The first objection I'm afraid I can't really buy - Most of the UK population uses Facebook. Most Mumsnetters use facebook. It's a bit mad to object to facebook on principle - it's like objecting to people.

This is just daft and is irrelevant whether you buy it or not. Just because "most of ths population" use FB doesn't mean everyone on MN is going to like it. It is like saying you don't buy that some people won't eat meat as the majority of the population are not vegetarian/vegan. And it is nothing like objecting to people Hmm

The second objection I just think is misguided, as I've explained. Users' privacy is no more compromised by this button than it ever was.

It might not be "no more compromised" than before but the point is it is much more visable now and before people might not have been aware of the link button but now they are and they don't like it.

So should we change something because some people on this thread dislike it even if we think they are mistaken to dislike it? Even though what they are objecting to is already in place?

You may think we are mistaken not to like it but we are part of MN and without posters you just have a website with adverts no one sees. And the fact that it is already in place is not the issue. Before lots of posters weren't aware of it so couldn't object.

I've been doing this long enough to know that new things are never well-received - but it doesn't always mean they are bad.

That comes across as patronising and lots of posters are telling you this is a "bad" idea and lots of people don't like it.

For me this is a huge loss as I feel unable to discuss something I would have appreciated help with and that makes me feel sad. And namechanging doesn't work for me as someone always guesses who I am and outs me.

This is excellent!

I installed adbloker plus for Google Chrome, and it is really nice not to have to look at any ads!!!

GetOrf, perhaps that is what MNHQ have done wrong. In the past they have pandered to complaints and with huge effort (because customising these things is expensive and requires a lot of labour and effort) they have allowed for customisation for those who didn't like change.

Now it is expected that every change they make should be fully customisable for each mumsnetter. It's just not feasible or possible that a website should operate in that way. I think MNHQ have already bent over backwards trying to please everyone but as with the old maxim - you cannot please all of the people all of the time.

Bobbin - no it doesn't and I'm not going into the reasons why again, but it really really doesn't.

If people do not know how facebook works or accidently log into other peoples facebook accounts or click on things by accident, then that is not the fault of MNHQ and at some point or other, people will have to just learn to be a little bit more internet savvy. MNHQ are doing them no favours by pandering to them. If you are old enough to use the internet then you should be old enough to figure out how it all works.

BobbinRobin · 20/12/2011 15:57

Wasn't that survey about an 'internal' (not FB) Like button for individual posts?

LissTheSeasonLouBeJollie · 20/12/2011 15:58

Xpost. I think that its actually less likely to be clicked by accident than the drop down box thing. It doesn't move and its always visible. That's a big plus.

QuintessentiallyShallow · 20/12/2011 15:58

They dont have to customize for everybody, just take that darn "Like" button away from certain topics, where sensitive threads are posted!

FrothingBeserker · 20/12/2011 16:00

x-posts, Liss.

I think that the hoops I have to now jump through to use MN mean it isn't necesarily worht my browsing time. only time will tell, obviously.

but I don't want ot use a different browser - if I wanted to use firefox I would already be doing so.

I don't want ot delete cookies after every internet use. I have not had the need to in 10 years of having home computers/sharing computers with children.

I do realise this is my problem, not MNHQ's, and I don't expect them to do anything radical about it.

but for everyone to keep saying there is no issue when there clearly is (the two-click process doesn't work; the confirmation window does not always pop up; it may post to the wall of the next person to log into FB; MNTech has said they ahve no control over how FB use their end of the FB button, and cannot tinker with it too much - doens't inpsire huge confidence, really)

MNHQ must be really naive if they thought this would have no impact.

LissTheSeasonLouBeJollie · 20/12/2011 16:02

Bobbin, there was a q about this too. I remember answering hell no to like posts and meh, don't care to external likes.

And the bridge has been there for as long as mners have been fbing too. I joined fb through mn. And threads have been linked on there since forever. Now the link is visible. That's all that's changed.

QuintessentiallyShallow · 20/12/2011 16:03

It is true about the hoops.
Remember to be logged off facebook.
Remember to clear cookies.
Try to look for topics without the "like" button before posting an OP.
Name change even more frequently.

It is a shame, it should not be necessary.

baubleybobbityhat · 20/12/2011 16:03

I didn't participate in that thread Mumsnet did about the "like" button as I assumed it was them bowing to pressure from lots and lots of posters who had asked for the facility to like a post on the thread itself (as you can do on fb), rather than surveying our attitudes to linking entire threads to fb.

I must read that thread actually, if I can find it. As I understand it we have had a "link to facebook button" on every individual post for more than a year. So am interested in why and exactly how mnhq made these new changes.

BobbinRobin · 20/12/2011 16:04

"Bobbin - no it doesn't and I'm not going into the reasons why again, but it really really doesn't."

Assuming you mean it doesn't really form a bridge between your MN identity and your RL one, yes it really really does, or certainly has the potential to.

redlac · 20/12/2011 16:05

IAFPO re your mouse clicking on links when you hover over them

start menu > control panel > printers and other hardware > mouse > hardware > properties > advanced settings > and deselecting "Fast Initialization

Hope this helps

MmeLindor. · 20/12/2011 16:13

Replying to something that Aitch said earlier, about noticing if someone has linked to this thread (or another one for that matter)

Do you have to press the for it to show up or could you link by C&P (ie. oldstyle) and it would show up as a link?

JKSLtd · 20/12/2011 16:18

GetOrf - where is 'Tools'? I use Safari, can I still use your instructions?

IAmFuckingPissedOff · 20/12/2011 16:19

Lissie, I'm in no danger of clicking the drop down box thingy, because mine is hidden Grin.

I had forgotten it was there at all (which is why I was so Confused when everyone kept saying "it's always been there").

I'm off to investigate adblocker - I'll have a look at hovering while I'm at it (not hoovering by the way, that would be too much to ask for Grin).

LissTheSeasonLouBeJollie · 20/12/2011 16:21

IAm, Xmas Grin

I do have to say though, totally off topic, but I seem to have spent all day on this thread, I got a card today from my grouchy and tightfisted boss, with twenty quid in. result!

that is all.

lilystar · 20/12/2011 16:25

If you are using the Chrome browser, take a look at the Disconnect extension here which will stop your cookies being tracked across sites. There's also Facebook Disconnect here and I would always advise to have adblock installed. One or the other of these means that I don't see the button in question at all.

As far as I am concerned, it is my responsibility to make sure I can't click it by accident. IAFPO you may find if you install Chrome on your netbook that it runs a little faster when browsing.

MmeLindor if you C&P the address of the thread old-style, it will show as a link in your FB feed, but won't show anywhere on here.

BobbinRobin · 20/12/2011 16:28

Lissie - what you have just typed about your boss is a good example of why you shouldn't go accidentally hitting the Like button if your boss is on your FB Xmas Grin

(I'm sure for many reasons my paranoia isn't justified in this case, but it might well for similar situations with other posters)

LissTheSeasonLouBeJollie · 20/12/2011 16:31

ah, but A) I never click like, and B) I would never add my boss anyway. read it and weep with laughter

MmeLindor. · 20/12/2011 16:33

Thanks, Lilystar. Just tested that.

BobbinRobin · 20/12/2011 16:35

Lissie - yikes Xmas Shock Xmas Grin

LissTheSeasonLouBeJollie · 20/12/2011 16:38

I know! Xmas Shock

LissTheSeasonLouBeJollie · 20/12/2011 16:41

and here

the internet is never private! Xmas Grin

LissTheSeasonLouBeJollie · 20/12/2011 16:42

LissTheSeasonLouBeJollie · 20/12/2011 16:43
IAmNotSoPissedOffAnyMore · 20/12/2011 16:46

Ok, I've just name-changed.

I have discovered Google Chrome.

With ad-blocker (I think), and disconnect and facebook disconnect.

I can't see it any more Shock.

I CAN'T SEE THE LIKE BUTTON ANY MORE Grin.

I would still like a few questions answered, and I'm still very disappointed by Mumsnet's attitude to concerns raised, but at least I can't see the fucking thing.
