Hi all,

As you know we have launched the new mobile site, we know it's a big change and we are still very keen to get it right with your help. This is very much a version that will evolve with your help as part of the testing process.

There have been a few glitches that have/are being ironed out and the HUGE thread has nearly maxed out, so we thought it best to start a shiny new one.

We know change is tricky but, as with most things MN, we are all ears and happy to look at any feedback you have on ways we can improve the new site.

Thanks all Thanks

I appreciate that MNHQ and Tech people are probably going hell for leather to address the issues raised, but a bit of communication would be nice.

MardyBra · 21/08/2014 18:59

I can lend you a torch if you're thinking of going in crisp [helpful]

crispandfruity · 21/08/2014 19:00

mardy last nights mobile site glare would have been well handy in Hollister.

At the risk of repeating it - is there a(n easy and quick) fix to make the titles if threads that have already been clicked on a different colour?

I don't really use the bookmark and even if I did it wouldn't serve as a reminder for threads I'm not interested in. I don't really want to have to hide everything Smile

Pipbin · 21/08/2014 19:02

On the iPhone the empty circle has a paperclip in it.

Also - people complaining, I understand that you are upset, and there was little wrong with the old site. However, please understand that they have to try and make this work on every single mobile phone that has online access. That is a lot of phones and tablets each with their own difficulties. Making a website that works on all phones is damn near impossible. It is very likely that they weren't able to check it on the phone that you are using running the OS you are using.

Remember, you don't pay to use this. Have a little patience please.

MardyBra · 21/08/2014 19:05

"Making a website that works on all phones is damn near impossible."

Which is why it should be adequately tested before launch.

"Remember, you don't pay to use this. Have a little patience please."

As far as I can see, nobody is being mean or abusive. And whilst there is no subscription, MN does make money out of our usage. We get that and don't mind. As long as there is a balance.

This may have been said already but to be able to bookmark you need to have bookmarking enabled on the desktop site. To to that you need to go to customise - top left, then scroll down to where it says 'show bookmark' and select 'yes'

Thanks Pipbin.
Now that I have turned on bookmarks (never used them before) I can also see Unwatch this thread (which I used all the time before).

So to Unwatch you must have bookmarks enabled. I don't see why that should be the case.

cungryhatterpillar · 21/08/2014 19:10

Arrrgghh. I can't post I can't lurk I can't have a quick browse. Just give us the old site back for an hour a day, please. Otherwise we'll start thread numero trois in flouncers corner and go somewhere else more usable.

emotionsecho · 21/08/2014 19:12

Pipbin the old site did seem to work fine on a myriad of mobile devices judging by the comments on the new site - so why the necessity for change to a format that is making it so difficult for all those who used it without any problems?

If there were issues with the old site on newer devices, why not have a mobile site compatible with those devices and the old site for those whose devices work better with the old site?

My tablet is new all singing and dancing and yet the new mobile site is crap on it.

cungryhatterpillar · 21/08/2014 19:12

And if I try to zoom in on a picture the top and bottom bars zoom too leaving me a teeny patch of screen vthe size of a postage stamp

MiscellaneousAssortment · 21/08/2014 19:12

Yes! First previous next last is at the top again. RSI prevented (somewhat).

Now, glare and highlighting need addressing. I wonder why the designers didn't design for actual humans? I thought it was pretty much standard to spare a thought for effect on us mere mortals made out of actual human flesh. Eyes & migraines, epilesy, etc all blithely ignored. I wouldn't be publicizing this site on their client page - unless they like to show how they only design for people in perfect health?

I suspect there's not a cat in hell's chance MN will reinstate the old version, as they'll have invested too much to backtrack now.

I'd be fascinated to know if there would be a equally loud backlash if they did reinstate. It would be fascinating to find out - but I suspect MN aren't going to experiment!

BigArea · 21/08/2014 19:12

Thanks ItsAllGoingToBeFine Thanks

ItsAllGoingToBeFine · 21/08/2014 19:13

Don't zoom in on a picture by zooming in on your screen - click in the picture and it will pop out full size.

MrsVamos · 21/08/2014 19:14

KateBeckett

(((hugs))) I do hope that HQ and Tech can work something out so that it is better for you.

I felt crappy enough, but as I said, my condition is 'manageable' in that I can get off MN and hopefully feel better. If I am going to fit, nothing will stop it, of course, but if I recognise signs I can hopefully lessen the chance of a bad one.

I just felt terrible for you that all this change for the good made you instantly feel awful. There's no excuse and no need for that as far as I am concerned.

Maryz

I'm assuming that once you have read the thread/s you will realise I'm not just being a whinger for whingings sake and have tried ALL DAY to help to get the mobile site running well for everyone.

I know that for me that's perhaps a bit unusual....do I really come here and whinge/whine/moan that much ? Oh feck. Wink

Pipbin · 21/08/2014 19:14

Which is why it should be adequately tested before launch.

I agree, but, there are simply not the hours in the day to test a website on every single phone and every single variant of the OS that people may be running.

And some people are being rather dramatic announcing that it is awful, unusable and that they are leaving.

nickelbabe · 21/08/2014 19:19

or if you're not goingbto give us a preview, then at least open the thread at the latest post from tio instead of first post.

PseudoBadger · 21/08/2014 19:20

Can I post?

PseudoBadger · 21/08/2014 19:20

Well at least that is fixed!

ItsAllGoingToBeFine · 21/08/2014 19:22

or if you're not goingbto give us a preview, then at least open the thread at the latest post from tio instead of first post.

If you bookmark the last post in the thread, then when you go back there, via TIO or otherwise, it will take you to your bookmarked post.

Needasilverlining · 21/08/2014 19:24

Pipbin, there should have been time to test it better than this. An enormous amount of people are reporting problems with a wide variety of systems. Which is why it might have been sensible to test a site with a million users on, oooh, more than 80 people, half of whom haven't got a clue what already works and thus what improvements would look like.

And it's a bit dramatic to say that people who decide a new version of a website is shit and they won't be using it any more are being dramatic Grin. I don't get much leisure time and I don't want to spend it on things that annoy me. So I will need to find something that doesn't. A shame, but there you go.

Needasilverlining · 21/08/2014 19:27

And ItsAll, again: you used to click on the latest post and go right there. Now you have toremember to set/reset the bookmark on reading, every time. So quick and convenient and intuitive has been replaced by slow and needing more from the user. Which is a bit weird considering is meant to be a 'new and improved' site.

TheBogQueen · 21/08/2014 19:27

I feel like I am peering through a letterbox to look at posts.

and it's really hard to get a sense of the thread

I like the rest of it - it's just the actual thread is obscured by the massive ad bar at the top and massive buttons at the bottom.

I'm on an iPhone 5

MrsVamos · 21/08/2014 19:27

Pipbin

Some posters have epilepsy (including me) and mentioned this morning that the white glare was making us feel funny, and that others had had headaches last night trying to use the site.

For others it was/is the flickering on screen.

Some posters have said they are dyslexic and have said that the colour was too harsh for them to be able to follow text easily, among other things.

Others have said they suffer bad migraines and the site was affecting them.

I am sure there are other posters I may have missed out, for who this morning and for a lot of today, the new site has been awful and unusable.

Please also consider that some mnetters may only post via a mobile or a tablet so may not have an option to use desktop as it is inherently difficult to use from what I understand on some mobile devices.

I don't think people are being dramatic by then saying that if certain issues cannot be remedied then they are leaving.

I feel deeply sorry that we may have lost some loved, invaluable and helpful posters due to the shoddy roll out of this new site.
