driving me crackers on the iPhone - if I hit Active, the phone thinks I want to bring up the iPhone browser toolbar. Is there a way to hide or minimise the blue toolbar? It also eats into the reading space.

Oh, and another vote for the ability to highlight all the OP's posts.

Apart from that, I quite like it...

No choice ? Even though its run 'by parents for parents' ?

Cynical ol me. Hmm

I'm not surprised by the lack of response from the main stays of mn. I expect some are still on their holidays, and I expect some just don't give a shit.

As others have said, I would have rather paid an annual fee to use MN rather than all this advertising.

MultipleMama

The white is still really bad is it ? I haven't checked and the lack of response about when its all likely to be sorted kind of put me off keep checking. I've wasted battery as it is !

Oh feck, of course, it's Bank Hol coming up isn't it.

Cue shitty weekend on MN with troublemakers and trolls. Maybe I should pretend I am going on holiday and return in November, in time for all the Christmas trouble. Grin

Am using the desktop version for now

Will not be around much longer if I have to continue using this format though Sad
