FWR split continued

We have decided to start a new thread about this as the other thread was near capacity and taking a while to load.

Here is Justine's post from earlier on

We can give a Radical Feminism topic a go if that's what people want and see if it works. Obviously we need to be crystal clear that no one is obliged to post in one particular place and no one should feel excluded from any topic but we could test it out, and see if it helps resolve tensions. We'll do that in the next few days.

There are a couple of other things to think about as well.

First, those who come onto FWR to derail and inflame. We acknowledge that we have been too slow in the past to spot these posters for what they were. We're sorry about that and hope we're a lot quicker at dealing with them now. We're all for opinions but we do draw the line at posters whose only obvious intent is to goad.

And secondly, this idea that FWR can be an unwelcoming place to those who aren't following the 'party line'. Judging by posts on recent threads and by our inbox this is a view of a significant number of Mumsnetters and obviously that's not a healthy situation. Mumsnet is a place for discussion and for diverse opinion and it's the exchange of ideas and tolerance of differing opinions that makes it the board it is.

We do hope threads like this help to clear the air a bit and remind everyone that, whatever the differences of opinion, the FWR board will only ever be the stimulating, thought-provoking, enriching place we'd all like it to be if people feel that they can express themselves without being jumped on.

Please do continue to let us know your thoughts.

It might have gone better if they had been.

glasgowwean · 01/07/2012 19:14

And not to be pedantic but I think the pesky Vikings claim those isles belong to them. But they don't have tablet so it matters not a jot

Didireallydoit · 01/07/2012 19:14

I had a friend who was stationed in outer hebredes for a long time, you dont want to know what he could do with a roll of 2 pence pieces

Did it involve his bits ? Seen it done front and back. Dirty sailor bastards

Didireallydoit · 01/07/2012 19:19

Hester, I really dont know who posts what there, I dont look at posters, only posts, thats the case for most of the things I read on mumsnet, but I genuinely dont post,on topics that really interest me, because I have read too many bloodbaths of people who have said the wrong things.

Something that's come out of this for me is that basically EVERYONE'S feeling victimised from the Radical Feminists to the Sex Positive and everything in between.

This has led me to believe that actually posters aren't these scary people who are going to get all their mates to shout at me and tell me I'm a traitor to women and if they do, it doesn't matter.

So I feel much happier posting now.

The problem with that though, is feminism is suppose to be something women should aspire to, so there is a certain degree of expectation, rightly or wrongly, of posters there.

If you put yourself forward as "leaders" in any area, then people are going to look to you to set an example.

I genuinely find that more time is spent degenerating other women there, than productively discussing issues, although as I have said a few times, I don't go there any longer and apart from one recent foray, haven't for a long time.

I thought the treatment of the transgender poster was absolutely appalling, and I also dislike the dismissal of posters who bring "the wrong" issues/view points onto the board.

It is not for one group of posters to tell another what they can discuss, thats for HQ, but it happens, with a distinct lack of empathy, all the time in FWR.

glasgowwean · 01/07/2012 19:32

Hot, I think it's gone too far sadly. This debate has been raging on for some time and it's had a really negative impact on both the section and other MNetters. You can't say anything on the general boards without being rounded on as one of those militant feminists. We've brought it upon ourselves and something needs to change

Beachcomber · 01/07/2012 19:34

That's nice YRC that you feel happier posting.

I'm perfectly aware that I have been basically been told to Fuck Off.

yellowraincoat · 01/07/2012 19:35

By who?

Didireallydoit · 01/07/2012 19:35

Im on all three threads, and I cant see anyone saying anything of the sort to you Beachcomber?

Beachcomber - I sincerely don't think you should fuck off.

Beachcomber · 01/07/2012 19:37

By all those who have vocally complained about the presence of radical feminists on MN and those who played a part in the creation of the Holding Pen For Unpopular Views AKA the newly created Radical Feminism section, that radical feminist posters clearly stated they thought was a troll magnet.

glasgowwean · 01/07/2012 19:39

Hot, I get that, I really do and I think that posters have been making an effort but there is still old baggage being brought into threads and I don't know how we get beyond that

ChickensHaveNoLips · 01/07/2012 19:39

Beachcomber, I've always really enjoyed your posts in FWR. And I remember you because you took the time to explain some things to me when I just didn't 'get' it.

Hullygully · 01/07/2012 19:41

The soi-disant holding pen was created for those wanting FWR to be contrary in spirit to the general ethos of MN

Be careful what you (one) wish(es) for

glasgowwean · 01/07/2012 19:41

Was the consensus from most that the section wasn't wanted but it was created anyway as a trial ? I didn't see wide spread support for it from most posters

yellowraincoat · 01/07/2012 19:42

Have people vocally complained about the presence of Radical Feminism?

I didn't see that.

I did see a lot of people pissed off that their views were dismissed as pro-porn or anti-feminist or whatever.

Hullygully · 01/07/2012 19:42

No one wanted it created.

Mn were just trialling in a desperate oh-god-were-just-so-fucking-sick-of-it moment I'd guess.

yellowraincoat · 01/07/2012 19:42

Argh, bowing out before this becomes another row.

Beachcomber · 01/07/2012 19:43

Thanks Himalaya.

I think I've had enough of the attacks. Don't need it.

It is the feeding frenzy that has put me off though really.

I'm actually not terribly surprised that Radical views aren't welcome on here - I'm amazed we weren't told to Fuck Off before TBH.
