Site Improvements I'd love to see... part 2

Excuse me for i have sinned , Yes I am a subscriber to another site like this , but it is dedicated to Disney nutters like myself. I thought I would pass on some of the stuff that is useful on there which would be great on here.

BTW I love coming here more!!!!

  1. The name of who started the thread
  2. Online photo gallery of mumsnetters ( possibly conflicts with anonymity may need more thinking)
  3. Personalised online signatures with emoticons or pictures

Thats it for now

Would anyone like a link to the DisneyWorld chat board ??

Oh no no no please not those silly signatures, they make the whole thing unreadable.

I must say one of the things I love about mumsnet is the simplicity of the threads. I tried to use another site lately (which shall be nameless!!!) and I just couldn't stand all those stupid jumping emoticons and bits of cod psychology masquerading as signatures on every thread. Made the whole thing unreadable, you could only get 5 posts to a page and tbh I don't have time to sit there scrolling through page after page to read one thread.

As for 1), you can see that by looking at the first post!

Don't care about 2) but not for me.

One thing I would quite like (and feel free to shoot me down of course) is the facility to see who is online at the moment. The only downside I can see is you might think there are none of your regular posting "mates" online and not bother which means you don't meet new posters (not that I would do that).

What is the DisneyWorld chat board Melsy?

WideWebWitch · 24/03/2004 09:54

No thanks to the Disneyworld chat but thanks for the offer I wouldn't like any of those things but you can very easily see who started a thread anyway by flipping it or scrolling down to the beginning. Oh, just read cd's post and she's said that. I wouldn't put my photo up although I'm sure others would like it and I agree with cd re other emoticons and jumping signatures, it would put me off and I don't want it.

Furball · 24/03/2004 09:55

Or even, how many are logged on at anyone time.

WideWebWitch · 24/03/2004 09:57

Nah, I don't want that either. In fact I'd be put off if my name appeared whenever I was logged on. I don't see what difference it makes how many people are logged on - if they want to post, they'll post. And you don't have to be a member to read mumsnet do you so it could be millions potentially!

CountessDracula · 24/03/2004 09:58

Ah very true. Forget it then!

spacemonkey · 24/03/2004 10:00

I like to be able to lurk when I want to so no thanks to the "who's online" list!

I have to agree with the others - one of the things that makes mumsnet so great is its simplicity. I like the lack of bells and whistles.

melsy · 24/03/2004 10:01

Unfortunately CD it has all the silly stuff you were talking about. You are totally right CD, may be a signature should be limited to one line only. I was just getting sentimental on the Disney one this morning. I agree it does take up too much space !!!

With regards to seeing names it was more about seeing them in the active conversations window. But Wouldnt want to influence cliquness (word/sp??!!), also like meeting new people.

SoupDragon · 24/03/2004 10:05

Nonononono to the online signaures with pictures!! I despise them! They break up the flow of the thread and are usually full of airy fairy cr*p I don't want to know.

I'd like more emoticons but not the animated ones as they're quite distracting. I agree about the the simplicity and clean lines of MN. I did look at Another Site but was really put off with the jumping about emoticons, the crude emoticons and the signature lines/avatars.

SoupDragon · 24/03/2004 10:13

Maybe it would be nice to have a "profile" page for yourself where you can include a picture, something abut yourself/your family and links to your own website. You wouldn't need to put all your details in but it would be nice to be able to check, for example, what age children someone has or where in the contry they are.

dinosaur · 24/03/2004 10:19

Can I just add my voice to those who DON'T want online signatures. Can we also NOT have those stupid emoticons that jump up and down, wave etc as they really get on my tits. I really like mumsnet the way it is now. One of the autism boards I used to post on has been ruined by moving to the new format (as used by mumsonline) and I find it so hard to use now that I don't bother with it any more.

CountessDracula · 24/03/2004 10:19

Melsy, why do you go on a site about Disney (just out of curiosity!) do you work for them?

spacemonkey · 24/03/2004 10:21

I like the idea of the profile page too.

mothernature · 24/03/2004 10:31

I would dearly like to post pictures on this site, but only in context with any conversation, i.e the weather, its snowing here look.. and anything that when you post 'look at this picture' so you can see it without a link..

melsy · 24/03/2004 10:33

I used to work for them many years ago. I also got taken there many times as a child. The last time I went was 11 years ago with my late wonderful Grandfather. Whos anniversary of passing is tommorow & it has a special meaning to me.

I was just starting to feel more confident in myself. Now I think I will go and hide !!!, its a bit overwhelming with EVERYONE disagreeing. They were just thoughts & I am glad that every one puts there opinion accross. I agree that it all gets too much on other sites , but it could be controlled on here and kept very sympathetic to the simplicity of mumsnet. I dont wnat to spoil mumsnet at all. I like the profile page idea.

I will ow quietly slip away from underneath u all & go and feel sorry for myself in a corner.

OP posts:
CountessDracula · 24/03/2004 10:35

melsy I think the profile page idea is a good one, not that I would use it probably as I would rather send a photo to someone than have it available for all and sundry to see. Think it would have to only be available for members.

Mothernature that is a great idea too. I would love that.

GillW · 24/03/2004 10:43

No don't change it. I love the way these boards work without any of the silly distractions. And being able to see what's going on in every subject heading all in one view rather than having to dive in and out of lots of sub headings. And being able to see a little preview of the discussion in the latest postings view. And being able to see a whole thread in one view, rather than having to load a new screen for every message.

Having the best boards (and the best posters of course - though that's probably no coincidence) is why I'm addicted to this site in preference to any other.

In fact I'm like the way that this site works so much, that I'm having real trouble at work - where one of my tasks at the moment is to implement an internal discussion board for one of our clients - in finding one which I think works as well as this for userfriendliness and getting to the point of the discussion without having to see a lot of irrelevancies too. Haven't found one yet which lives up to this!

justiner · 24/03/2004 10:47

Hi All,
We are very much hoping Tech is going to take a "holiday" from his proper job and devote himself entirely to our needs very soon, so keep the ideas coming and where there's a consensus for something we'll definitely take a look at it. We already have a few projects up our sleeve for him that will make the site more functional/ useful.
Seems there isn't a consensus for too many bells and whistles and we tend to agree (not just for laziness's sake, honest!) that they get in the way a bit but the profile page is an interesting idea. Wouldn't want to crowd the site with too many pics - seem to remember it slows things down... and we wouldn't want that. How about an introduce yourself topic section on talk? That was mulled over a while back and would be v easy to do... do you think that would be useful/ help the lurkers cross the threshold, as it were?

Skara · 24/03/2004 10:53

Sorry Melsy but I have to agree with everyone and say that I love MN just as it is. I don't read or contribute to any other boards because all that swizzly stuff puts me off. I love the fact that everyone here is just a name; I don't want to know anything else about them! I don't get much time to post here especially at the moment (too busy being pregnant and buying and selling houses) but I love the fact that there is no hierarchy here, no cliqueishness, everyone is friendly and open and I'm sure it's because MN is so straightforward and simple

Sonnet · 24/03/2004 10:54

I too love the simplicity of this site - it is why I return time and time again.
TBH I do not get on with the mumsonline format at all and hence do not visit/post.

bundle · 24/03/2004 10:58

want to keep it simple too, my head can just about cope with mumsnet style

Mummysurfer · 24/03/2004 11:03

I'm with Sonnett - can't be doing with the format of MoL. Like the simplicity here, espec the way you can scroll up and down the entire thread without loading another page.

i like the idea of photos/pictures but uderstand the speed issue.
could we post pics for a limited time, even 24 hours

at the mome nt i would like it if the link on the homepage was working so i could enter the dvd competition - anyone else having this problem?

lou33 · 24/03/2004 11:04

When is the film review section being set up?

melsy · 24/03/2004 11:04

Oh well looks as if my big mouth fell in before my brain did!!! So no need to aplogise Skara. If anything this has reinforce what we like here & come out with another new idea of profile page, but done in the special mumsnetter way could be good. I agree it must only be for members, does that mean subscribers only?? Im actually quite interested in who people are , as I have made some good new friends in person from here.

I post on here all the time because it is easy and there isnt loads to wade through. lets pretend someone else started this thread shall we. Am I allowed to change my mind???
Dont shout at me for being fickle .

hi melsy

carla · 24/03/2004 11:08

OOOOOH! I love the idea of Tech devoting himself entirely to our needs .......
