Hi all,

As you know we have launched the new mobile site, we know it's a big change and we are still very keen to get it right with your help. This is very much a version that will evolve with your help as part of the testing process.

There have been a few glitches that have/are being ironed out and the HUGE thread has nearly maxed out, so we thought it best to start a shiny new one.

We know change is tricky but, as with most things MN, we are all ears and happy to look at any feedback you have on ways we can improve the new site.

Thanks all Thanks

Thanks ophio. Does it look like that to others too? Surely it's even more of a risk to share to social media when the buttons don't even say what they are?!

EleanorAbernathy · 21/08/2014 22:18

I have finally worked out screenshots, and here's what it looks like for me (HTC Desire) - I think I have bits missing? I still can't find the customise option. I think the squares at the bottom are the social media links but again with bits missing?

crispandfruity · 21/08/2014 22:20

I cant even remember what the old mobile site looked like - but I love it still Sad

nickelbabe · 21/08/2014 22:21

I don't see the point of floating adverts, really.

I just came to this page, at the top of the page, saw an advert, thought "ooh" clicked on it. done.

haven't had that desire to see the same advert then still following me down the page!

EleanorAbernathy · 21/08/2014 22:21

oooops sorry for the multiple post - I didn't think it had worked! And it doesnt look like it attached my screenshot or my smiley.....

DottyDot · 21/08/2014 22:23

Right - I'm trying to use it but it freezes (iPhone 4S) when I press 'add post' and I really don't understand why anyone thought it was a good idea to only have a teeny tiny bit of screen to see actual posts? That's driving me BONKERS.

Come on MN - you gave us MN Classic when we had kittens over the last makeover, please give us a classic app version.....

MultipleMama · 21/08/2014 22:24

so nice to be on my laptop and see the old MN. I want the old mobile one back :(

LittleBearPad · 21/08/2014 22:25

Something that is surprising me is how many people use page views rather than all on one page. I always have 1000 posts to a page selected because I load threads to read on trains. What's the benefit of pages?

EleanorAbernathy · 21/08/2014 22:26

Nope I still can't get it to work (on laptop again now!) - looks like I'll have to start studying instead of MNing in my free time! Wink

nickelbabe · 21/08/2014 22:29

pages is better for those who have slow loading devices. all-on-one-page takes aaaaaaaaages to load.

crispandfruity · 21/08/2014 22:31

I've tried this evening. I've learned how to use it, I appreciate the fixes carried out today but the new mobile site is awful.

It's not comfortable to use and it looks horrid.

It's not a case of getting used to it either, it's not like it's an improvement or an upgrade to existing features. It is WORSE, way worse than the previous mobile site.

It's like improving a gin and tonic and substituting the gin with lager. A really unpleasant surprise that you might be polite about initially but would never ask for again.

I know people have worked hard on this but it's rubbish. Apart from the glitches it looks shit. The arrow in the circle is just so 1998. As are the topic headings.

Someone should put their hands up about this. Yes, it's a free site but it's our use of it that has monetised it.

My not using this won't mean anything to MNHQ, or anyone. But it's sad that our preferences as a group have not been acknowledged - and after all WE are the community that makes the site viable.

Lweji · 21/08/2014 22:32

Since you are at it could you:

a) make a "Mobile site" button to switch back to it in case we mistakenly hit the "Desktop site" link?

b) Click to un-bookmark a specific thread?

Lweji · 21/08/2014 22:37

pages is better for those who have slow loading devices. all-on-one-page takes aaaaaaaaages to load.

It used to be fine (mostly) on the old version of the mobile site. Not now. :(

Halfpastthelegofmyshirt · 21/08/2014 22:46

I hate it. It hurts my eyes. I even downloaded the app and now I've remembered how much I hate that too.

I used to read the Guardian newspaper on their app all the time until they fucked up the formatting so badly that I deleted it.

The old design was simple and wasn't painful to read. Please bring it back!

WhistlingPot · 21/08/2014 22:46

Sorry not rtft so don't know if already mentioned but does anyone else occasionally zoom on a touch screen to enlarge links etc? I do this a lot and it is most annoying that now, the blue icons at the bottom and the ad at the top enlarge to such an extent they cover the entire screen?

I would imagine v frustrating for those hard of sight who zoom to increase font size.....

crispandfruity · 21/08/2014 22:47

The fixes will not make the new mobile site as user friendly as the old one. The old one was great. Upgrading should not mean throwing away the template. It should be in the users interests not the advertisers. I feel that this upgrade is in the interest of advertisers.

crispandfruity · 21/08/2014 22:50

And everytime I see the >talk >site stuff and that horrid arrow circle I feel annoyed! It looks so sixth form retake. Who on earth approved that?

themightyfandango · 21/08/2014 22:52

I'm finding it fine today now I can flip threads and posts are highlighted again. I wasn't so keen at first, think it was the sudden shock of things being different mid thread Grin. I'm getting fairly into it tonight although I don't have any functionality issues like some posters ( using Galaxy S5).
I've learned from bitter experience that any sort of change I usually dislike for about 24hrs before coming to terms with it! Blush

Babychumbles · 21/08/2014 22:56

I hate it! Please can we just go back to what we had before. It's really hard to read now- less space for reading actual text which is what we are here for. The ads are really annoying and the social media share shite and the nav bar along the bottom all encroach on space. The font is too fine. I really can't be doing with it. Sorry to sound ungrateful as I am sure many mumsnet dollars have been spent on this but please could we just revert?

riverboat1 · 21/08/2014 22:58

Pipbin - thanks for your tip about selecting bookmarking from desktop customisation menu, you've solved that problem for me!

ilovesooty · 21/08/2014 22:59

I feel that this upgrade is in the interest of advertisers

Absolutely. And it was immediately apparent when we were told we'd all learn to love it.

I don't think they give a shit what most of the users think.

And if we don't learn to love it I suspect their next move will be to ffer apaid subscription to a much better and more functional site without all the adverts. Those who don't want to pay will have to put up and shut up.

I'm afraid that over the last couple of weeks I've lost faith in MNHQ's honesty, integrity or any notion that they care about the community who use the site. It was appalling that they passed off the problems with the layout recently as a tech glitch when it appears they were testing the changes.

Coumarin · 21/08/2014 23:03

Back to check.

It's mildly better. Glad the 'first' 'last' options are at the top again. It seems to be slightly more readable.

Still very irritated by the bleedin advert strip at the top of the page. Angry

YetAnotherHelenMumsnet · 21/08/2014 23:04

Hi all again,
Thanks again for your forbearance, it is much appreciated. We WILL fix this, you know we will, but it is frustrating to have to leave you all disappointed over night, as we know that's when a lot of you get time to post. We're genuinely sorry, and rest assured we totally, totally give a shit about all of the users. Without you, we're out of a job.
Many apologies again.

TobyZiegler · 21/08/2014 23:06

Oh dear I've been trying, I really have. I'm getting more familiar with bits but I just don't like it. It's not user friendly, not slick and there's too much SCROLLING! It really isn't an improvement in design. I've tried. I only ever MN from my iPhone and now that's been spoiled for me. I can honestly see myself slowly giving up on MN completely.

MiscellaneousAssortment · 21/08/2014 23:07

And ahhhhh, sigh of relief, I've just switched back to the desktop version after trying to bear with it for the last 24 hrs, I just couldn't. Ghastly, had no way to orient self on the page, had to really try to read anything, and the glare / headaches/ eye strain were just rubbish. I didn't realise how much it was hurting until I switched, and I physically felt eye muscles relaxing again - very peculiar sensation, as I'd not felt those muscles before.

I think MN should be furious with the design company who've obviously been over extending themselves in terms of expertise.

Thank goodness I can still access the desktop site.
