Hi all,

As you know we have launched the new mobile site, we know it's a big change and we are still very keen to get it right with your help. This is very much a version that will evolve with your help as part of the testing process.

There have been a few glitches that have/are being ironed out and the HUGE thread has nearly maxed out, so we thought it best to start a shiny new one.

We know change is tricky but, as with most things MN, we are all ears and happy to look at any feedback you have on ways we can improve the new site.

Thanks all Thanks

Like crispandfruity I have really tried with the new mobile site today but it's still not working for me :(

Out of sheer desperation I have resorted to manually flipping the postnatal thread I lurk on (900+ posts).

Still having to post from DH iPad on the desktop site, with the added drawback that he now realises just how much time I spend browsing MN in the evening Hmm

eachpeachbarebum · 21/08/2014 23:16

But Helen you are talking about fixing, yet again dodging the main point that loads of users simply aren't happy with it, for very valid reasons. What a complete balls up.
This is more about keeping advertisers happy over the users that make it what it is.
I too am very disillusioned with mumsnet. I have mainly lurked but it has helped me through some difficult times. It felt like a friendly, cosy chat. This site now feels like most of the other crap I have to deal with in rl. It used to be a refuge from it all. sadly no more.
If you were looking to completely change your reputation and profile, well done. At least be straight with us.

Coumarin · 21/08/2014 23:16

The customise bit has been moved since earlier today. Where would I find that please? And is there the option to turn on bookmarking there?

TobyZiegler · 21/08/2014 23:16

Actually I read earlier a MN post to say that they changed it to make it more accessible to newbies... But if we can't navigate it, how on earth will a newbie. Newbies often lurk at first before posting, lurking isn't straight forward anymore because of TIO and bookmarking and flipping and seeing new posts to threads. I really don't think this is benefitting anyone.

Anyway. I give up for tonight. I'm off to Pinterest instead. :(

LittleBearPad · 21/08/2014 23:18

You need to turn on bookmarking on the desktop site. Although mine was switched on already on desktop so just worked on the mobile site.

Coumarin · 21/08/2014 23:18

this is more like the attempted partnership with the Daily Mail...

Er, what?? ShockHmm clearly before my time.

LittleBearPad · 21/08/2014 23:20

Customise is under the button with a bottom arrow.

Coumarin · 21/08/2014 23:21

Ok I can't find anything so I'll withdraw my shock horror face.

Did find MN wiki page though and had a snigger at the bit at the top...

Thank you Littlebear I completely missed the tiny arrow icon.

rockpink · 21/08/2014 23:24

Can we just lose the horrible intrusive advert at the top. I'd be ok (not happy but ok) with the rest of the site then.

Coumarin · 21/08/2014 23:26

The ad is my main gripe now too.

eachpeachbarebum · 21/08/2014 23:27

and why have I got an advert for talktalk flashing all over my screen for a deal that expired on 7 August?!
If you are going to monopolise half my screen with hard sell at least get them right.

TeenyfTroon · 21/08/2014 23:30

Now draw a thicker line between posts and make the poster's name sit a bit closer to the post. So it looks as if it belongs. And tell me what's been happening on the threads I usually follow cos I've done nothing but trawl through this one since the great reveal. Or the BIG SHOCK as it was for most of us.
Oh, and how much do you want me to send to get rid of THE BLOODY ADVERT?
Just seen above post - it is cold and unwelcoming.

Coumarin · 21/08/2014 23:30

Ok I was about to stfu but just realised all my hidden threads are now listed on 'threads I'm on'.

Seriously. Do I have to go back through them to rehide them? That's ridiculous!

I'm out.

ilovesooty · 21/08/2014 23:42

Can we just lose the horrible intrusive advert at the top

Doubt it. That's where the money comes from, I expect. It's probably central to the redesign.

LineRunner · 21/08/2014 23:51

The advert at the top, especially when it moves, is headache-inducing.

The whole mobile site is a massive glaring disaster.

Giraffeski · 21/08/2014 23:56

I am a lot happier now I can flip threads, but I would like to request that the OPs posts are highlighted in either the colour of our choice as before, or a higher contrast as it's really difficult to differentiate between the colours.

Horsemad · 21/08/2014 23:57

Just one big mess! I dread to think how much has been spent on this ridiculous 'effort'.

Its a shame really. I did love MN. I found it following the birth of 2nd dc years ago, and I loved the fact that there was lots of people here talking about other stuff as well as children. I've picked up amazing snippets of information that I would never otherwise have known, and in many ways, with young children at home, it was a bit of a lifeline for me. Always someone to chat to, a bit of sanity and the voice of reason from many people.

But it doesn't feel like that now. Its not in real time any more. Not in the same way. And I don't like it. And find its not really worth the effort to struggle to use it. Especially as the new layout seems to give me a headache. I can adapt to change normally, but these changes feel like a huge step back, not something new and exciting to embrace. I don't really understand why you have changed it to this degree mnhq. Surely there was something you could do with the old site to ramp up your advertising if thats what you needed. But it seems like you don't really care that much about the people who use your site right now. Thats fair enough, its your site, you do whatever you want with it to take it forward however you see fit.

But it doesn't work for me like this and I can't really see how thats going to change. Which doesn't matter. I'm just one person in the whole scheme of it all.

But I'm out now. I can't use it how I want to, and I can't be bothered trying anymore. So, best of luck to you with the site, hope you get where you want to go with it.
And bye to lots of the amazing people on here that might not recognize me under this user name, but possibly would under past names.

Be lucky. Its been real Wink

HauntedNoddyCar · 22/08/2014 00:10

My major technical gripe now is that when I hit post now, apparently nothing happens.
If I scroll to the top of the page there is a 'progress' circle.
If I wait 30 minutes then it's still there. I can't click on TIO to check it's worked.
If I go to my phone's bookmarks to TIO then I know it worked.
Things have improved since last night but not handling posts properly on some platforms is pretty fundamental.

LittleBearPad · 22/08/2014 00:10

Don't you think that's a bit of an overreaction Zebra. The new version gas been running for about 30 hours and it's already a lot better than it was yesterday afternoon.

Pipbin · 22/08/2014 00:24

Yet I was told I was being dramatic saying that people are being dramatic and leaving.

Anyone would think they have changed the Radio 4 schedule or the Doctor Tardis

LineRunner · 22/08/2014 01:02

People may as well leave if they can't use the site or trying to read it gives them a headache.

MiscellaneousAssortment · 22/08/2014 01:27

I suspect the changes weren't meant to sacrifice the user experience to the will of advertisers, it just feels like it because they haven't got it right.

The old version doesn't look as beautiful or polished or quite up to date with other sites. I'm sure that was part of the brief. However instead of following slavishly trends in fonts, white spaces, usability etc, they would do well to read emerging reports that it's harder to read such 'slick and skim-able' sites, and the ability to engage with content or even retain information from these interfaces is lower. A case of beauty really coming before usability or just basic humanity. This site in particular is all about the user interaction and cannot slide by on pretty superficiality.
