The first objection I'm afraid I can't really buy - Most of the UK population uses Facebook. Most Mumsnetters use facebook. It's a bit mad to object to facebook on principle - it's like objecting to people.

This is just daft and is irrelevant whether you buy it or not. Just because "most of ths population" use FB doesn't mean everyone on MN is going to like it. It is like saying you don't buy that some people won't eat meat as the majority of the population are not vegetarian/vegan. And it is nothing like objecting to people Hmm

The second objection I just think is misguided, as I've explained. Users' privacy is no more compromised by this button than it ever was.

It might not be "no more compromised" than before but the point is it is much more visable now and before people might not have been aware of the link button but now they are and they don't like it.

So should we change something because some people on this thread dislike it even if we think they are mistaken to dislike it? Even though what they are objecting to is already in place?

You may think we are mistaken not to like it but we are part of MN and without posters you just have a website with adverts no one sees. And the fact that it is already in place is not the issue. Before lots of posters weren't aware of it so couldn't object.

I've been doing this long enough to know that new things are never well-received - but it doesn't always mean they are bad.

That comes across as patronising and lots of posters are telling you this is a "bad" idea and lots of people don't like it.

For me this is a huge loss as I feel unable to discuss something I would have appreciated help with and that makes me feel sad. And namechanging doesn't work for me as someone always guesses who I am and outs me.

I love chrome. its sooo much better than IE.

IAmNotSoPissedOffAnyMore · 20/12/2011 16:50

I am going to have to investigate it a bit though.

I can't see any menu, or address bar, or favourites or anything. I'm sure they are there somewhere Confused.

And I've only been here 3 minutes and already it tells me it has blocked three requests from Facebook Shock.

What the fuck? Does Facebook rule the world? It's worse than Stalinist Russia for information gathering.

BobbinRobin · 20/12/2011 16:52

Chrome is great. Internet Explorer is the devil's spawn. FB does rule the world...

LissTheSeasonLouBeJollie · 20/12/2011 16:52

the star in the address bar is bookmark. thats what I use. but yes, FB rules the world. fair play to zuckerburg. he may be a nasty little toad, but he's v clever. have you seen the social network?

GeriManda · 20/12/2011 16:54

Thank you for the Chrome link Was looking and couldn't find one. It's gone, the Like button has gone Grin. Very satisfying.

MmeLindor. · 20/12/2011 16:54

Lissie
That second one you posted. Office admin and she couldn't spell bored...

LissTheSeasonLouBeJollie · 20/12/2011 16:57

mme, I know. it irritates me. my db's gf writes in txtspk all the time, and Im never sure if its because she cant be arsed to add an extra letter, or she just cant spell.

IAmNotSoPissedOffAnyMore · 20/12/2011 16:58

The ads are all gone now [tee-hee]

The only problem I now have is that it is remembering and filling in my mumsnet name at login - how do I stop it doing that [complete technophobe emoticon] Blush.

I feel an evening's research coming on.

BobbinRobin · 20/12/2011 17:01

Lilystar - thanks, I have installed FB Disconnect, and also this one Google's Keep My Opt Outs

The Like button has gone on the thread title - yay! But the big blue F button is still up there at the top of the page (the one beside the Twitter and Search box). I suppose that's a different kind.

BobbinRobin · 20/12/2011 17:02

Oh yes and Adblocker is great - go for it people!

IAmNotSoPissedOffAnyMore · 20/12/2011 17:03

I think that one only leads to the Mumsnet Facebook page - maybe? So doesn't actually link anything anywhere.

LissTheSeasonLouBeJollie · 20/12/2011 17:04

no, the blue one on the drop down shares this thread on FB.

you can get rid of that in "customise"

IAmNotSoPissedOffAnyMore · 20/12/2011 17:08

I think Bobbin is talking about the one on the very top right - there is a F, a t, a YouTube, a printer and search box.

I always thought those linked to the mumsnet Facebook and Twitter pages, rather than to the user's pages Confused.

The drop-down one is different again - I have hidden the dangly thingy [technical term].

Thanks for your help by the way Lissie and everyone else (and for not shouting at me). I do realise you all think I'm a wuss but I really don't want some of my family seeing me on here. They wouldn't go out of their way to trace what I'm saying (and I log out anyway), but this linking to Facebook stuff really bothers me (not Facebook in general, I know that happens, but linking to the Facebook of someone I know).

BobbinRobin · 20/12/2011 17:12

"I always thought those linked to the mumsnet Facebook and Twitter pages, rather than to the user's pages ."

Well that illustrates the point I've made a few times! That is the button that people keep saying that has 'always' been there so what's the big deal. But it's SO not obvious what it does. I always thought it was to 'Like Mumsnet' - but I'm not about to click on it to find out!

BobbinRobin · 20/12/2011 17:18

Isn't the drop down one the same as what's at the top of the page - the only difference is it 'hangs around' when you scroll down?

IAmNotSoPissedOffAnyMore · 20/12/2011 17:20

Bobbin, I think the button everyone is saying has always been there is actually the one on the dangly thing (the viewport bar apparently) that you can hide in "customise".

So there used to be two different Facebook buttons, one was a link to the mumsnet Facebook page (and that is still there in the top right hand corner) and the other was a "like" or "share" button on the viewport bar.

A lot of us hid the viewport bar the minute we were allowed to do so, and so for a lot of us there wasn't a Facebook "like" or "share" button on our pages before Thursday.

That is why it was a shock to some of us, but others are saying "but it was always there".

It wasn't always there - for me Hmm.

IAmNotSoPissedOffAnyMore · 20/12/2011 17:22

I don't know.

Help, Lissie or someone else with Facebook. What happens when you press the button at the top right? The one beside the twitter/youtube/mail/print buttons?

Does it take you to your home page (with a link) or to the Mumsnet Facebook page?

LissTheSeasonLouBeJollie · 20/12/2011 17:31

the one that is immobile and at the top right is a link to mn's FB page. the one on the drop down is to share this thread on your fb and the one that came up the other day is to like the page on your FB wall. its no problem, it is confusing unless you use it regularly.

I do understand why some people got upset, but honestly, your privacy is no more compromised than it was before. I certainly discuss mn threads on FB (not in a nasty way I must add) and for me, the link between the two have always been there. dh has also found rants Ive had about him in tne past, which has made me more circumspect about what I post (and I have a "shy" name for when I want to talk about anal thrush and cystitis) once mnhq sort out those glitches such as the two-step post and get rid off the button on sensitive boards, this'll be forgotten about.

BobbinRobin · 20/12/2011 17:48

Thanks Lissie - but I'm still Xmas Confused about what the difference between these two is?

"the one on the drop down is to share this thread on your fb and the one that came up the other day is to like the page on your FB wall"

In both cases this specific thread will be flagged up on my FB, is that right?

lilystar · 20/12/2011 17:49

Iam if you click on the spanner icon in the top right of the Chrome window, it opens the menu, then go to 'Options', then 'Personal Stuff' and you can ask it to remember, or not remember passwords. You can also delete ones it has already saved.

One extra swishy feature is that you can set up a Chrome account, so you have to sign in when you open it. That means that no one else who uses your computer, who doesn't have your password can see your browsing history, bookmarks etc. May be worth investigating for anyone who is sharing a computer.

To the poster using Safari, sorry I don't have any handy hints for that, other than you can still install Firefox or Chrome, and they are both faster and more secure than Safari.

LissTheSeasonLouBeJollie · 20/12/2011 17:51

bobbin, thats right. AFAIK theres no real difference between the two. I know that by sharing you can comment. so you could share this thread on the drop down and comment "that lissie's really pissing me off" whereas im pretty sure you cant do that by liking.

lilystar · 20/12/2011 17:51

Bobbin - yes, both will link the thread to your wall/newsfeed. The old button on the Viewport bar is the 'Share' button, however Facebook are phasing that out and it is being replaced with the 'Like' button (everywhere, not just on MN). The big, static FB button at the top of the page just takes you to the MN Facebook page, like the Twitter one or the YouTube one does.

JKSLtd · 20/12/2011 17:55

lily it's me on Safari.

Do I want to change? really? I dunno if I can face it. Recently I've had to have a new hard drive installed and lost stuff - still haven't got a functioning iPhoto, grr.
Am also facing the reality of changing my iPhone (as my 3 is dying).
And experimenting with Timeline on FB.
Don't know if I can take anymore change

BobbinRobin · 20/12/2011 17:55

Thanks Lissie and Lilystar. That IS confusing, they look exactly the same...

BobbinRobin · 20/12/2011 17:56

I mean the one on the drop down and the one at the top of the page look exactly the same, but do two completely different things.
